No I am not joking. Really!

You may think you are being trolled at first. However, wait until you have accumulated 150 candies. Do not eat them yet! Do not throw them on the ground!
This is a game to be experienced, a silly game of discovery. It is probably more fun if you don't spoil yourself. However, here are some good things to know:
Contrary to what you might think, it may be beneficial to touch another man's hat, and possibly his lollipop.
At one point, you are given 5 berserk potions. You only get 5 and can never obtain more. Use them carefully.
There is a forge. There are three possible choices for forging, though you may see less choices initially. You can only do this once, unless you want to start the game over again. You may want to wait until you have several options before choosing. And choose wisely!
There is a wishing well. Do not use it! You can only use it once.

Today I started again and have been min/maxing everything. I still can't beat the castle, even with walkthroughs and guides.

And why can I not stop playing it?

I'm just repeating the forest hoping I get chests, then trying to get a better lollipop farm going.
And I don't even know why.
I've thrown 200 candies on the ground. I got a crying face, and that's all it seems to do. I haven't eaten any.

This is a good plan, really.
Once you have the best weapon money can buy, be sure to upgrade it further -
For the map after the GOB one, you will want the most upgraded weapon plus a good 3-4 health potions, and you should be set. (they heal 50)
Also eating candy is actually a good thing, just not right at the beginning.
Also, eating candy adds to health but apparently only very miniscule amounts.

I'm terrible at riddles, I can't even figure out question 4. It seems obvious
You start getting so many lolipops a minute that you can just constantly plant them; but I went to the Witches hut, so I understand why now.

You get 1 health for every 10 you eat roughly.
I think it's closer to 1 per 40, it's not a very good rate. But it's something!
It also improves recovery time because that's based on percentage of HP that needs to be regained.

No, that's the limit, until you find an item.
edit: ha! There is!
Even when you have the item, it'll still say 100lp/s but really it'll be 300.

The chest in the forest can give you a different item from the chest in the mountains. But not every area has chests, those are the main two.
EDIT: also, if I have the first four item slots filled (going down) is there anything else for me to find, item wise, in the first three quests?
I get destroyed in the castle gates; but the candies I win from the Underwater area don't make up for the cost of the potions to get through.

You remind me how much I want another game like that.
You have to have the sword fully upgraded to forge it at the anvil, and you have to have forged it at the anvil for the witch to upgrade it further.
It's the same sword, she just keeps making it better.
I think that's all you get from the first 3 quests.
For the castle gates,
Ah, I see. Thanks.
I got the
EDIT: Uh, I can't upgrade my sword via the sorceress at all, even the first one; but I did all three candy-type upgrades.

Oh my god guys, the cauldron. Oh my god.
I just have the Chocolate Sword; I can't seem to get any other sword. The witch won't let me do the upgrade (60klps) at all, and...?
I guess I could use the Forge maybe? But Sporkys warning in the OP makes me not want to do that.

I need that for the 300lp/sec item

Fire Sword - requires having a fire scroll (keep buying from the merchant, they're random). Your sword does more damage.
Summoning Sword - requires having a summon imp scroll (keep buying from the merchant, they're random). You summon a monster after killing an enemy.
They can all be useful, but you can only pick one. There's some sort of internet consensus that the life sword is not as good as the others, but I did well with it my first time. Being closer to full health at the end of a quest means you get to do more quests more often. But the other two are great as well. Summon is fun but not very good against big bosses.
I did life for the same reason. I figured the fire sword would probably be better in the long run, but the life sword would allow me to get further, quicker.
Sorry, I edited it to be clearer.
edit:
Nevermind, acid rain scroll.
