So, the "Nintendo e3 experience" at best buy consists of a whopping ONE demo station. And 200 or so people in line. At the rate they are going they will be lucky if 60 people get to play by the time 8pm rolls around.
I did get a free Wii U pin. And some Streetpasses. So not a total loss but I really feel for anyone that drive over 30 minutes for this.

Wow... wonder if it's like that everywhere or if your Best Buy just sucks :P

While that does suck on the other hand it shows people are interested and want to check it out.

Maaaaan I just got here and it's the same story as Mantis. Huge line with one demo station. They have a sign up list for seven-minute sessions, and the first slot open was for 5 hours from now. I'm not even expecting to get to play anything, I just hope I get some free stuff.

That's cool that you can sign up at least. If you can sign up and then not wait in line forever at least you could go do something else.

I really, really hope Smash is out before PAX East.
Otherwise, I'll to skip the Nintendo booth or risk being consumed by whatever amorphous blob masquerading as a line forms around the Smash demos.
I did not expect to watch the E3 direct and end up wanting a Wii U..

I can understand why some people harp about power so much (since it can affect more than just looks) but graphically what I am seeing in most 'Next Gen' titles looks like a bit of spit shine on more objects/enemies. Don't get me wrong I can totally see the difference in the spit but at this point it's like 'Meh' to me since it is already at a saturation point. Yes those systems have more power but the games shown in that ND all had me smiling and I'm excited to get most of them.
Also Miyamoto is such a dork ... an awesome, make you smile, and proud to be a geek/dork ... that man knows how to enjoy life.

Generally, I think the biggest advantage of more power is in what can be accomplished as far as draw distances. That was something I noticed when looking at all the PS4/Xbone games. Everything is rendered for days. No pop in to be seen. That's a big deal to me because rendering glitches and pop in just kills immersion for me. I'd almost prefer lower quality visuals than have high quality with pop in. Now, they may be running these demos on beastly PCs and the product you'll get won't accomplish that, but if it does, well that's a very fine thing indeed.
The other obvious thing here is that X looks to accomplish the exact same thing on Wii U, so maybe my point is moot.

Sure the One/4 can push better graphics than the Wii U, they also come with a cost. It'll be interesting to see what kind of profits(if any) some of these next-gen games make given the increasing cost of development and without the benefit of a large install base.
But it also doesn't seem to be as big of a leap in graphics as the previous consoles. Compare launch titles like Timesplitters for PS2 to Uncharted on PS3 to the stuff announced for PS4. Or PGR vs. PGR 3 vs. Forza 5 if you want a more similar genre comparison. Its a noticeable level of detail increase for sure, but I don't think it adds as much to the experience as the level of detail the PS3/360 added over their predecessors.

45 minutes in line and I've moved... about five feet.
Yeah I'm not playing any new Nintendo games tonight.
Well, they can never say this best buy thing didn't "work" I just saw a family buy a wii u after watching some gameplay and having 100 people in line tell them how awesome it is.

Having only one demo station certainly seems like poor planning. Did they just that badly underestimate the number of people that would show up?
Eh, if anything it works in their favor.
Like mantis just said; think about the effect of hearing about the E3 demo, going to best buy and seeing a zomgheug line and people talking about their excitement to play, and/or how cool it is.
Even if said person knows about the PS4/One stuff, those consoles aren't there, either in playable form or even buyable form. The WiiU is right there.
And that's a good thing.
Because that's how the Wii broke out. Friends/family coming over to your house "hey, what's that? That looks weird" "here, let me show you (my pokeymans)" Then off to the store.
I hope it works for Nintendo. If they could get a few months of good sales under their belt to try to dispell the failure and/or "selling less than Wii" grime, things could pick up and they could have a healthy-ish install base before the holidays right in time for them to drop the price before the release of the PS4/One (the former of which is bound to have fulfillment issues)

Well if that is what they were going for, that is why they have jobs in marketing and I don't.
The funny thing about this is that most of the people in line can see the demo and its leading to some interesting things.
Prime example: anytime someone picks the Zelda demo, the entire crowd boos them. It's by FAR the longest demo.

I would boo them too. Why do you need to see Wind Waker again? If you didn't play it already on Gamecube (or the GC disk on Wii at least) then you are a heathen :P HD-ness can be gleamed from videos :P
I will say this, I got out of line and just watched for a bit, and Donkey Kong looks really good in person.
Having just finished DKCR 3D, I must say DKCTF is the game I am most excited about. More than Mario, more than Zelda, more than any 3rd party title. I'm a little disappointed that Retro isn't fixing the Metroid franchise... but there's plenty of time for that later. Retro definitely has a knack for breathing new life into aging franchises.
From the GAF thread on the Best Buy demo stations, this cracked me up:
Someone asked if the WiiU was getting a price drop. I said it definitely will by the fall, and the Nintendo rep got mad at me. Anyone else with impressions?

Oh I am sure that both consoles are being sold for a loss with one or more of them being 'hosed'. Say what you will but the 'Loss Leader' strategy always seemed a bit dumb but at the same time brilliant. I would say minimum 2 years before either breaks even.
In other news ... Game of the show for me was X. Soooo purdy. I will play that so hard.
But seriously, third party developers that complained about system power just look stupid once you see that.
Not to pick on this too hard, because yeah its beautiful.
If the WiiU logo wasn't on this, you could have told me this was an xbox 360 or PS3 game and I would have believed you.
Wait what? Which PS360 titles look like that? The closest would probably be Just Cause or Assassins Creed but they don't have quite the same fidelity, and in the case of Assassins Creed they don't have the same scale of world. Even Skyrim looks scaled back compared to that. It's not necessarily on the level of the XbOne/PS4 but it's definitely beyond most games.

Wow, that GAFfer is kind of a dick.
Hopefully I'll get a shot at this on the second day.
So in total I waited roughly 2 hours and 45 minutes to play a 2 minute round of Mario Kart. I got a free Wii U pin, and a free Mario Kart checkered flag. I picked up 43 streetpasses and visited a few local animal crossing towns. Met a few cool people and generally had a good time.
I will say the games all look amazing. It's hard to get over how beautiful Mario Kart looks.
I am very happy to see that when the level shifts angles it still centers on your character in the normal orientation. That would have gotten really confusing it didn't. Looks awesome.

Heck, it was more impressive than FF15 to me.
We don't actually know the scale of the world. You can do gorgeous vistas like that without them being reachable (think Bulletstorm, GoW or TERA) or looking significantly worse up close. Skyrim looks worse (although obv PC modded looks incredible) in part because they're actually reachable/playable areas. Not sure if the ones in X are yet or how much they degrade up close.
Also the ground textures look pretty standard, and there's the usual Wii U aliasing. It's still early on so the textures will obviously improve (I'm sure there'll be nice tessellation when it's out) but it seems like the Wii U is still weak on AA. I'd say it's certainly equal or better than the best on PS3 but it's not quite visually mind blowing like Witcher 3 or Destiny. The flying around/mech play looked awesome though.
I think MK8 looks great because Nintendo has incredibly talented artists, not because the performance is that high. There are some teams who have all the power in the world, but still create ugly games because their designers have bad taste. Nintendo never really suffers from that.
