    You know what game I want? "Tycoon Tycoon", where the player controls a shadowy organization that makes other people successful in a convoluted conspiracy to take over the world.

    I'm not a nice guy, I just play one in real life.

    I actually downloaded the cube game based on how bad they said it was on the last Checkpoint. It is mildly intriguing but nothing interesting really happens from one layer to the next, so there's no huge motivation to pour much time into it.

    What's the irony level on a game company that's blatantly ripping off another company's game suddenly being concerned with intellectual property rights when it's their game on the line?

    Yeah, isn't their game a blatant rip-off of this:

    It's my opinion that clones are allowed to exist as long as they haven't lifted the code or art assets. They definitely haven't used the art. I can't verify the code.

    There is certainly no shortage of similar games out there already: Theme Park and Roller Coaster Tycoon. SimCity and every other city building sim. Diablo and Torchlight. Every Gameloft game...etc

    It would be nice if this game did something different or better than GDS, but that's subjective either way.

    I figured you would have comments for the "French revolution simulator" for the Oculus rift!
    Experience what its like to have your head chopped off via guillotine. I mean who wouldn't want to experience getting their head chopped off?

    And where is the news about Divergence Online and the "Pursuit of gaming truth." (Too easy ?)

    And where is the news about Scarlet Blade. I am still trying to figure out what character Graham modeled for. Insight would be greatly appreciated!

    Cheers !

    There's making a game which operates on a similar premise and feels reminiscent, but also provides an alternate experience.

    Then there's reproducing every facet of a game's experience and barely changing anything at all.

    Sonic was an inventive new application of the platformer narrative Mario gave us.

    This game is a blatant rip off of Game Dev Story.

    What is this I don't even.

    @Darkewolfe

    Pepsi is a blatent rip off of Coke, does that mean we shouldn't have to pay for Pepsi since it was invented four years later?

    Calling any game with the same premise a clone is way to slippery of a slope and really is not relavent to the story unless there is some sort of proof that Pirates are targeting this game for that very reason. Otherwise it's just being used as a distraction from the actual story.

    Siddown on
  • enderandrewenderandrew Systems Engineer OmahaRegistered User regular
    @Siddown - Pepsi tastes nothing like Coke, so it isn't exactly a clone, even if it is in the family of colas. Please note the comment @Darkewolfe made about how Mario and Sonic are both platformers, but not clones.

    Game Dev Tycoon is a blatant clone of Game Dev Story.

  • roadtoadroadtoad Registered User regular
    Clearly Graham did not grow up playing Konami Track & Field in the arcades of the 80's. The original ones, with buttons you had to hit alternately to run (before they switched them to trackballs that you had to spin as fast as possible because people were beating the crap out of the button units).

  • DarkewolfeDarkewolfe Registered User regular
    And I wasn't saying that anything is a justification for piracy. I don't think anyone should buy OR play the new game. They should buy Game Dev Story.

    What is this I don't even.
  • SiddownSiddown Registered User regular
    @enderandrew

    I've played neither, but I don't think it's relavent either. Most of the piracy happened on the first day, before any of the pirates knew it was an "exact clone".

    @Darkewolfe

    But have you played this new game? As I said above, I haven't played either, so I can't comment but it seems that most of the people who are saying it's a clone haven't actually played both. I'm not willing to brand a game as a clone without playing it first.

    In the main thread in PAR there are a few people who talk about playing both and while they say there are similarities they don't go so far as to say they are clones (they also don't go out of their way to say they are all that different either).

  • DarkewolfeDarkewolfe Registered User regular
    Yes, I own the original. Yes, I've watched the new one played. Yes, it's a clone. Why are you knee jerk arguing if you have absolutely no knowledge of the situation?

    What is this I don't even.
  • ArbitraryDescriptorArbitraryDescriptor Registered User regular
    I've played Story. From browsing the wiki for Tycoon is sounds like the took the raw concept of Story and built on it. It reads more like a "Torchlight" than a "Diablow Too"

    http://gamedevtycoon.wikia.com/wiki/Game_Development

    Read that. It sounds like more than a simple reskin of Story. It sounds like a thematic-clone (ie: a new entry in the game development subgenre), sure, but not a clone in the sense of it being a reskinned version of an identical game.

  • enderandrewenderandrew Systems Engineer OmahaRegistered User regular
    @Siddown - I wasn't suggesting people did pirate, or should pirate because it is a clone. I'm just saying that we're praising these devs for a clever ruse, when normally we lambaste devs who clone/rip-off games, because they are then thieves themselves.

    That would be irony.

    I've played Story and Tycoon, and Tycoon is a hugely different game. It's similar in the way any two FPS games are the same. Actually, it's kinda like saying that Bioshock is just a reskin of... I don't know, like CoD or something, because both are first person perspective games where you have to use various weapons to kill people.

    So yeah, the two share a couple of similar concepts, but that's a given when you are talking about two games which cover the same material. And GHG even admits that they were inspired by GDS, which is why we see the same 'points float up from the computer' thing. Besides that though, you would be amazed at how different the two games actually are.

    In GDS you pick a topic and a genere, have one person write your story, another graphics, and another sound, and that's really all the control you have over your game besides which console it is released on (Oh, and the direction thing, which is a one time deal that you don't have any control in improving). In GDT you research a number of different techs, which you then have to implement through coding a new engine. These techs can then be added to your game, but if your game doesn't focus on the right areas (Of which there are nine, broken up into groupings of three), the techs may not be fully effective. All in all, GDT gives you a significant amount of control over how your game develops compared to the click and done method of GDS. If you think they're the same game, you've obviously not played both. That or you think any game in which you play from a first person perspective is just a reskin of Doom.

    P.S. GDT is a great game and well worth the $8 if you like simulation type games.

    Hardly "knee jerk", but @Karadan below completely contradicts what you are saying. I've yet to see anyone who has actually played both (no, "watching" doesn't count) say they are clones. Everyone says they are similarities, but that's a lot different than what you are implying.

    But regardless, I think it's completely irrelevant to this issue unless someone can show that pirates targeted this game based on how similar it is to Game Dev Story.

    Ok, I spent the morning playing the demos for Story and Tycoon. First off, I understand if anyone hasn't played both.They are, after all, on completely different platforms; and not everyone has a smartphone or tablet.

    That being said, I can confidently declare that anyone who claims Tycoon is a clone of Story has absolutely no idea what he (or she) is talking about. End of story.

    The best part, though? Tycoon is WAY more fun and gives a much deeper sense of control over the final product (and, subsequently, the review scores and sales) than Story.

    Kathleen's gleeful smile... it is exquisite...

    Kudos to that company, though, for giving the Internet at large a reason to bask in the hilarious irony for a time... and pretend to forget about the emulators on their machines for a day.

    Er, I mean, nobody uses those things, come on, now...

    For my part, I don't want to steal brand-new AAA titles, I just want to buy the ones I like at the cheapest possible price (thus, Steam), and/or play classic titles now that I no longer have a NES or SNES close at hand (thus, eShops and XBLAs and such, or for my brother who kept all our cartridges, a Retro Duo/Fiveo/Twelveo/Whatevero). Now if Nintendo will just finish porting all the old Wii VC titles to WiiU VC so I can play Castlevania again...
