I love that this Xbone nickname has taken off. I predict it will be called the Xbone for the rest of its life.

We may never know who coined the nickname since it occurred to everyone watching the conference simultaneously.

Easy solution to the "always on" Kinect problem. Remember what you did in college when you were screwing around with something, and didn't want it looking at you? Brown paper bag.

In fact, I'm going to make millions selling official "unofficial" brown bags for the Xbone.

<insert joke about "better double bag it" here>

One of my all time favourite Checkpoints. Yes, you had a lot of material to work with, but a remarkable job is a remarkable job nonetheless.

    Hats off!

Is it installing games on the PS3 people don't like, or just how blood slow it is? I have both a PS3 and 360 and even on the 360 I will always choose to install a game I plan to play.

I'd rather wait the 5 minutes to not have to hear my Xbox sounding like it's taxiing on the runway.

If they didn't mean to factor in the XBone subtext, they lucked-out-to-fuck. What's that song "The playbone ... connected to the ... XBone..., the XBone connected to the... DebtBone... the ... DebtBone connected to the... CryBone the.... CryBone connected to ... AloneBone, AloneBone connected to the.. PlayBone... and THAT's what makes RESULTS...
    "

I noticed that too. On the second half you decided to shotgun back and forth to get all the points. I was like "wow this is going quick". Nice dodge on the pre-used games issue. I'm sure there will plenty of material on that subject when it Microsoft clears it up so it doesn't look like an aquarium of opaque pancake batter.

It is a terrible time to be a console gamer. Console wars should be about which system is better, not which system is less bad. Why are they all taking the worst parts of what it means to be a PC but giving their gamers none of the benefits? Free online play, infinite backward compatibility, free Netflix, competing online stores, free online chat and video chat, thriving and brilliant indie community... oh, wait, it's because most of those have the words free and competition and support in them...

@Siddown - XBox 360 games on a single dual-layer DVD were less than 9 GB. An install would take less than 10 minutes, because it didn't take more than 10 minutes to copy < 9 GB of data to your hard drive.

The XBone is using the same type of SATA hard drive (no faster), but game sizes are much larger due to larger textures, 1080p videos, etc. If you suddenly have to copy 25 GB of data, then the install time is only going up.

    Joy!

Conversely, Sony has new technology in the PS4 to allow you to copy the game to the hard drive while simultaneously playing it. You can even play digital download games before finishing downloading them.

I would have cared more about the piece about the Ouya and E3 if I cared about E3. However, since it went invitation only (for guests as well as participants) I just can't be bothered to care about the elitist boys club gathering, and honestly, I have to say that if the Ouya display pulls people (read: reporters) out of E3 to cover the exciting things happening there, it will show exactly how irrelevant E3 has become.

Still, it isn't like anyone has a crystal ball on the subject...

@enderandrew The Xbox One also allows you to play with a partial install.

@RPotter the link you gave states "With Xbox One, you can start playing immediately as games install. And updates install seamlessly in the background, so your games and entertainment won’t be interrupted." It sounds like the games have to be fully installed (i.e. copied from disc) before playing, but updates won't stop you from playing (compared to now, where an update has to be downloaded and installed before you can play the game). It doesn't rule out partial installs, but it doesn't promise it either.

@enderandrew while Blu-ray discs hold more data, they also transfer data a lot faster due to the data being closer together. SATA doesn't really enter into it, since the interface is faster than either drive (hell, it's faster than all HDDs). The chart on this article puts Blu-ray being around 3-4 times faster than DVD at 12x:

    @enderandrew

So they are a bit misleading in the episode. It's not that people don't like installs, they don't like slow installs.

I was under the impression that PS3 is just really slow at installs even if the content wasn't all that big. I'll admit, I have one but I actually don't use it all that often. If a game comes out on both systems, I prefer the 360 just because I like the controller better.

The installs on PS3 aren't that slow, but I'm less inclined to be patient with any progress bar I see on my screen after already waiting through one of the frequent system updates.

Having to install PSN games after downloading them is pretty derpy, though, when the same title is a 'download and press A' proposition on XBL.

So the new xbox has the ability to monitor whether or not you have actually watched the commercials, and could theoretically refuse to continue playing the TV show you were watching until you do.

  • RPotterRPotter Registered User regular
@marsilies I'm not certain why you read that from that sentence. Look at "immediately as game install". I don't see how that could imply that games must be fully installed, because it outright states the opposite. "Immediately" - without wait. "as games install" - coincident with installation. It seems pretty cut and dry.

It'll be the future by then, guhh. Just tell your Miranda Kerrbot to watch the commercials for you, while you grab a Slurm Cola.

I keep seeing people talking about the terrible things Microsoft could "theoretically" do. Yeah, they could "theoretically" make sure I'm watching the commercials when I watch TV. Of course, I get my TV through a satellite provider, and Microsoft doesn't see a penny of that revenue. And if my Xbox were to start giving me guff about not watching commercials, I'd just plug my DVR back into my TV instead of my Xbox. All it would gain them is me being really annoyed at my Xbox.

But sure, "theoretically" they could do that.

Gonna need a citation on that "record everything you say and do at all times" thing, what with that being illegal in a two-party consent state, like Washington (you know, the state Microsoft is based in).

Nah, I'm just kidding. I know y'all are gonna keep thinking up the most heinous, grievous, abhorrent behavior Microsoft could hypothetically engage in and taking it as confirmed, incontrovertible fact. You go with your bad self.
