    Are the Basics worth getting?

If you can get a good deal on an external drive and don't mind missing the charging cradle (which you can sometimes find on sale), and Nintendo Land, and the digital deluxe promotion... then, yes?

you'll want a usb hd anyway, so internal storage becomes moot. I'd say let Nintendoland make the call

Plus you can get a Lego City bundle for $290, which is pretty nice. Or, if you want, a deluxe with Lego city for $385.

Now, the question is to whether I can get $290 that I'm free to spend before the sale ends.

Benefits of the basic are: put that extra money toward a external drive.

Fingerprints won't drive you fucking insane.

That latter one is pretty damn big. I didn't think it would bother me so much on the deluxe. I wish they had done the gamepad in matte; or put something semi-rubberized where you hold it.

The Deluxe does come with Nintendoland though; so that's nice.

    THIS.

This is the entire reason I bought a basic and just bought everything else separate.

If you do go the target route, they have the charging cradle/stand on clearance for 7 dollars or so as well, if you want to get what would normally come in the Deluxe. Nintendoland can be had for under $20 pretty easily from Craigslist/Ebay/Amazon.

Fingerprints on my black Wii U gamepad aren't a problem because there never seems to be any on there.

Because I rarely hold the controller.
Cause there's no games, get it?

I will say that the story and dialogue elements added in Corruption were interesting.

It really sells an actual progression in the trilogy.

In Prime 1, Phazon is this horrifying new thing. You don't know what the hell it is, where the hell it came from, or what the hell the galaxy's going to do if the Space Pirates get their hands on it. So you investigate the long-dead Tallon IV, and kill the Metroid Prime.

In Prime 2, you have more aid. You make it to Aether just in time to save it from the thread of Phazon, and you know right off the bat how deadly this crap is. You have the aid of U-Mos giving you direction, and you feel like you have an ally, like you're making progress in your attempts to understand and eradicate the threat of Phazon.

In Prime 3, some amazing progress has been made. Samus has evidently gotten her info on Phazon out to the Federation as a whole. They know how to combat it, and how to use it in their war on Phaaze. Hell, you have a sympathetic commanding officer, and are assisted, at least in the first act, by a set of other bounty hunters. The final approach on Phaaze isn't (initially), an unknown suicide mission by Samus, you're backed up by the full weight of the Federation, and the awesome Dain.

It nicely speaks to Samus's intelligence. She runs into Phazon twice, and when it becomes clear to her that this stuff is spreading, she spreads the word to the Federation, and goes along with a coordinated plan to take out the major Leviathans once and for all.

I also like that the Federation in Corruption is competent. They see how dangerous Phazon is, and how much of an edge it gives your troops, so they invent devices to regulate it in armor giving all the boost with none of the risk.

PED troopers are able to pull their weight against elite pirate troopers and have a 0% rate of turning evil.

What I'm saying is, if Fleet Admiral Castor Dane had been in charge of the BSL station, the game would consist of visiting the station, getting a guided tour, and signing some paperwork giving them the rights to use Chozo power suit derived technology in any future military conflict.

    Maybe some high fives.

(Other M would just consist of Dane kicking Adam out an airlock and whistling.)

Honestly, I'm pretty sure people's opinions are more colored by other people's negative ones than by the actual game and story itself. Most of the complaints people have aren't even big issues or are explained in context. Even after hearing things I went into it with an open mind and only had a couple of annoyances. My buddy who doesn't hang out on forums at all had the same experience I did.

I think it gets ragged on because it has "Metroid" in the title and people expect things to be a certain way (and be done flawlessly). Other M was definitely an experiment and I'd say it was 90% successful.

Hmmm...wonder if I should just delete the channel and redownload it then. We tried twice last night and it wouldn't start. I hope it works this time, we're thinking about cutting the cable and using the Wii U/Netflix/Hulu as our primary source of viewing...

whenever netflix doesn't work, and that has happened to me, i have to power cycle (ugh i hate saying those words together) my router. Like, the wii/wiiu will be blocked from getting netflix even though other devices AND the web browser on the wiiu are working just fine. It works 95% of the time. One time i did have to delete netflix app and the saved data because something had gotten corrupted.

I usually just reboot the WiiU and it works the second time. Seems to happen if I don't like the Plaza load completely before clicking "Netflix". Happens at least once a week.

That may be it - I was in a bit of a rush to load it. I'll give that a shot tonight...I'll try rebooting the router too.

This happens to me. The pattern I've noticed is that it happens when I turn it on and immediately go to Netflix. It's as if I don't give the system time to get all its background workings finished. If I let the WiiU Menu sit there for a moment before loading I never have an issue.
Merely observations. Correlation or causation? I don't know

I never thought the off-tv thing would be its biggest selling point, but being able to watch Arrested Development and switch to Super Metroid if I feel like it while my wife watches her reality crap is just the best thing.

So what's up with EA? First they don't wanna play ball with Nintendo because they wont hop aboard the "single use*" install the disc train(also cause the WiiU isn't doing so hot anyway :P). People dont seem to like that, so now they are making games for WiiU?

They're still not going to do frostbite on WiiU though, right? My main concern is Dragon Age and Mass Effect.

They should start the direct off talking about all the ways the WiiU can watch TV then laugh about how stupid that is and then start showing awesome games.

Actually the entire Direct could just be a video of the new Xenoblade game and that'd be good enough for me.

Also, not that it matters, and it's completely anecdotal; the frequency at which I'm seeing posts all over gaming sites with the basic gist of "after the MS/Sony conferences I think I might just get a WiiU and stick to/build a PC this generation" is pretty nuts.

I just hope that Nintendo is fully aware of the position they're in right now; people are dying to hear about games after all the TV/social/crap. They need to not drop the ball.

And yeah, I know Sony/MS will be showing off games at E3 too (though...rumors I keep seeing are saying that Microsoft isn't going to be able to show off that many One exclusive titles yet, but who knows about how accurate that is).
