The moral of the story is: always let games auto update themselves.

I've always been baffled by downloadable content that has to update itself as soon as you finish downloading it.

Why the hell don't they just update the content on their servers?
This was a patch to Oblivion, not a patch to the downloaded content. Downloaded content doesn't get patches-- but the game proper does.

Yeah, I know that, I was commenting more on the general practice of XBLA releases getting patched, but the patches never being added into the base content, you always end up having to download a patch right after downloading the game (if there is a patch), which seems odd to me.

I can't wait to get to the new areas.

Unfortunately, I told myself I'd finish the original main quest first, and it's taking a lot longer than I expected (fucking Oblivion gates).

it makes sense actually because to alter the game's code itself you'd probably have to send it to cert again

which is probably a more difficult process than getting MS to put a patch online for you

Alright, I'm admittedly late to the party. I'm just starting off with Oblivion because I just got it for my PS3. Long time listener, first time caller.

Anyways, someone please tell me what OOO is?

I suppose I don't need to worry about this expansion coming out for the PS3 because I have so much to play through.

For what it's worth, I tried this game on my laptop when it was released and it barely ran. I remember watching the intro movie and thinking how cool it looked, and the bitter sense of disappointment when I realized I couldn't really play it on my PC.

Fast forward to two nights ago. As I saw the game on my HDTV, I realized that this is how it was meant to be played. Well worth the wait.

OOO is almost a total conversion mod, but you won't have to worry about it given that you're not playing on a PC.

OOO is Oscuro's Oblivion Overhaul. It changes a lot of stuff around in order to make what some consider a better game.

It changes all sorts of aspects of the game from the autolevelling of enemies to how much fatigue a special attack uses up.

It's only available for the PC version as the PS3 and 360 versions cannot be modded.

Nope, I'm using my level 30 from Oblivion.

I'd be using my level 43, but he would rip through the content much too fast. I payed 30 bucks, I want to get my moneys worth out of it.

Which is even moronic for me to say, since I've payed 60 dollars for games with an 8 hour playtime. Oblivion has always been ridiculous in the price per hour ratio for me.

See, I'm of the opposite camp who's scared to do anything with a low level character, because quest rewards are tiered. And if you get an item at level 5 it's going to be crap compared to the same item at level 25+.

So I'd hate to get the Shivering Isles rewards, and then just have to scrap em later because they're not as good as daedric. I just turn the difficulty up to max to make up for it. Thankfully stuff seems to be hitting harder in the Isles than in Cyrodill.

I'd care if this was my twink character, but he's not. I might go through SI again with my main character just for fun, who knows.

I pussied out on the ayleid statue quest and just used an FAQ about 6 or 7 statues in.

Why do I not know of this quest?

Its kind of obscure. In the first dungeon you can enter in the game (the Ayleid ruin right when you get out of the sewer) theres a special statue you can sell.

It sets off an extremely elaborate, Indiana Jones-esque quest with an awesome ending.

Awesome ending you say? I think I'll have to get my non-OOO character to look into this. My Knight is just not powerful enough to be going into ruins.

Seconded. I haven't explored any random ruins yet, though I probably should.

One of the quests I really loved...

The Clue mission, where you have to kill off visitors to the mansion one by one. It was hilarious.

I also liked the assassination on the retiring guard as well.
I have a feeling you'll really like the first mission Sheogorath gives you then. It's essentially fixing up a dungeon to torture a party of adventurers. It's awesome.
Not to backseat-mod, but I really wish you would have spoilered that. Granted, it was an early spoiler, but I'm trying to go into this fresh. The fucking trailer was horrible about spoiling shit, too.

I don't think the PC version is out yet, so we're not 100% sure. But I would assume it's a .esm file, since it works almost identically to the other downloads on the 360, and essentially all it does to the main world is add an island with a big ass head on it.

I swear to god, as soon as I get home I'm going to search for a crossbow and nothing else so it's not brought up every 3 posts anymore. ;)

Well i saw the pc version in eb this morning when i picked up C&C3.

I'm curious if the crossbows mentioned in one of the interviews exist, and if so, a description would be great.

In a sense, yes. Since the interview mention was a typo and they don't exist in the game, then yeah. The ones in the interview do sorta exist. Because they don't. See?

I'm gonna have to try this OOO Lite, seems interesting.

That auto-levelling bull really turned me off Oblivion, especially with the way levelling works. My first characters just got progressively worse due to my poor choices in major/minor talents thingies. I would level up by basically having run on in the cities, and then got raped when I went through a gate.

Oblivion, she was a harsh mistress on noobs like me.

There is a mod that will level your items for you as you level up. It's quite handy and removes your self-imposed restriction.

I'm pretty sure the OOO will work with Shivering Isles but it won't affect the new content. Meaning that your OOO'd Oblivion will be the same and Shivering Isles won't have the different loot and creature lists. I downloaded Knights of the Nine and that worked fine with OOO. I imagine Shivering Isles will also gel in the same manner.
