Yeah the whole stereoscopic part of the rift isn't at all the main draw, I've played a few third party games that just play in regular old 2D and I haven't really noticed that much. It's more the all encompassing field of view and head tracking that makes the experience.
And you absolutely will be able to as well. From the official page:
The Witness will be released on the PC and the PlayStation4 simultaneously; the game will come to iOS shortly after that, and other platforms a bit later
That reminds me of Elemental Master on the Sega genesis so much. A top down, third-person, 2D, bullet-hell shmup should be everything that VR is not about. And yet... it works so well.
"Some games fit very well and some you may have a very different type of game play experiences, but usually the experience overall of just exploring a battlefield world with a VR device is actually really quite compelling."

holy shit, as a fan of shmups, that looks amazing. I wish it had a less moe kawaii desu setting though, but I guess onlookers don't even have to see it.
The #1 is simply an enhancement from stuff like Apple TV.
Whoa. No it's not.

The time list was also top gadgets of 2013, not most innovative or revolutionary, though the innovation thing clearly weighted them towards things like the xbox one, chromecast, and oculus rift.
The iPad and iPhone are on the list because they are sales juggernauts.

I found the medical name for why you don't get blurred vision when moving your eyes around in real life but you do in the Rift
It seems like the Rift might inhibit that in some way, or at least the eyes don't recognise the Rift closely enough to register the need for the reflex.
Valve updated the Source 2013 SDK with some VR stuff yesterday
The Upcoming beta in the Base apps for Source SDK 2013 have been updated with the latest code from TF2 and HL2:
Adds support for Visual Studio 2012 and 2013
VR Mode:
Switches from headtrack.dll to sourcevr.dll
Improved readability of the UI in VR
Removed the IPD calibration tool. TF2 will now obey the Oculus configuration file. Use the Oculus calibration tool in your SDK or install and run "OpenVR" under Tools in Steam to calibrate your IPD.
Added dropdown to enable VR mode in the Video options. Removed the -vr command line option.
Added the ability to switch in and out of VR mode without quitting the game
By default VR mode will run full screen. To switch back to a borderless window set the vr_force_windowed convar.
Added support for VR mode on Linux
Many assorted bug fixes and other changes from Team Fortress in various shared files
The Github repository for Source SDK 2013 now has the matching code changes.
This beta breaks mod compatibility for VR mode because of the extent of the changes. If you support VR in your app you will need to update to the latest source.

it's probably more of a function of refresh rate and frame rate, that or software motion blur.
This afternoon I played through Blue Marble set to For River from To The Moon.
Near-religious experience, honestly...
I let everybody who tries blue marble select their own song, and it's usually the first VR application I let them try, period.
One of my friends did it to the Bulk and Skull theme song, from the old Mighty Morphin Power Rangers show and it ruined the experience and I was so goddamn mad because that was literally their introduction to virtual reality.

yeah I don't let people do it to their own choice of song. The best type of music for that experience is either majestic or soothing instrumental music.

Brian Fargo of Wasteland 2: "I witnessed the future of the next generation of oculus rift yesterday and it is powerful. I am a believer... I can't give much detail right now, but it hasn't been revealed to the public."
these don't distort the image, rather they diffuse the light passing through. The result is an image that is still clear and "sharp" (relative to the rift screen, of course) without the screen door effect. The main drawback seems to be that it darkens the image a bit, though. Demonstration:
I would love to use an oculus to look around my jet while i'm flying in BF4. Please tell me you guys have an answer.
VorpX has BF4 beta support. So there ya go.
EDIT: It's not terrific, though. A much, much, MUCH better option is to play War Thunder, which has native OR support and is honestly mind blowing to play. I love to go into test flights and just... go for a ride. That and iRacing are my two favorite sims, especially with a good flight stick and racing wheel.

The feedback from that device blew my mind. The sensation of contact, inertia, and "hey idiot, you've put your hand through the geometry" was really effective. Far more effective than it had any right to be. They work with the STEM and the Hydra for tracking, could be worth keeping an eye on if you're already investing in those platforms.
So it is a shame that their KS is beyond doomed, but the rep I spoke to said they're going to press forward and work with what backers they had to turn out a smaller run of dev kits.

Supposed to, but it sounds like they're still working on quite a bit that still wasnt in the prototypes. (6 axis tracking and Adjustable focus and IPD, for starters)
I do live in an obscure european country though and I'm really interested in VR, those two dont mix well.
Are you secretly me?
EDIT: Adjustable focus means people with different degrees of shortsightedness will get to use it without special lenses? And what's IPD (I assume not integrated project delivery?)
Yes, that was my understanding. It was also the focus of my question, so unless he misunderstood me, still yes.
IPD = inter pupil distance. I'm not certain he meant this was getting a manual adjustment knob of some kind, but he mentioned it in the same breath with focus adjustments when listing things he wanted to improve on.

Hehe yea, in a few years you'll need to be an actual athlete to compete in video game tournaments.
I think it's to turn the video from an "everyone point and laugh at that white guy trying to dance" into a "look at our device doing something neat"

Rift is going to completely change how people play games. It's going to completely change how games are designed. It's revolutionary.

and so what, you cut it out and stick it in front of the screen behind the lens assembly, or on the lenses themselves?
that walking control looks slick. The game... not so much.
Of particular note: He walks backwards a lot in the video.
These, however, surprised the shit out of me:
