Actually... huh, now that I think about it, having some of their games be multi-console with Wii U-exclusive content for those games would probably be an incredible win for them. I would buy the FUCK out of Metroid on the 360.
Bethesda are fucking scumbags and you can trace it back years (wherein they do the same thing with Arkane but loan them some money and then threaten to take them to court if they don't sell the studio to them for next to nothing): http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showpost.php?p=60536433&postcount=71
That Prey article implies the game was far closer to finished than I ever imagined. Would love to see it peek its head again, if only to look at whatever it turned into.

People are going so far as to speculate "well, it's not REALLY a game console, I bet this is their way of getting out of the business". I just don't see how anything but "Here's our games. Bam." with a mic drop walkoff is even a starter. I mean any conference they have, regardless of intended topic, is going to be hours of "WHY DOESN'T IT HAVE AN OFF SWITCH?!!" and "I DON'T WANT YOU WATCHING ME IN THE SHOWER!!!", I'd cancel that shit too.
Except this is with the press... Who really haven't been saying too many negative things about it. It's not some forum.

But would you buy the fuck out of Wii U, when you no longer have exclusive Nintendo stuff on there? Cuz that's sort of the point....

Like I said, "some of their games" and "Wii U-exclusive content" for those titles. Not all of their IP. And if Nintendo starts sliding further and further away from profitability with the Wii U, I would hope they consider creating content for other home consoles and continuing to make handheld consoles. In theory I like their games (haven't played one since the Game Cube days), but I don't care a lick for their gimicky hardware (mainly the Wii, the U's tablet seems kinda cool).

So where do you draw the line with "some of their games"? The more exclusives they have on their console, the better chance to sell their console. What incentive does Nintendo have to go multi-platform? Why pay certification fees, extra dev costs (for porting), etc when they can just put stuff on their platforms and keep all the profits?

"Not all?" Seriously, I can't make that call. I'm taking a completely uneducated guess that Nintendo would profit greatly by publishing on other consoles while continuing their handheld juggernaut. Selling HD ports of their older titles would print all kinds of cash for them. Wind Waker HD isn't going to move a ton of Wii U's, whereas a NEW Zelda probably will. So, sell it (Wind Waker HD) on XBLA and PSN while offering Wii U-exclusive content for that version and keeping a new Zelda exclusive to the Wii U. I'm not saying they need to put out their flagship titles or their newest and greatest on other systems. But there is a HUGE untapped market for them to exploit. I think literally every person I know who games would buy an HD port of Metroid Prime Trilogy if it was on either PSN or XBLA. Do you know how many of those people would buy a Wii U to get that same game? Exactly zero. Anecdotal? You bet. Doesn't mean there aren't thousands of other people out there with the same mentality.
The day you see a Nintendo game on a non-Nintendo console will be the day they either go third party or go out of business. So not very likely to happen.

I'm talking about a (very unlikely) hypothetical, so yeah, I can say "some." What would sell more? An HD port of an older game on a console with an installed base of under 5 million worldwide, or that same game on that same system AND two other systems with an installed base of around 150 million? Again, those games are likely NOT going to move systems, it's the newer stuff that will. They certainly wouldn't lose any hardware sales with a strategy like this, but they absolutely WOULD gain customers that literally do not exist in their current model.

But how much of this ends up broadcast on TV or the radio or at the top of people's Google News listings?
Microsoft's blunder and subsequent PR shitshow was front page news on the BBC.
I can't account for American news but then again, who can?
Is there really much overlap between people who watch nightly news and people who are the target demographic for this console anyway? I highly doubt it.

I think that implies that MS could pull off some sort of Wii-like launch, where people of all types are lining up to buy despite disinterest from enthusiasts.
Except even the Wii had the interests of many enthusiasts at the beginning.
In any case, I don't see MS selling this thing without enthusiasts driving up demand. Despite their best efforts, I don't see being able to change channels on your TV while skyping your mom spurring on some perfect storm of general consumer interest, at least not without people like us explaining it to friends and family.
...which we might not do if we don't like it for other reasons.

But why stop with Nintendo in this scenario? If releasing on multiple systems would be so good for Nintendo, let's get everybody on board! Microsoft games on the Vita, Sony games on the WiiU, it's a multi-platform extravaganza!
If Nintendo released an HD port of an older game on a console that would be a hurt console sales. Sure, Wind Waker HD might not be a huge system mover (although we can't say until it's out and we see the sales data) but if they released it on say XBLA or PSN, now everyone who doesn't own a WiiU has hope that they'll do the same for other titles and have an excuse to not pick up a WiiU.
I do think there may be some benefit to Nintendo releasing certain things, like touch-friendly NES or SNES ports, or very simple games, on tablets and phones.

Hi, I'm a 30-something professional who has been gaming since consoles existed. I like sports, watch the news now and again, and have an entertainment center with AV equipment in it that all kind of looks pleasantly black and similar, and the ability to wave at my TV and have it do things sounds amazing.
There are a LOT of me out there. What did you think happened to everyone who had a NES, or an Atari, or otherwise literally grew up doing this? We stopped playing games? "Gaming" is way the hell more than 19-24 men who drink a lot of soda and eat junk food, for a very simple reason: We made this shit, we grew up with this shit as it was breaking out of the egg it came in, and we have a lot more money than they do.
This, by the way, is yet another reason why the shift away from "extreeeeeeme!!!!!!!111!" and shit like neon lights and LEDs on everything is great. We wouldn't buy that shit. I can buy a gaming console or a computer AND have it look respectable and adult on my shelf? Ooh, yes please.

But Nintendo doesn't, so that's the end of that.
You could make some argument that iPod/iPad/other smartphones are not direct competitors of Nintendo (not entirely true but they are not consoles/handhelds so kind of true). So I could maybe see them doing something small on a mobile platform. But it's probably unlikely. And they definitely won't be doing stuff for direct competitors like Sony and Microsoft.
But how much of this ends up broadcast on TV or the radio or at the top of people's Google News listings?

Well we are the primary market for MS. Not to say that as a pride thing, it's generally how any multi-national corporations operate, and MS has a provable history (what with 360 functions not working outside the USA). Granted they are apparently pumping some advertisement / awareness in the UK at least for the XB1 (I can't remember if I saw that here in this thread or somewhere else on the net).

Because I own a 360 and a PS3 and not a Wii(U). Because MS and Sony aren't hurting for hardware sales at the moment*. Because the Wii isn't HD, whereas the 360 and PS3 are and re-releases on those systems make sense. While the Wii U is HD, they have sold less than five million units worldwide. Contrast that with the combined install base of the 360 and PS3: who needs the software sales more? I'm not looking at it from a "greed" perspective, I'm looking at it from a "help the company" perspective. Sure, MS and Sony could start cross-platform sales, but would they see MAJOR gains from it? Not like Nintendo would in that scenario.
* Yes, I acknowledge that MS and Sony are only months away from potentially being in the same boat that Nintendo is. I also acknowledge that the two new consoles could blow up in their faces and Nintendo could come out selling U's like hotcakes on penny-hotcakes day. I just don't think Nintendo is going to get back to selling systems like they did with the Wii, and that they would do better to exit the home console race entirely and focus on third-party publishing side by each with their own handheld hardware and software.
Anyways, like Ultimanecat said: Nintendo doesn't see the benefit, so that's the end of that.

What? How are they going to get Wii U sales on 360/PS3?
He's saying Nintendo needs software sales so they should rub their software all over everything in sight so at least it sells on some platforms.
Except that's still dumb because they can have their cake and eat it too, like they did with 3DS, which also sold less than 5 million a couple months after launch oh god.
It's very much in their best interest to release software that people want so much that they also buy the hardware.

Yeah but they don't need software sales, they need hardware sales :P Worst case scenario the 3DS is now making them boatloads of money, they have plenty of revenue coming in....
(and my point was Wii U needed software sales because it meant people were buying the hardware :P)
Last point I'll make because we've gone way off-topic: it makes sense to me because even IF Nintendo puts out some killer games for their system, they still don't have the third-party support to justify my purchasing a U. In my brain, it would be a better situation to get the handful of great Nintendo games on a system that has plenty of other great games rather than on a system that has the potential to be another shovelware magnet.
And yes, Nintendo obviously needs the hardware sales, but the easier path is software on other platforms.
Done, dropping it, sorry to drag us down this path!
Their major issues are the inability to adjust to the changing market. They did great when Facebook gaming was on the rise, but now it's declining and Mobile is on the rise. They're trying to change over, but employ too many of the same game development "best practices" that were developed for Facebook games. These just don't translate to the mobile market, which is why they're suffering in that market.
There's also lots of other issues internally.
A lot of micro-management from the top down that stifles the creativity and hinders the production of many games.
An over reliance on every game being a blockbuster hit which makes the fun aspect of games suffer while making the money grabbing tactics all too transparent to the users.
And a serious lack of foresight over all. Too many major decisions are quick reactions to sudden changes in the market. If some games jumps to the top of the Top Grossing charts then everyone need to drop everything and change to follow it. Which wastes time, makes for bad design and ultimately puts projects behind schedule. It just means they're always late to the party, and whatever game they're trying to compete with has already faded away by the time their own version hits the market.
I think that early on it was blatant. Later it became well known practice at Zynga, but rather poor taste. Dream Heights/Tiny Tower was a big slap in the face. Sims Social/The Ville was the last straw. Towards the end of my time it was not so much that games were straight up ripped off, but key features would be. Such as the general method or menu flow that a game handles it's multiplayer. The idea being that if it works for that game, it would work for our game.
In general though, most of us knew what game was copying what. Bubble Safari was a copy of Bubble Witch Saga. The Ville was Sims Social. Hidden Chronicles was Gardens of Time. The company didn't call it out for what it was, but you knew because whatever project you were on most likely had similar pressures to match and beat a game on the market.
Severance was pretty awesome though.
I got four months salary plus an additional week for each partial year. I worked almost two years, so I got 4.5 months paid. Plus insurance is paid on top of that.

That's not even going into video content on those sites related to always online, used games, the Kinect 2.0, indie issues, and more. Expect more condemnation is Microsoft steps up and makes a clear statement on those matters. Which is probably why it's not.

I write about video games and stuff. It is fun. Sometimes.
But would you buy the fuck out of Wii U, when you no longer have exclusive Nintendo stuff on there? Cuz that's sort of the point....
I agree, but the screams for Nintendo to do it are the loudest because they have the most recognizable IPs.
You chose the news sites of the tech savvy. My dad saw an article on it on CNN and said he was interested.
They've been skeptical too.

So have a lot of other mainstream sites.
"Not all?"
It's all or nothing.
The second Nintendo says "you don't have to buy Nintendo hardware for Nintendo games" they are done making hardware.

I routinely see American journalists mock video games and those who play them as "kids living in their parents' basement." I thought we were beyond that point. Apparently not.
Considering how much they are pushing TV and sports... Yes. Probably.

But Nintendo doesn't, so that's the end of that.
Umm, Wii U? Like, they need them *a lot*
Exactly my point.
What? How are they going to get Wii U sales on 360/PS3?
Except that's still dumb because they can have their cake and eat it too, like they did with 3DS, which also sold less than 5 million a couple months after launch oh god.
It's very much in their best interest to release software that people want so much that they also buy the hardware.
Yeah but they don't need software sales, they need hardware sales :P Worst case scenario the 3DS is now making them boatloads of money, they have plenty of revenue coming in....
(and my point was Wii U needed software sales because it meant people were buying the hardware :P)
My friend and Ubi keeps saying this but I don't know.
And yes, Nintendo obviously needs the hardware sales, but the easier path is software on other platforms.
Done, dropping it, sorry to drag us down this path!
Severance was pretty awesome though.
Hey Eidos guy, why aren't your games on all platforms?
