I got carried away after he killed one of my bases and I decided to rebuild/redrone another. Held 4sddddddddddddddddddddd a bit too much
If I had lost, I'd 100% agree with you guys. I took care to engage as close as possible to his bases and rally near my bases. Also, 3x manner hatches in front of his nat kept him busy.

I do this 100%. Also I've got into the mindset that whenever I don't know what to do, I build drones. So when I'm pressured I'll just automatically build drones in a rush cause my brain has frozen.
I had a tortuous game against a T the other day where I just couldn't beat him. Finally took him down and grumbled about how ludicrous T is at comebacks.
Looked at the graphs; I'd made over 150 drones. He didn't successfully harass at all (I shut it down well) and quite a few of those drones were used for buildings. But still....
I think I'm coming to this critical point where not everyone just dies to my early/midgame pressure and then I have no idea what to transition into or do since I never get as far as hive tech ever so I just die trying to cram an endless sea of hydras down their throats.
vs P: mutas
vs T: ehhhh tech to hive, make ultra/ling/bling
vs Z: roach/hydra, deny bases
(actually the "deny bases" step is good vs all)
Mass upgraded lings into ultra also seems to work. Or at least always does when I go roach hydra. Similarly mutas are viable in ZvZ because if they don't make a bunch of spores you can still cause severe damage. Plus people don't expect them

I will try these things shwaip.
As I get a little farther I occasionally think "maybe this free form lack of build orders just isn't FOR me. Maybe playing reactionary isn't my thing, it doesn't jive with my mindset." A failure to grok perhaps.
And then I think "maybe I should quit being such a wuss and figure it out."

Build orders for zerg are just like any other race, so don't try to play by the seat of your pants every game. The illusion that zerg build orders don't matter comes from the fact that zerg has less early-game timings available to them so they are naturally not in control of the tempo in the early game. This means that zerg has to react to what protoss or terran are doing. The fallacy is that people think this implies that zerg has no build orders to utilize, but this is false. To optimally react in this situation, you still need:
(1) A build order plan going into the possible timing that optimizes your economy,
(2) A build order plan to respond to the timing your opponent is planning (that you discover via scouting), and
(3) A build order plan to transition from defending into the tech of your choice.
Rather than a single, linear build order to propel you into the mid-game, you have a series of build orders that you can mix-and-match to the situation at hand. Note that this is no different for any of the three races especially into the mid- and end-game as you will naturally have to respond to what your opponent does. It's just that because zerg play defensively in the early game, they demand this level of flexibility earlier on.

I think I have the problem the most against mech, because I end up with a lot of minerals and (if I'm on top of injects), a lot of larva. I know that lings are basically useless, so I put it all into drones and end up with 100+ drones and a tiny army. Turning the drones into spines would definitely be a good idea.

That's true. I basically only know the hatch/pool timings based on how greedy I want to be and do everything else by ear.

So how does everyone feel about TLO and Stephano being placed in the same finals group? You know, the one with GSL champ Soulkey?
Poor TLO. And Stephano as well, although I have confidence he'll get out of his group along with Soulkey.
The flipside is that this means that if does get out of the group, he won't see soulkey until the finals. It also means that we might have an early elimination of Soulkey/Innovation which will pave the way for someone else to take the global finals.

He should also ask where the third bases on all the maps are.
Because he can't seem to find them and is forced to 2 base all in all the time, you see.
Something like
"Well gg
I dont see how this is even fair
We played each other so many times"
then he quit
