PA and Game Informer are now circulating the Giant Bomb rumor with Giant Bomb as the source.
This is going to be hilariously awkward PR wise if the rumor isn't true.
I think what's even funnier is when the whole of the internet reports it's happening and MS has to come out and deny it.
It's pretty much an unwinnable situation for them. If they come out and deny they're doing that, they're recognizing that there is a list of serious problems with the Xbone that people want gone, but won't be changing any of it. If they come out and confirm it, then they also confirm all their justification has been bullshit and the system doesn't need any of that crap. If they don't say anything at all, then people are still pissed at them for having a list of screwups with the Xbone.
Well at least I feel a little vindicated. If always online isn't a requirement, then there are no game enhancing facets of "the cloud" and everyone who assumed it was DRM was right.
If it's true. Which I don't think it is. GB wouldn't be the only site with the rumor going.
I don't think that logic follows. Just because there isn't a complete system online requirement doesn't mean that the cloud services can't have game enhancing features because not every game would necessarily be using those features. A game utilizing the cloud (in whatever way), could still require online, much like a multiplayer game requires online. Unless I'm misunderstanding what you're trying to say...
It was last night with Cerny with the PS4 that Fallon let loose with "Now this is the system that actually lets you play used games right?" referring to the Xbone.
You can't let that message out there to an audience of millions.
Still requires an internet connection
Still "able" to sell or lend your game, with absolutely no in depth details.
That's not to say they aren't doing anything different, but that FAQ doesn't seem to be terribly informative of that fact. It's literally too vague to tell if they changed anything.
Page is messed up, but it looks like the only thing they're dropping is the 24 hour check in. So, no grand reversal.
Still a pretty significiant thing to change; now they just need to announce it at their E3 presentation for the good publicity and... right, no E3 again until next year.
Well, good luck trying to turn some of that bad press around, Microsoft. Even that single DRM change will be enough to get back customers, though; should see a noticeable rise in their preorders for launch day...
...dammit. Microsoft, stop screwing things up so I can say you did something big and right!
I won't ridicule Microsoft for rescinding certain policies. But I've decided a number of days ago already that I would only buy an XBO if Microsoft did change its policies, exchanged some of its executives, and proved, in time, that it did care about its audience, as people, not money.
If they back away, that's certainly a good day for consumer rights. It's a question of how far, though, and how far they are ultimately going to push anyways. Still, stupid rumours.
EDIT: Reading stuff like that FAQ, though, in general, makes me want to wretch.

If someone hadn't already quoted me I would have gone back and deleted that post. Gonna wait for the Microsoft's Cloud to stop buckling under the pressure of HTTP requests.

Shrug, mass market doesn't care about what happens 5 months before a launch. All the launch units will be gone for both systems, and most people have a really short attention span. If the new terms aren't offensive enough to people, I could see this whole internet shitting it's pants for 2 months thing not even really coming to much. They will be blowing the doors off with ad money this fall, so I'm sure they'll have plenty of time to tell their story.
Microsoft is still in a worse position due to pricing when all is said and done, however.
Also webtraffic isn't really analogous to xbox live, but hey.
It's fair to say that this is basically unprecedented right? I mean, this was a core element of their new console and it has been completely removed.
It was also something they could change literally by just altering a few minor bits of code; they wouldn't have had to remove the code, just done something like set a variable or two to be in the "daily check permanently permanently returns an all-green result".
It's basically the easiest, cheapest thing they could have possibly backed off on.

Website: REPORT! Microsoft to no longer eat babies!
Microsoft: No no.. that's just a false rumor, we will in fact still be eating babies.
If Microsoft denies this rumor, there is no way they can possibly win, they will be further vilified and hated by everyone through no fault or action of their own.
It seems all the cloud strife being used as a weapon against Microsoft was a little too much for them to grin and barrett. A quick policy makover should do them a world of good but the avalanche of negative press may have irreversibly crushed a sector of potential buyers. After many long knights of the round-table discussion we've enjoyed together in this terrible thread, it would seem we've hit the final, fantastic stop in this magical journey through billion-dollar schadenfreude. The aeris clear now, the sun is shining. I think today is going to be a good day.

This is a thing, guys.
Let's play Mario Kart or something...
-This is a huge win for consumer rights
-I still will probably get a PS4 first because I don't want to spend an extra $100 for the kinect.
Not going to hold my breath waiting for this rumor to pan out, of course.

Holy shit. It is real.
Tonight?

Though, if they had made this decision a week ago they would have probably had a much nicer E3

Yeah, the whole DRM thing pretty much overshadowed any games they were showing.

I wonder if the people responsible for the disaster of a plan are going to be on any MS shitlists.
The link to the updated info just errors out.

Looks like the link is now down.
Almost certainly, Microsoft is famous for it's internal shitlists and feuding.
From the guy who apologized and championed them endlessly.

If that's the only change: consider me underwhelmed.
I bet this is what the Xbox One's launch would have been like had they actually gone through with it.
Behold the power of The Cloud.
What other things were you unhappy about?

The Xbox Wire website also exploded. This probably says something about whether people cared about the policy...

Used games? The Kinect Requirement?
24 hour checkin would get rid of the used games thing.
The Kinect is part of the system as much as the controller, if you don't like that, then the system just isn't for you.
Seen else where.
Not necessarily.
Well yeah. That's kind of what I said.
So, the change you're wanting is quite literally Microsoft going back and changing history?
