The Hydra that I ordered from that VR sale arrived a couple of days ago. I've been too busy to use it
How easy is it to get it running ? The OP says you have to email Razer for the Portal 2 support DLC. For other games (mostly HL2), is there a site where people put up mods/unofficial support and instructions?
Nah not really. For HL2 you download the Half-Life VR mod, and the Sixense Motioncreator software, and a profile for the latter, and bob is more or less your aunt hopefully. It took me ages to figure out but I'll write some 'structions out if you have trouble
I am consistently mortified about talk of teledildonics but I. can't. look. away! You've bumped it up a crotch, TSR
fixed.
Anyhow, what does everyone think is the likelihood that they'll be able to improve the screen resolution AND keep the consumer version under $300, as they say?
I'll be getting one anyhow, but I am somewhat in doubt of their ability to fulfill both these goals at once.
It's not that unrealistic. The screen is the most expensive component. Think of it this way - would a 7" phone with no touch screen, CPU, ram, or any other components besides a gyroscope really be over $300?

The way they've been talking about waiting for lots of apps and games to be ready for launch and low pricing makes me think that they are concentrating more on getting this adopted by the mass market first and foremost. I think selling this to the entire nation at $299.99 a pop would yield better results for their company than trying to nickle and dime a few hardcore enthusiasts.

It actually would make a lot of sense for them to price it higher at first, if the supply of consumer units is as anywhere near as constricted as the dev unit is now.
I hope they don't, because $300 is the maximum I'm willing to pay, but I'm absolutely certain that even at $400 they wouldn't be able to produce them fast enough for the people who are willing to pay that.

Well keep in mind, they're producing units right now specifically to ship. So it's basically going from the production plant directly into a box to be shipped to developer. I'd assume that they'd manufacturer some units for the consumer model in advanced for a few months, instead of per order. That should help with the supply.

Yeah, I'll be surprised if the consumer 1080p Rift is more than $300. I'll also be surprised if it's less than $300, of course.
I'm worried how much extra I have to pay for being from Europe, I'm pretty sick of paying a shitload more because companies just convert Dollars to Pound/Euro with 1:1 ratio, not like anyone got a calculator lying around right?
If they do the same bullshit math that the new next gen consoles do, a 300 dollar Oculus Rift could cost me 471 dollars before VAT and seriously, fuck that.

You mean going from, say, $399 to 399 GBP or 399 Euros? Yeah, when I see stuff like that my heart goes out to those in Europe. Decades of being screwed over by the gaming industry. I dunno if Oculus does that, though, since they don't list international amounts on their dekit order forum, it just takes you to amazon to complete the order. I think they do a proper currency conversion instead of just swapping the dollar sign with a euro sign or the GBP sign.
I'm fairly sure Omni does proper currency conversion, because they've been open about international shipping and trying to keep costs reasonable for people outside of the US. Do you have to donate, for example, 399 euros to make a 399 USD donation, or the actual amount of euros that 399 USD would convert to? I would expect the latter.
I wonder if many people don't realize how vast the differences in currency conversion can be. I buy tons of stuff from europe, so I've gotten pretty good at eyeballing the currency conversion (I usually just double the amount if it's GBP, or multiply by about 1.5 if it's going to euros. Both of those eyeball tests are actually more than the normal currency conversion, so if I can manage at those amounts, my actual bill will be cheaper.
EDIT: Just took a look on the oculus website - it lists the price at 300 USD, and when you go to pay, it sends you an invoice via paypal for 300 USD. If you've ever done currency conversion with paypal, it is accurate and not 1:1. So sounds like you'd actually be ok.

To be honest, even if it ended up costing me 500$+, I'd still consider it buying one, because I'm very interested in the Rift and the promise of Virtual Reality, but the next gen consoles can fuck right off with that.
Edit: I really hope they can give us a timeframe for the availability of the 1080p HD Rift soon, it doesnt need to be an exact date, but I wouldnt mind having a better idea of how long it will be before its released.

Nope, the new word is "we're not ready to talk about consumer versions and we're waiting for an attractive catalog of games that support the rift is available before launch"
so, realistically, it's sounding more like 2015-2016.

it's a user-generated tracker for the rift, so people can see where their orders are in the queue. It looks like, according to that, the largest number is 439,000 . I'm thinking that can't possibly be right, but the next most-realistic number is only 57,000... which also can't be right, because they said they've recently (as in the last few weeks) begun to pick up in the orders. So I'm guessing, just a patchwork guess, that it's somewhere in the 60,000-70,000 range.
EDIT: Ah, actually, I just realized this doesn't list rift orders automatically - mine isn't listed, for example. I have to submit it (which I just did). So perhaps some of the new orders haven't been listed. I also notice that, when checking your order status on Oculus' dev board, it goes up to 6 digits - so up to 100,000. So maybe they are in that range already.
It's been 49 days since I order my rift. It feels like so much longer.
EDIT AGAIN: Neat! That site has an estimate depending on how many they ship out a week. Assuming they're still doing 1500 a week, mine should arrive in 25 days.

That the release is so far away is saddening to me as a consumer, but from a business sense, it's the smart move. It would be entirely too easy to launch this thing too soon and have the company go under because of a lack of something to actually play on it; waiting a bit and getting developers supporting it is really the smart move.
Still, really really really hope it's out before the end of next year because demand for it erupts wildly thanks to the PS4 allowing for easy use of it somehow.
I showed the Rift to my old college roommate this weekend. He was blown away by it and first thing he said after trying it out was that it would be perfect for Porn. Looks like my buddy's dreams are about to come true.
Virtual reality invention Oculus Rift sought $250,000 on Kickstarter roughly a year ago - a target it trampled as it pelted towards the £2.5 million it eventually raised.
People began to believe, their number growing as Oculus Rift appeared at game shows - like Rezzed this weekend in Birmingham - and as dev kits shipped around the world. Game support sprouted left, right and centre.
Curio became conviction that this could be the future of gaming.
Now Oculus, the company behind Rift, has raised a whopping $16 million in private funding to help bring the headset to market.
"As I mentioned before, the funding opens up all sorts of doors for Oculus. It helps us hire the best and brightest minds in VR from around the world. It lets us experiment and prototype with more cutting-edge tech. And it allows us to build a badass, consumer VR gaming platform, the likes of which the world has never seen," founder Palmer Luckey wrote on Kickstarter.
"Virtual reality will be one of the most significant technologies of the 21st century. It has the potential to drastically alter the way we play, communicate, and learn. I think that VR can (and will) be as widely used as Facebook or Twitter, and the societal implications will be far greater!"
Unfortunately, however, there's still no public release date.
Cha-chinggg.
This is obviously great news for them, although the greedy consumer-whore in me just worries this'll make them even more willing to take their time and Valve this thing until it's really, truly, completely, ready hey guys come back we're still gonna sell them please totally we're just refining it until it's absolutely totally perfect because we just know you won't buy it until we're happy with it andJUST SELL ME THE HEADSET PLEASE.
Don't worry that's not really how it works with PE... FYI $16M for this kind of project is double platinum good... Spark must have been impressed with the resumes and tech on offer. Good sign they pulled that much dough, but looking at Spark Capitals list of transactions, nothing seems particularly amazing (this is v important for PE companies as the difference between the good, not-so-good and garbage firms is MASSIVE).
They've got a 5 year horizon to develop and market this product and then another 3-5 year exit period for the PE firm.
As such, their timetable is going to be two years max to get a consumer version ready and off the ground (likely less if their R&D is going well); that's what the cash is for, to ramp everything up and try and get some traction. Keep in mind next gen consoles are right around the corner and the PE firm won't want to miss an opportunity to capitalise on a new install base if possible.
I also saw that Pachter wrote this whole idea off; GREAT NEWS considering he is the Dick Morris of tech prognostication (ie the opposite of whatever he says is going to occur)...
Yeah, my hope is that they can take that money and just go guns blazing on this, get things out much quicker and better than they were planning. My unfounded worry is that they'll use the cash to wait until the absolute last minute to get things out, so they can fine-tune things as much as possible when really we all just want our future cyberpunk goggles now and don't care if they're a little uncomfy in the 50th hour of straight use.
To be fair, if it's likely to be 2015/16 I'll just pick up a "dev kit" (or early adopter kit as they in fact largely appear to be) when they start releasing the 1080p model.

yeah, that's probably what I'd do if it'll be that long. I am an impatient man.
Just read the article on Wicked Paradise and have to admit that the guy makes several good arguments in favor of the genre - most specifically that we have all these games focusing on headshots and none that are at all risque or romantic in a truly adult way. The most grown up game I've played recently was To the Moon - it had intelligent dialogue and great characters. It would be nice, even if the elevator pitch sounds quite juvenile, for games to actually reach out to audiences that aren't looking for competitive or twitch gameplay.
There are a ton of people who create life stories within the Sims - and the first thing just about all of them do is try to make two characters "Woo hoo" (the game's term, not mine). No matter what the flavor of the day author is or what topic is hot - zombies, vampires, etc. - throughout time romance novels remain a huge money maker. If someone can capture that audience, or make a great drama where you are standing in the room with the cast, it could be incredible. Not saying this guy's game will be anything more than smut, but I do admittedly like the directions he discusses going.
Could you imagine the screamer you could make? Like midway through the act, the girl looks up and her face deforms into something from the Grudge or the Exorcist. You could really, really mess with people.

I had wondered when something like this would pop up - a pair of cameras that you could "inhabit" with the oculus rift. This could be a revolution in long-distance relationships. Imagine being able to take over the eyes of a remote robot and physically being with someone hundreds of miles away. It'd be awkward at first, sure, but considering that online dating has been a thing for decades now, I don't doubt there is a market dying for this.
