I loved "Eternal Darkness" for the Gamecube. It actually made me jump a couple times, and it was uber creepy.
To me, it was very repetitive.
Excessively so.
The following nested spoiler contains increasingly spoilerific information. First spoiler is less spoiler-y, more complain-y.
You go through about 9 generations, and that makes you go through the same maze/level at least three times, but each time the level gets larger. You go through the older parts, but you have to take a longer path to get to them.
And then when you beat it...
You have to play through the entire game 2 more times with minimal variations (you play as a disciple of one of the other gods) to see the ultimate ending, which...
...is simply created from a cut scene you've already had to watch three prior times.
That's why I just beat the game once and then watched the rest on Youtube. Youtube constantly saves me from having to replay games to see stuff that I missed.
Damn you whippersnappers.
Back in the day, we didn't have YouTube and I had to walk uphill through snow to play my GameCube.
That's pretty cool. One thing I like about the horror genre in general is that they usually have really interesting settings. I have a hard time finding games that satisfy my desire for these semi-realistic detailed settings outside of horror or WW2 games.
I live in Mt. Carmel, PA. Literally next door. I have yet to see any ghoulish monstrosities prowling what's left of the town, which isn't much these days. One who isn't used to the steam rising out of the dead forest while it rains could get freaked out though.
That was the inspiration for the movie version of Silent Hill. I don't think it actually had anything to do with the game version. The writer of the movie just had a big facination for Centralia.
So....di-.....did we tell him to get Silent Hill 2 yet?
In all seriousness, the nightmare hospital freaked the fuck out of me.
I hardly ever see this mentioned, so either people miss it, or they think nothing of it: walking along Nathan Ave. just before you're supposed to enter the hospital.
The road just ends. There's a dead body in the middle of the street, and if you walk back on the right side, mannequins come flying out of nowhere.

I actually thought that was kinda funny. If I remember right, the effect isn't "Oh crap!" so much as it is "Hey, what's...that? O_o" It just didn't fit the tone of the rest of the game to me.
That having been said, the first time a nurse came after me in the hospital brandishing a big pipe, I quit the game and haven't looked back. I'm such a wuss.
Fatal Frame 1 scared me waaaaay more than Silent Hill 2. SH2 was... unsettling... but FF1 had me looking over my shoulder and chatting to the screen in an attempt to jolly me out of feeling scared. Eventually I could only bring myself to play it in the middle of the day.
I felt like such a wuss.

FF has never scared me as it's just ghosts and ghosts don't scare me. Oh no, they fondled me to death!
Silent Hill 2 will forever remain in my heart as one of the most emotionally disturbing games I ever played. Especially if you get the depression ending called Water I believe.
Very close, it was called In Water. Gotta love that SH2.
Glad to see someone mention The White Chamber, I was actually playing that not five minutes ago and registered to come point out the PA nod, in case everyone else ha dmissed it.
And to all of those who were thinking of getting Siren: Don't. Goddamn that game was bad. The "puzzles" made no sense, the gameplay was riddeld with unnecessary menus, the voice acting was awful... The idea sounded great, but failed to see a decent execution.
I ordered SH 2 used off the intertubes, per my friends threatening to disown me if I didn't play it. I liked Eternal Darkness, not freak-out scary but more "ohhh awseome!" gore and scaryness.
Uh so I have been having problems sleeping recently, is it safe to say SH2 will only make this problem worse?
Oh man Fatal Frame was probably the most unsettling survival horror game I've played. Hard to play. Gah. I didn't finish it. Ought to.
Silent Hill 2 had better atmosphere / art design / etc etc but for the most part the scariness is just the threat of something freaky and dangerous lurking when the reality is usually either nothing, the same-old same-old monsters, a scare that can't actually damage you, or, yeah, ok maybe a few dangerous surprises. Still one of my fav. games though. And still scary, but the effect is diminished if you've played it through before or have been FAQing it. I really wish they had used more baddie models or something.
Haunting Ground and Siren were unique but kind of meh and frustrating after a while.
Short version: Good, not great. Physics is fun to mess with, combat and stealth are tricky but equally viable, story is threadbare at the moment, puzzles are so-so, atmosphere is spot on. Some good scares that often aren't like your typical SH jump moments, and some genuinely disturbing parts. Worth a look now if the demos really grab you, worth a look later (presumably once all the eps are out) for more discerning players.
Do you guys think they'll ever bring SNES Clocktower to the Wii VC?
It's a shame the game was never translated to English, since it was one of the scariest game I've played using only 2D sprites.

Nintendo's keeping regioning as it was back in the day when it was released, last I heard, so unless they change their minds on that the answer's no.
I finally got around to playing the White Chamber today. It was a fun little point and click advenutre, nothing too hard to figure out. There were moments where I wandered around, confused, but I was able to beat it in one sitting without getting frustrated or looking for help.
The overall story/horror wasn't too hot. But the creepy moments were incredibly creepy. The music/sound effects helped a lot. I had a good time playing it, and was suitably creeped out. I recommened anyone who didn't already, give it a try now.
I noticed in SH2, I was more afraid a what could happen to me. I would always imagine these horrific scenarios, and when a cut scene finally occoured, I found myself saying " Thank god, now I can finally realx somewhat"
And going off topic a bit, could someone tell me what that white annointing liquid is used for in SH2? Can't seem to find a use for it.....
I....I like Eternal Darkness, though it's not exactly terrifying in the way some games are. The sense of dread and impending doom and top-notch, though.
Call of Cthulhu: Dark Corners of the Earth is downright pants-wetting in certain segments. I can't remember how long you go without even getting a gun....three hours? However long it is, it's nerve-wracking.
So White Chamber is good, then? When you say the horror wasn't hot but it was incredibly creepy at points, what do you mean, Reynolds?

I just went through the game too, and I was never even remotely scared...in fact, I'm not even sure what anyone would be scared of. Are there two different versions of the game or something?

Hey, I was scared. At least in some scenes (

I would like to pause for a moment, to talk about my penis.
My penis is like a toddler. A toddler—who is a perfectly normal size for his age—on a long road trip to what he thinks is Disney World. My penis is excited because he hasn’t been to Disney World in a long, long time, but remembers a time when he used to go every day. So now the penis toddler is constantly fidgeting, whining “Are we there yet? Are we there yet? How about now? Now? How about... now?”
And Disney World is nowhere in sight.

I just picked up, and completed, my Resident Evil collection, for Gamecube. With RE2 and RE3, and Code Veronica. CV was hard to find. Finally got a used copy, in mint. Finding a new copy of CV for the Gamecube was something like 70 bucks.
So the RE marathon begins! Half-way through RE:0.
Also finally put in Eternal Darkness and fooled around in the past. Game still looks really nice, in progressive mode.
Edit: I worded this first sentence goofy, I meant to say that I have the complete RE collection, I've just yet to play them through to completion. I made it halfway through RE0 as well before stopping, I recall picking it up at GameStop a couple years back and when I asked for it the clerk was like, "you mean RE boring?" I've completed REmake, RE2, & RE4, I think I beat RE3 back on the PSX, but I don't quite recall. My imagination just takes off running when I play a scary game. I can't remember the last time I played a scary game at night, aside from RE4, which someone already mentioned as just a really good action game.
Obscure is a love/hate relationship, it has coop, but doesn't really let you take advantage of it, as monsters literally spawn from thin air.
Eternal Darkness I've owned for over a year, and never booted up. I got it because everyone on the forum kept giving it such good reviews, I figure one day I'll get around to it.
The 'Room' games were very creepy as well. Very fun puzzle, but they get a bit too obscure sometimes.
In the White Chamber, you'd just be wandering around, looking for a new item to click, when...
GIANT SPASMING EYE! "Jesus Christ...am I going to die here? Am I in Hell?"
Yes, at first I was like...coffin, whatever. I haven't even seen this White Chamber the game keeps talking about. Then I go into a room to get to the room past it, and...
Random gooey, bloody, twitching alien body! The fact that you couldn't click anything else but it was what got me. I was frantically trying to find some other option, until I grudginly clicked on the body. The scare wasn't that good from what action finally happens, but it was the sudden appearance and the fact that I was really nervous about clicking it...
Edit : Went to play the other White Chamber, which is really the White Room to me. Just as fun as the other ones, if a bit shorter, I think. I honed my skills enough on those other two that I only got stuck in one part this time. Those are always fun.

What? Oh Hell no. If you love yourself you have to play that game. It's one of the only games from the last ten years with good character, good plot, excellent voice acting, and an atmosphere that actually does what it sets out to do. Do you love yourself? Do you?

So what do you guys think of Necronesia? I'm all for 'horror' games on a Nintendo console, but I'm worried no one will make a decent effort.
Necronesia itself looks.. ok. Possibly a fun week-end rental, but I really wanna see something more SH-ish on the Wii.

Fun fact #2: I had to play in 20 minute increments. In the middle of the day.

They drain your life and there's no way to stop them. Get an imagination, STAT.
