No more always online requirement
The console no longer has to check in every 24 hours
All game discs will work on Xbox One as they do on Xbox 360
Authentication is no longer necessary
An Internet connection is only required when initially setting up the console
All downloaded games will function the same when online or offline
No additional restrictions on trading games or loaning discs
Region locks have been dropped
This would also require changing from a digital only with discs like many Steam games at retail.

21 countries? Shitty treatment of consumers/military in particular (Mattrick and PR)? Shitty treatment of developers (no self-publishing, CD Projekt)?
There are so many legit gripes about this console, complaining it's only launching in 21 countries is insane. Hey, it's called a rollout. These things happen, there aren't enough boxes.

An internet connection will not be required to play offline Xbox One games – After a one-time system set-up with a new Xbox One, you can play any disc based game without ever connecting online again. There is no 24 hour connection requirement and you can take your Xbox One anywhere you want and play your games, just like on Xbox 360.
Trade-in, lend, resell, gift, and rent disc based games just like you do today – There will be no limitations to using and sharing games, it will work just as it does today on Xbox 360.

I would say it's less the initial rollout and more that people have no idea when Microsoft will decide to grace their country by allowing the Xbone to be played there. If Microsoft came out and said "hey, yeah, we'll totally have the rest of the world set within a month of release", that issue would basically go away. But when you've got that issue and the PS4 right next to it that can be played by anyone, anywhere, regardless of where the system or the games came from or internet availability, then people will start coming up with lots of resentment.
Last week at E3, the excitement, creativity and future of our industry was on display for a global audience.
For us, the future comes in the form of Xbox One, a system designed to be the best place to play games this year and for many years to come. As is our heritage with Xbox, we designed a system that could take full advantage of advances in technology in order to deliver a breakthrough in game play and entertainment. We imagined a new set of benefits such as easier roaming, family sharing, and new ways to try and buy games. We believe in the benefits of a connected, digital future.
Since unveiling our plans for Xbox One, my team and I have heard directly from many of you, read your comments and listened to your feedback. I would like to take the opportunity today to thank you for your assistance in helping us to reshape the future of Xbox One.
You told us how much you loved the flexibility you have today with games delivered on disc. The ability to lend, share, and resell these games at your discretion is of incredible importance to you. Also important to you is the freedom to play offline, for any length of time, anywhere in the world.
So, today I am announcing the following changes to Xbox One and how you can play, share, lend, and resell your games exactly as you do today on Xbox 360. Here is what that means:
An internet connection will not be required to play offline Xbox One games – After a one-time system set-up with a new Xbox One, you can play any disc based game without ever connecting online again. There is no 24 hour connection requirement and you can take your Xbox One anywhere you want and play your games, just like on Xbox 360.
Trade-in, lend, resell, gift, and rent disc based games just like you do today – There will be no limitations to using and sharing games, it will work just as it does today on Xbox 360.
In addition to buying a disc from a retailer, you can also download games from Xbox Live on day of release. If you choose to download your games, you will be able to play them offline just like you do today. Xbox One games will be playable on any Xbox One console -- there will be no regional restrictions.
These changes will impact some of the scenarios we previously announced for Xbox One. The sharing of games will work as it does today, you will simply share the disc. Downloaded titles cannot be shared or resold. Also, similar to today, playing disc based games will require that the disc be in the tray.
We appreciate your passion, support and willingness to challenge the assumptions of digital licensing and connectivity. While we believe that the majority of people will play games online and access the cloud for both games and entertainment, we will give consumers the choice of both physical and digital content. We have listened and we have heard loud and clear from your feedback that you want the best of both worlds.
Thank you again for your candid feedback. Our team remains committed to listening, taking feedback and delivering a great product for you later this year.
Guys, the Used Game DRM is also gone, if the rumor is true. The only thing that people didn't like about it that still remains is kinect being required and the higher price tag. I'm still going PS4 first, but I'll definitely pick up an Xbone when Halo 5 hits if this is all true (assuming it's down to at least $400 by then).
Everything is still the same minus the 24 hour check in.

It will be interesting to see if the one time internet activation prevents the console from working outside of those 21 countries. If so it can be imported. If not then it's a another huge mistake.

Unstated was that all of their Cloud talk was pure BS.
I don't get what all your harping on the Cloud is about. The cloud != online requirement. The cloud computing/storage stuff they have available to developers is a totally separate issue from a system wide online requirement. Cloud computing exists and is a real thing, http://www.windowsazure.com/ and it's possible that some games might still implement an online requirement on their own to make use of it, just like a multiplayer only game would.

The Kinect is part of the system as much as the controller, if you don't like that, then the system just isn't for you.
Man, don't be like that. The Xbone doesn't get a free pass on a shitty design decision just because it isn't "for" us. Worst argument on the planet.
Why, it's the same thing as with the PS3? It had a controller that I though was shitty, so I didn't buy one.
It was the same with the Wii. I didn't like the input mechanisms, so I sold it after 6 months.

Yeah, if you don't like 24-hour check-ins, don't buy an x-box one either!
Yeah, that argument doesn't fly now.
And it was the same argument that you were putting forth; namely if you don't like something about the One, then just give up and don't buy it.
Ok, then I'm going to go on and on about how utterly atrocious the PS3 is for having the worst controller of a modern console, and never shut up about it.

This seems like it would take some major software rejiggering, too. I mean, it was a fundamental part of their new console. Could be be as simple as changing a line of code to turn it all off? I bet MS is scrambling to fix it internally. Would really like to be a fly on the wall there....

Most of it should be easy enough to change. The only part that would require more than a few changes would probably be changing how the system works to a normal disc based system that doesn't require any activation, requires the disc to be in the drive, etc.

Try to play one of 95% of games on the market on the PS3 without a controller.
Now do the same thing with the 360 without the Kinect.
Now look at the Xbone and come up with a reasonable argument as to why the Kinect isn't basically a totally superfluous 100-dollar surcharge for a dedicated gaming console.
The Kinect thing isn't bad because the system isn't "for" us, it's bad because it's a completely unnecessary built-in addition for a gaming console. If it was really that important, Microsoft could just sell it separately and people would buy the heck out of it. I don't like the PS3 controller either, but that doesn't mean the system isn't "for" me, it just means I don't like the controller; I still recognize it's an ACTUALLY vital part of the system instead of just a pack-in laden with PR bullshit with features that most of the people in the market won't even be able to USE.

Well, it's a bit late for that seeing as how the PS4 is due out later this year (which, shock shock, has a controller redesigned based on feedback.)

It's not like Microsoft might change its mind.
Lets cause enough of an uproar about something a company is doing that they completely change their policy on it.
And instead of recognizing that this is a good way for a company to operate, lets continue to act like it's an issue.
Seems like a good plan to get the message across to corporations, if you even dare think about something we don't like, you're done.
Haha How are you conflating thought control with policy?
As potential customers, Microsoft probably wants our feedback anyway.
Edit: Are you not seeing this in the context of Microsoft's recent policy change?
I'm saying I'm seeing where this is heading.
The loudest people on here that shouted about the 24 hour checking and used games (correctly, I would add), aren't going to let it go now that it's no longer an issue.
At this point, I have a ton more respect for Microsoft than I did Sony around 2006. Microsoft actually listened and improved the console based on customer feedback. The PS3 still cost $599 at launch.
Microsoft has shown it's willing to not let hubris get in the way of making good decisions.
Keep talking about the Kinect and the price and anything else you don't like about the system. Just remember that those things weren't universally hated like the 24 hour checking and the used game shit.

So now that it is over, what do you think made MS decide to do the whole DRM thing in the first place? Did their internal marketing research show that people would accept it or were they really retarded and just assumed people would accept it?

Microsoft has shown it's willing to not let hubris get in the way of making good decisions.
In terms of effort, all Microsoft has done is announced they'll punt around a few bits of superfluous code that were making the system less functional than if the code had never existed. This change has now placed them at the bare minimum of console functionality, and they did it with a bare minimum of effort.
Now, if Microsoft turned around and said "hey, we know the Kinect pack-in is stupid and will be removing it from the system", that would actually be an impressive change that shows they're actually listening to consumers. It would be a genuine admission they oversold their own ideas to themselves, and require some real effort to make spec changes in the system itself.
This business with the DRM is just Microsoft looking at the list of cheapest, quickest fixes they could make; it's far, far from a difficult adjustment on their part.
So now that it is over, what do you think made MS decide to do the whole DRM thing in the first place? Did their internal marketing research show that people would accept it or were they really retarded and just assumed people would accept it?
I really think it stemmed from wanting to do mandatory installs without having to have the disc in the drive to play the game, and then spiderwebbed out from there.
A small thing (that's a minor minor annoyance) made them do some really stupid shit.
It'd be interesting to know, I think, if Microsoft has opened itself up to lawsuits; not from buyers, but from partners. After all, I think the main point they played up in probably all the meetings they had (and they apparently had a lot) is now gone.

I really think it stemmed from wanting to do mandatory installs without having to have the disc in the drive to play the game, and then spiderwebbed out from there.
A small thing (that's a minor minor annoyance) made them do some really stupid shit.
We'll see, I guess.
