It certainly got mentioned as a possible name in the post conference Bombcast. The only consensus was that you couldn't just call it "The One" unless you also called the PS4 "The Four".

You know that Halo TV is gonna be Gold only. And I don't blame them. If I was running MS, I'd make it Gold Exclusive.

But what would Silver even be at this point? I mean, it seems just about every feature they are touting is something that needs to be paywalled for them. Even Netflix is Gold only.

I do wonder if prices are going to go up $10ish, or maybe $10 at retail, stay at $60 for digital. Controllers really concern me too - I could see with all these features having those get more and more expensive. I know I like to have a full set of 4 controllers in case the kid/niece/nephew/friends/etc want to play a round of Castle Crashers or Scott Pilgrim and if they're an extra $20 each or something, it would be a pretty big hike in overall console ownership.

Silver would just not be able to use online features, just as it did before. Which cuts about 90% of the reason to OWN the Xbone, but I'd be okay with just single player gaming.

I could see the Oculus Rift and the Kinect 2.0 being an amazing match for each other. Hopefully the new Kinect is easily hackable for PC use.

It's a shame MS isn't pimping the Rift as a future Xbone peripheral.

I don't see it. They've already earned enough ire, if anything. People looked at the potential projection features that were teased and universally said, "Interesting, but the point is...?"

If people are complaining that there's already too much of a departure from "it just plays games", you can absolutely be sure they shit over a VR device. People weren't kind to 3D on the PS3 either, and that came in a time where the PS3's library was finally becoming substantial. Which is not to say the Oculus Rift is good or bad, it just couldn't come at a worse time for the Xbox One--assuming we believe the narrative we're hearing here. It'd be another thing to slam as a distraction--not unlike the new focus on Kinect. And that's before going into the difficulty of implementation (OR is hardly perfect either, but it's on a platform where people are happy to wait indefinitely for problems to be fixed--PC--which is how TrackIR managed to get off the ground).

That may be overly pessimistic. I think it'd be very interesting potential also, but everyone seems frustrated at anything that's "potential" that's detracting from what they expected to be already implemented. It's a pretty hostile environment, and not without reason.

This will be the first E3 I am REALLY looking forward to. Microsoft has to unfuck itself, Sony has to live up to the hype, Nintendo has to pull a rabbit out of a hat...oh boy.

MS will go with TV, Sony will still not show the machine and... Nintendo...will...who knows.

Have Sony said that they're not showing the console itself? Huh, curious.

And Nintendo will be at E3, they're just not having a big keynote. Instead, they're gonna focus on, y'know, games. Numerous Nintendo Directs aimed directly at gamers, some presentations for the press, hands-on with products on the show floor.

No one seemed to care that the PS4 was not physically present at the announcement so...it should be okay? I'm surprised, but priorities are priorities. They'll promote a few new games, but presumably, expand upon the actually pretty shallow description of games we've gotten so far since the announcement (a safe, smart move). The question for me is "Will they return to the social experience they promoted?" I haven't heard anything about it, and it's hard not to say that Sony saw that "no one gave a shit" and got distracted/abandoned it/smothered it until they need something for the news cycle.

Still, that seems like a very safe option, if we're to be believe. If Nintendo were there more actively, I imagine they'd do the same?

I would assume they'll have something like Silver...but it does bring up an interesting point. If the system is already required to be online 1x daily at least, would it effect sales if they also required a Gold Membership? Additionally, will they have to put a hefty warning on the box that a broadband connection is required for the console?

Is there any logical reason why the 360 controllers couldn't be used on the xbone? I know they wouldn't have the snazzy extra rumble but the design is identical.

Similarly Sony may adopt a similar stance to this generation, you can plug in pretty much any wired USB controller to the PS3 and it'll probably do something! I wonder if they'll let you use existing six axis controllers.

Also to fit in with the new console name, Gold and Silver are being renamed numerically. You can go for a number one or a number two subscription.

Meh. No idea. You can do that now, but I don't think anyone considers that a replacement so much as "free Webcam/PSEye thing"....but yes, it's entirely possible to do that now. A modern device would do better.

I guess I'm more surprised that Sony's including a headset.

Wait, what? Xbox 360 controllers work on the PS3? (serious question)

I think some of the talk about the new controller was HD audio or something, so that means there is still a headset mic.

At the same time I assume the kinect 2.0 would do voice comms just as well since its supposed to be really good at filtering out everything but who is talking to it.

    Oh, I laughed.

Still, when I first heard "Xbox One", I liked it. It was bold. It represented the unity of the living room, the new beginning they want, etc. It's the same as it was with the Wii, where I liked the name in context with their entire manifesto. Unfortunately, because the rest of the conference was such a misfire, and what happens on the drawing board of ad men is far removed from the consumer, the name's not working. Ultimately, it is irrelevant, as it was with the Wii.

Funny nevertheless how Microsoft basically used everything Sony did wrong with the PS3 and something Nintendo did wrong with the Wii and thought that would make for a good XBO announcement.

As for paid accounts: I haven't paid for Gold, ever. I don't use it (even though sometimes it's attractive). But if you are to use it extensively, from online play to frequent shopping in the Marketplace, I don't think its unfair to charge. I rather commend Sony for not charging than I blame Microsoft for charging. But they still have their chance to screw up their revised payment scheme for the next generation. Here's to hoping!

No possessives? Is Microsoft really so diametrically opposed to the concept of consumer ownership that they needed to make the phrase "your console" explicitly forbidden?

I assume PS+ will be turned into the "hey you can play games online" stuff as Sony will want some of those sweet sweet XBLG dollars, and also can't be shoveling out free games until forever when a system (that I assume they'll be taking a bath on) just launches. I'd be really surprised if one or the other charges when the other doesn't this time around, as XBL won't be the hilariously superior compared to PSN when they launched (assuming Sony has fixed PSN's crappy friends stuff).

I don't see Silver being obliterated by a fee--it makes far more sense for it to be the default setting on a console that has an online requirement anyway--anymore than I see PS+ becoming free (and thus, the games included to sweeten the pot being gifts rather than free rentals). Sony had a really big social network aspect that...no one's interested in at the moment (or at least no one's talking about it). There's a lot of room for them to divide that up between PS+ and not, and they may default to one or the other. We might know if anyone talked about it at all.

I know I said earlier that the name won't ultimately matter, but to play devil's advocate, while people were laughing their asses off over the Wii, they stopped laughing when the damn thing lit the world on fire.

It will most likely simply be called the Xbox. But... if it really does shit the bed... yeah, it's never going to shake being called the Xbone.

I seriously wonder how MS is reacting to that nickname. Something like this doesn't come along very often. It works on so many levels.

    If so that's hilarious.

All over the place its being called that.

Hah. So even the freaking name has turned into a PR misfire.

On the flipside, the actual word Xbox is incredibly good for voice recognition software. Uncommon phonemes, hard X sounds, it's a short word and it doesn't sound like many others.

So going off that fact, the name of their console couldn't be similar to common voice commands, or actual ones. It couldn't be, for example, the Xbox Home or something. Because that's a menu option and everything is done with voice. They want it that way so your withered grandma with stage nine arthritis can still participate and send them money.

Can't be Xbox 3 either, cause that's too similar to 360, and would confuse the brand.

Also, when choosing a name, you kinda want it to either signify a progression of the product (eg, the PS3 is one better than the PS2) or embody the core concepts of the device. The Nintendo DS, for example, literally has dual screens.

So what would it have been? Xbox Something being the template?

You know, its a shitty name that is both bland and confusing with the Xbox 1. But what else could it have been that didn't sound worse? Xbox Trinity? Xbox Future?

My biggest question and concern was indie devs. It's not looking good at all. Cut and pasted some of the answers from another article here:

Clicky to see some choice tweets from developers.
Brian Provinciano, creator of Retro City Rampage:

"No self-publishing" doesn't just hinder developers. A lot of publishers must go to BIGGER publishers to be able to publish on Xbox.

Mike Bithell, creator of Thomas Was Alone:

not that I'll ever sell well enough to make a blip on MS's radar, but somewhere, the next Minecraft is being made, for another platform.

George Broussard, co-creator of Duke Nukem:

Microsoft you *must* prioritize a low friction indie self publishing path. Otherwise you hand Sony games, devs and $.

Robert Boyd, co-creator of Breath of Death VII, Cthulhu Saves the World, and Penny Arcade's On the Rain-Slick Precipice of Darkness 3:

Microsoft just handed the indie dev community to Sony, Nintendo, and Steam on a silver platter.

David Frampton, creator of The Blockheads:

There doesn't appear to be anything actually new here regarding Microsoft's attitude towards indies. The news is that nothing has changed.

    David Frampton again:

But the fact that Microsoft's attitude towards indies hasn't changed is definitely affecting this indie's attitude towards Microsoft.

    Phil Fish, co-creator of FEZ:

microsoft doesn't care about indie developer.

    Markus Persson, creator of Minecraft:

Also, I tried to get excited about the xbox one, but failed.

Tommy Refenes, co-creator of Super Meat Boy:

So as someone who doesn't play Forza or any EA Sports game and already has a computer hooked to my TV, what does Xbox One offer me?

Zach Gage, creator of SpellTower and co-creator of Ridiculous Fishing:

@BenKuchera that was the only thing i was hoping for :( things are not looking great for the XO

Revolution was a great codename but Wii is better as a final product title.

Mainly because, I guess, Revolution means a lot to different people. I mean, you don't want to be selling a product called Revolution in a country where an actual revolution is taking place, which would have happened.

Thinking of where actual revolutions (as called as such) happened after 2006--there wasn't very much overlap with Nintendo's key market zones. Or any at all.

More plausibly, Revolution may have been seen as too 'aggressive' or not in line with the broadly demographic, family friendly image that Nintendo made a point of fostering with the Wii.
