Survival Horror / Horror / Frightening Game!

Ok, I've actually got a night to myself tonight it seems, no flat mate, no girlfriend round and no going out with friends. Console wise I have: PS2, X-Box, Gamecube, 360 and Wii.

I have the urge to play a frightening game tonight, so I'd like you to suggest your most terrifying game experience yet. I get paid on Friday so paying by cheque at the local Game store should net me any game for this evening.

I have (and haven't completed) RE:0, RE:Make, RE:4 but I'm not quite sure if I'm in the mood for a resident evil game. What other games (not necessarily survival horror but 'frightening') would you suggest? I'd prefer to steer clear of FPS (Not really my thing).

What's the newest Silent Hill like? Do I need to have played the first few (I don't feel I could go back to them now, immersion is killed by the dated graphics)? I've heard good things about Clocktower (I think), worth it? How about Fatal Frame?

Suggest games to scare the crap out me :D

Call of Cthulhu: Dark Corners of the Earth.
    Preferably the pc version.
It's first person, but there ain't much shooting.

And play all 4 Silent Hill games. Seriously. The fourth's generally fealt to be the weakest, but it's still worth a shot.

I also hear well of Fatal Frame, Siren, Clock Tower 3 and possibly Haunting Ground.

Most scared I've been by a game was actually Pathologic, but... it's not the most accessible of things. Worth it if you're prepared to put the time in.

You should check out some of these games if you are so daring.

Seriously though, seeing as you have Resident Evil 4 already I would go ahead with that.

The newest Silent Hill has its creepy moments, but overall, 2 and 3 are far, far scarier.

The first two Fatal Frame games are all kinds of unsettling. Not really frightening, but they can sure make you nervous.

Haunting Ground is also intense. Not really scary, but it has a way of getting your adrenaline up, when the main character's fear ratio goes to the max(the screen starts flickering between red and black, mad vibration, etc.).

The scariest game I've ever played is probably Silent Hill 1, but it probably wouldn't scare me much nowadays. 3 had the most intense moment in the whole series: the red hallway at the funhouse.

Another vote for Silent Hill 1-3 (4 was a waste of time IMO)

I would suggest 2, as 3 takes a while to kick in.

1 is very good, but not a lot of people like the way it controls, but if you can get over that, your in for a treat.

Oh and Fear for a FPS scare :)

Play all the Silent Hills, if you want to play just one, go with 2, you don't need to play 1 to "get it" and in my opinion it's the best one.

Condemned creeps me out, it's not a survival horror game, but it's very very tense. Fatal Frame/Project Zero games are scary, if you like movies like Ringu (The Ring), some very disturbing bits in those.

It's more shooters I'm not a fan of, I used to get really immersed in them but nowadays...I dunno... I've found myself not bothering. I did play Call of Cthulhu on the 360 at my friends and now you mention it I did really enjoy it. It was kind of slow paced and creepy.

As for the PC front, my pc is WAY underpowered and sat in the kitchen, as opposed to all my consoles which are in a comfy living room where I can plonk my arse on the sofa.

Up to now it's looking like Silent Hill I think. Could I jump straight in to 3 or are the stories continuous? I'm not -really- against playing the other two, it's just I don't get much time to play video games for any lengthy period (probably crank about 6 hours in tonight and then won't have chance for another 2 or 3 weeks) so rather than get involved in a series I'd just like to be able to pick up a single title.

Cheers for the suggestions up to now folks! And I'm reading through the least scary games, I own some of them!!

Don't play Silent Hill 3 without playing Silent Hill 1. There's a major plot twist halfway through that has a huge connection to the first.

2 stands alone perfectly, and it's just as scary as the third.

I would like to pause for a moment, to talk about my penis.
My penis is like a toddler. A toddler—who is a perfectly normal size for his age—on a long road trip to what he thinks is Disney World. My penis is excited because he hasn’t been to Disney World in a long, long time, but remembers a time when he used to go every day. So now the penis toddler is constantly fidgeting, whining “Are we there yet? Are we there yet? How about now? Now? How about... now?”
And Disney World is nowhere in sight.

I used to love Space Hulk (the original, not the 3D0 and then later PC-port version), I also loved it because it was gory.

Cheers for the suggestions guys and gals, I actually located Silent Hill 2 for £2.99 just now on my dinner break, so can't complain at that! I'll be cranking up the surround sound and turning down the lights this evening.

Reading up on Siren (which according to wikipedia is: Forbidden Siren in Europe and Australia) and it sounds quite entertaining. If I get any more time and am in a horror mood I may pick it up!

You absolutely must play this game if you want creeped-the-fuck out. The best part is that the developers were absolutely unaplogetic when they designed this game, and they took some flak for these decisions, but from a player standpoint I stand by all of the following:

    * No flashlight: a lot of this game is DARK. Some areas are totally pitch. Don't adjust your TV settings; turn off all the lights. If you have surround-sound, crank it. You're not supposed to be able to see in all of the dark corners. You probably don't really want to know what's in all of the dark corners. When your skin starts crawling because you're thinking you're seeing shit hiding in the shadows on screen--as well as in your TV/game room--you know the devs did their job right.

    * Weak character: your guy will get messed up. A lot. The sound of one of your bone's snapping will make your hair stand on end, and you'll be reminded of how fragile your character is and that you're up against horrificly overwhelming odds. Having to deal with bad wounds makes you feel more vulnerable and freaked out.

    * Low ammo: A large chunk of this game stays away from the gunplay, and that's a good thing. You're not supposed to be able to go up against these enemies. What you really have to do, and what you really want to do most of the time, is run and hide.

    * Slow pace: I thought this was the best part of the game. It's a slow burn and the tension just keeps building and building and building. By the time you're an hour or two into it, you slowly start to feel an ominous sense of dread with the whole thing.

It's not the best FPS adventure or horror game ever created and it does have some problems (be careful--there are a couple of bad save glitches), but damn, it is creepy as hell and it does a great job if you really want to be frightened by a game.

I hunted around Game and Gamestation and couldn't for the life of me see it (not in new, nor pre-owned). I happened to pass by a second hand shop (Bulmers if you live in York) on my way back to work. It normally just has guitar stuff in and a really SMALL selection of video games.

By pure and utter chance it was in there and cheap as chips. Oddly the rest of the games there were around the £10 mark. I put it down to pricing error or pure and utter luck!! It's in good condition too.

When I'm through with it I don't mind posting it on to someone, it's not one I'm bothered about collecting. But as I said, I can sometimes take ages to get through a game as I don't have much time to myself :D

Ammo is indeed plentiful in Call of Cthulhu; it's weapons you'll be short on, since you don't get one at all for the first few levels and whatever you do collect will be routinely lost.

Anyway, I also recommend it. It has more than a few frustrating spots, and the stealth sections are really shoddy - for instance
in the air-filled tunnels, the two guards just outside the prison always spotted me if I was crouching and in sneak mode, but saw and heard nothing if I were just crouching as I went by
    - but it can teach every other adventure game out there a thing or two about setting up atmosphere. Puzzles are reasonably logical, and should be second nature to anybody who's played a Quest game or two. The action isn't bad either, and for a game that doesn't put too much emphasis on shooting, the guns are quite satisfying to use.

Let's see... most everything else I can recommend has been said already. Fatal Frames 1 through 3 are worth a look if you can find them (had a hell of a time finding 3). The Silent Hills all have their respective charms, though I submit the first one had the best balance between fighting and exploring. Of the old-style Resident Evils, REmake and 2 are absolute musts, with 3, Code Veronica and Zero being more debatable in terms of quality (I liked them, many appear not to, though Zero is highly superfluous). 4, of course, is more straight-up action, but it's extremely well done straight-up action.

There's also a game called Obscure, which is basically like old-style Resident Evil meets The Faculty or something. Not exactly a stellar title by any means, but it has some legitimately creepy moments, and the fact that you can get characters killed and keep playing makes it better than you'd think. Cold Fear is also a capable RE4 knock-off; not nearly as polished, but with enough features of its own (environmental hazards, human enemies, strafing) to make it worth a look if you can find it cheap.

Lastly, Siren is a surprisingly good horror experience with a horrible narrative structure. It's a cast of about ten playable characters over set intervals, given objectives like 'defeat so-and-so' or 'escape from this place'. Problem is, it tends to loop and repeat certain characters until you do something different, and certain other intervals are impossible until a previous character helps out in some way. Case in point, in one scenario a man is trying to get down from a tower, but can't because of a patrolling zombie that whacks him as he drops down. The only way to do it is from a previous scenario, where you have the chance to lure the zombie to a well with a radio and then knock it in, permanently removing it.

Game's full of stuff like that. Annoying as hell. Still, it gets the atmosphere right, and the sight-jacking mechanic makes sneaking around more useful than it would be otherwise. As with Obscure and Cold Fear, it should be dirt cheap by now, but I never did finish it.

I would suggest Eternal Darkness just for the atmosphere, but with practically unlimited healing and plenty of weaponry available pretty much at all times it doesn't have quite the same degree of tension. Play it with the Sanity meter drained, though, and it'll mess with your head and creep you the hell out occasionally at the very least.

You have to run away from the Inn, and all the crazy townfolk. Took forever to realize I could bolt doors behind me. And then later on in the Warehouse, running from huge sludge monster. Christ. I was shaking when I finally ran the hell away from that thing. Being in a vent as it slowly warps and pounds around you? Terrifying.

And the whole begining scenes before the fighting, when you have free-roam around the town? Don't forget to peek into windows, especially cellars.

Seriously, SH2 is one of the prime examples of games as art. It's rare to find any art in any medium that explores the human condition so unapologetically. When you discover the secret behind the whole thing, it's a serious "Oh fuck!" moment. I really hadn't expected a twist like that.

Is SH3 as good? I hear it involves characters from the first game, and I liked that one a lot too. (Though I always wanted to know what happend to Lisa / Red Nurse)
