Are We wasting our lives away playing video games?
I would like to know, do you think that people are wasting their lives away from playing video games? Often I would get this kind of responce from my teachers or older adults who have never played a video game and they say that people playing them are wasting their time. They think that people who play video game should do more "productive" things with their activities like: studying, socializing, reading, watching movies, going to see the world, etc. But why is it that video games are seen as a "Waste of time"? How is that any less different from what everyone else is doing? This has been a problem on my mind for the last few months. I don't want to give up video games because I just bought a whole bunch of steam games on my list and I have yet not played them. And then someone comes and tells me that I am wasting my life on them is kind of rude. What do you think?

We should be spending time bettering ourselves, like learning how to create things of value and selling them, cooking, programming, art. But sometimes those things are less entertaining to us than the things that produce nothing of value.
You can waste time playing games that do not engage you or promote your overall happiness compared to other activities, but this is true of anything, even productive things. If you keep on making widgets well-beyond the needs of your clients, you're wasting your time being "productive."
I absolutly know what you mean, but..... those aren't exactly the best examples. Or it exposes the flaw of that line of thinking in the first place. If the entertainment itself has no value, how does its creation?
@OP: Here's the thing: Yes, you are. You're probably wasting your time at any given moment actually. If someone argues about it again, why don't you analyze the actual value of what they're proposing right back? Because in most cases it's not going to be that much more productive. Still, don't just play video games. Be aware that you can do both. Contributing to society and satisfying your own personal needs.
As I start to design games and learn programming I find it helps me remain focused on being productive with extremely challenging situations in the learning process that is involved in that.
I was always into games but never a huge gamer, now it's a functional part of my life that has a significant amount of meaning. So in my situation, I would say gaming has a lot of value to me. I enjoy it.

Some people take it too far, but some people take knitting too far. I don't know that gaming can be singled out as significantly worse (or better) than other hobbies.
Geth, close the thread.
