I've only read a bit of the thread, but I didn't notice anyone mentioning System Shock 2. I just played it and completed it for the first time, and it was a grand experience. I didn't find it really scary, but it was very creepy and it had a great atmosphere. I know the OP wasn't looking for FPS's, but a few people recommended FEAR, so I figured I'd throw that out there. I'm not a big fan of FPSs in general myself, but System Shock 2 was just excellent.

Does anyone have any other free games we can get online, in this genre? Urge to play RE4 yet again rising. And I still have REmake to try to go through. Ugh.

Yep, y'all did and in the end I found it for cheap enough in Gamestation used (LewieP, I'll still wing it your way when done) btu I haven't had chance to play it yet. I'm currently playing through Heart of Darkness (PS1), the presentation of which is incredible, with higher res graphics it wouldn't look out of place on today's consoles.

So I shall be scared by Silent Hill 2 soon. Sadly a friend spoiled the ending (well, general 'idea') for me.

Yes, you do. I had a similar experience at the movies. I wanted to watch A Beautiful Mind, my friend wanted to watch something else, and then he's like, "I don't know why you want to watch A Beautiful Mind
he just goes crazy in the end anyway
" Out of spite alone I had to watch that movie.

What? Oh Hell no. If you love yourself you have to play that game. It's one of the only games from the last ten years with good character, good plot, excellent voice acting, and an atmosphere that actually does what it sets out to do. Do you love yourself? Do you?

I know, I know. The backlog is just massive, and I don't even have a next-gen system yet! That and things like my gf's brothers never played Perfect Dark, making me bust out the 64 again, and it'd be a waste to just take it out for ONE game.

I should probably clarify a little bit. I meant the 64 got more play than the intended "4 player Perfect Dark against 8 fist sims in slow motion," than we initially intended. I was saying that the waste was to put the 64 back after only one game, which didn't happen. The GC has it's dedicated TV and all, I've just no time to play it. I'll play it come this weekend with the gf and the lights out.

I finally played Eternal Darkness over the weekend. It's a fun game, I don't know how scary it is, as I didn't exactly play it in optimum conditions. Meaning that my girlfriend was in the room with me, I played it at dusk with all the blinds closed and all, but I didn't turn the sound up (I couldn't, she has housemates), and I was too lazy to adjust the brightness, so it was a lot brighter than intended. It's kind of an odd mix, if anything the atmosphere was done right, the game has some pretty slick tricks up it's sleeve, especially with the sanity meter. However, the monsters/combat system remove any sense of danger/fear that the atmosphere establishes. I'm about 4-5 chapters into it at the moment but I left the 'cube at my girlfriend's house.

I also installed Call of Cthulhu on Friday night, but didn't get any real chance to play it. That will change come tonight, and I will not pussy out and play with the lights on/high brightness/low sound.

I finally got to play Silent Hill 2 this weekend after having it sitting around for ages and... I hate you all for suggesting it.

    It scares me.

(By which I mean it was exactly what I asked for. Cheers guys!)

Not too far in it yet, but I'm loving it. Wasn't exactly sure what to do at first and just stumbled around, but getting more in to it now! Voice acting is awful but the graphics are actually pretty damn good and the atmosphere superb.

Good :) The atmosphere and story are just fantastic.
When you're done with the game (only when you're done, so not yet!), I'd recommend reading some of the documents people have written (mostly on GameFAQs), like the plot analysis of the game and characters/monsters.

Don't worry--they forgot to test the Xbox version as well. I hit a horrible bug that ruined my save really late in the game. Ungood. :| I still loved the hell out if it though, if only because it scared the living shit out of me.

I think it got a bit silly once you got your hands on weapons. Mind you, you could still die fairly easily (too easily, sometimes) but it removed a lot of the tension.

I modded the PC version so you could actually run at a decent clip, though. Some things were basically impossible to do with the default running speed.

Apparently changing resolutions also affected how fast you went. Weird.

Eternal Darkness is a lot of fun until you realize you're playing the same damn board for the third time and then you have the play the entire game 2 more times with zero map alterations to get the true ending.

    Seriously.

So you have to do each board nine times.

But the atmostphere and storyline are great, so they kind of make up for it, but still... nine times!

And that doesn't even count the end board which you have to do 9 times on each iteration.

    - - - -

Oh, and the true ending is just a rehash of a video clip you've already seen - it's not even new material, just new narration! Boo.

I'm not spoilering any of that - it doesn't actually spoil anything; it just explains my gripe with the game, which is worth at least one play.

*shrug* Then just play ED once through. It's not like the cutscenes/endings are all that different for subsequent playthroughs anyway.

For me, I was actually ok with going through areas again, because there would always be something different. Either your character would be better equipped for magic than combat, or you'd be more powerful because of different weapons and better spells. Plus, they tended to open up different paths. It didn't bother me much.

Cold Fear is a pretty decent RE4-style knock-off. Not terribly scary, but I had fun.

I'm mad that the US didn't get Siren 2. Apparently not only is it vastly superior to Siren 1, but also a great game all on its own.

Well, there are a few difference. The camera is farther away in Cold Fear. It also might have a FP mode, but I don't really recall.

The weapon setup is entirely different. Think more original RE style where you find weapons in different places (though there should be some duplicates such as shotguns, AK-47s, etc). In each area of the game you will also find an 'ammo' room which lets you fill your ammo up to the max. Of course, you can't always access them.

The aiming is a bit wonky though. If you shoot something it sometimes doesn't hit and whatnot. Also, the graphics, while decent, are nowhere near as good as RE4.

Probably not. One of the reasons it nearly gave me a heartattack was because it's was so unexpected; I think it's the only cheap scare in the game, though there's a constant atomsphere of doom and evil. I was waiting for that painting of the lady in near the secret study to start screaming at me, thankfully it never did.

And yes, Eternal Darkness is a fantastic game.
