Because I only have a DS, I decided to grab a copy of Wide World used (I couldn't find my original. It's most likely on another continent). There are a few things I forgot about the game that made me put it down in the first place. The big thing is now 2:58 in the morning. I got up about an hour ago. Everything is closed and it seems the game is really a "daytime" affair. I work during the day in a place that would likely reprimand me if I brought unauthorized tech in the building. (I work IT at a mutual fund company).

    Bummer.

I remember that being a thing in the GC version, too

I wonder if there will be more nighttime activities in New Leaf

I would assume they remedied that a little, UV. With the ability to set your town as a "night owl" town, they surely have stuff for you to do (if not everything) since that is your main hours of play.

I know I will probably be a night owl town.

So after some consideration... I've decided to make the QR Code submissions super easy but considering the audience at hand (lots of kids) I am going to have to moderate every submission since we're dealing with images here that can be... anything.

I don't want to risk any chance of someone uploading something disgusting, whether it be a QR Code itself, or a nasty image. I don't want to subject any children to that.

    I know right? lol.

I'm mostly concerned with people uploading images that do not contain any qr codes at all and instead are... well, you can only imagine. I can do a fair bit to ensure they are the proper formats/sizes for the images that the 3DS creates, but I can't ensure the content. I figure it's best this way, given the nature of youth that could be using the site and the type of people this game attracts.

The good thing is, I'll have a few moderators, and I can do so remotely as well with notifications being sent to my phone, so the wait won't be too long. On a good day, a few minutes at most.

That is of course, assuming that anyone uses the site. ;)

I don't think the site will be used if submissions don't immediately show up, i.e. if everything is pending moderation. People like being able to upload and immediately share. Of course you can moderate afterward.

It's still an option. I'm just extremely nervous about offering a service to children that someone can easily take advantage of. If someone posts 20 nasty ass pictures while I am asleep, that's 6 hours it could be on the front page. I don't like that idea.

I suppose I can take my chances at first.

Just have some sort of registration process and validate at that end. if you keep it to dedicated PAers I don't think it will be much of an issue. This is a pretty respectful community.

  • HallowedFaithHallowedFaith Call me Cloud. Registered User regular
It's not going to be a "PA" only site. There are registration options if you want to keep track of your 'gallery' - although that is very limited right now.

It's mainly just a sharing place, so I don't have much user interaction going on save for quickly uploading your codes.

So...um...haven't played an Animal Crossing game yet. What kind of multiplayer/social features does it have?

You can open up your town gate so others can join. Up to four people can be present in a town at once including yourself.

The Wii game had voice chat, but this one only has text chat...however among friends, you can text chat even when not in the same town. You can also send letters on different stationary with attached items.

Your town will start with only one kind of fruit. Other towns will have different fruits, so it's good to trade and plant others' fruit to grow new types in your town. Besides that you can trade anything else, furniture, clothing, whatever.

You can visit their shop to see what items they have to buy on that day, which will be different from the ones in your town.

If you play the Stalk Market (yes this is a thing) you can see how much turnips sell for in other towns and maximize your profits.

You can use items like Pitfalls as pranks so that your friends will fall in and have to get out. You can also potentially cause a lot of mayhem, chopping down trees etc....but friends don't do that!

In this game you can also upload your town in a dream state so that anyone can visit, but your town will not be affected by any trouble they cause when you are not playing, it's just for fun so they can see your stuff and check your shops.

You can just hang out, run around, fish together...there's also an island with minigames you can play like timed hedge mazes or Whack a Mole.

You can trade patterns (textures) you create to make all kinds of crazy clothing and furniture designs.

Basically, Animal Crossing revolves around items and trade and some light hanging out activities.

Thanks for this, seriously. I just got a 3DSXL and have been hearing tons about Animal Crossing, but having never actually played a game in the series, it's a bit hard to figure out what it actually is. The features people are getting excited about are, well, a little strange without context.

    "New fruit!"

    "Digital weeding!"

    "Fuck this bear guy!"

    Huh?

That said, the pieces are starting to look like a pretty cool game to me. I filled out the ITB on Club Nintendo, and I'll get my friend code on the Google doc as soon as I can figure out how that whole thing works.

It's a really hard game to describe, that's for sure. It fits more into the classic "sandbox" genre a la SimCity or The Sims than anything else, in that the game is wide open with no goals other than what you set out for yourself. Oh sure there are things you can aim for, like trying to complete the museum or fill out the catalog or collect all the golden tools, but it's still entirely self-driven. Basically you have a town, a house, a few residents, a museum, and a shop. The rest is up to you to do with as you please. Barren wasteland? Formal, ordered, walled garden? Haphazard design? Your call.

On that note, how happy am I that "stalking" with the net is a thing again? Fuck those tarantulas and scorpions. Still doesn't help for the speedier dragonflies, but it's a start.

Ok I think I've come up with a solution.

After X (I am thinking 3) code submissions that have been approved, your account will automatically be flagged to allow you to post without moderation queues.

    Yes/No?

So I only need to post three G-rated ones before I break out the genitalia? Good to know.

EDIT: Seriously, though, what about allowing the submitter to select a rating when they upload? Anyone who violates that gets booted.

Could you also have a report button that other users could hit and have it auto removed pending review after like three or five user reports? That way stuff could go up right away but if it is bad, users could report it. You could still moderate it as well, but this might take it down quicker if you are in between checking.

I agree with this method. Maybe put a warning up on the site about it. Let people know that 1) they can be voted off and 2) you might see bad things.

Bought my point cards for this. I swear Best Buy (in-store) was selling their 32gb sd cards for a ridiculous amount. Amazon it is.

Here is a sneak peak at what i'm doing. This is still a heavy WIP for the overall design, but the core system is mostly functional save for a few bugs. Things are ahead of schedule. ;)

    Why thank you. :)

I'm a lot further ahead of schedule than I thought I would be.. mostly because I've spent the last 48 hours working on this non-stop with very little sleep.
I sent off a preview to Nintendo and asked them to help supply me with some technical bits of information I require to make the launch smoother, hopefully they oblige my request.

I've also updated the main OP to include all of the Treehouse episodes in order, and will continue to update that as they come out. I think we are getting 10 total.

I can't say much because embargo, but get excited, you guys. A few things people in this thread have said, "I wish Animal Crossing had this..."?

    Yeah, this game has it.

Would you be able to give me some info on QR data?

I e-mailed Nintendo but have heard nothing back yet, however I need to know a few things about the file formats used when you save a QR code to the SD card.

    1) What is the default Width/Height. (I assume 400x240 based on my research)
    2) What is the default file extension.
    3) What file naming convention do they use. Ie: Date-Name.jpg, Name1.jpg, Name2.jpg

I understand if you can't release that, but having this information ahead of time will help tremendously in streamlining the sites functionality.
