welcome back from a holiday weekend (if you're an Amuurrrican). Tell us about stories from your job! I got a new thunderbolt display for my work setup, and it is super awesome. I don't think I've ever worked on such nice gear for my work computer

I have 13 minutes left of work, then I'm off for 2 weeks to visit my family in Australia

It's not a great sign when you're seeing family and friends for the first time in 10 months and the thing you're most excited about is getting away from work for 8 days.

Sounds like a standard vacation to me, @#pipe!

I'm sure you'll feel differently once you're there. And then probably feel differently again after you're there a few days. At least that's how it goes for me.

So I've been housekeeping at motel for threeish weeks.

My head housekeeper has said that my rooms were so good that she didn't even really need to check them.

and then I get told that oh whoops you've been doing it wrong the entire time not to mention quite a few unkind words with regards to my character overall from the manager of another property, regardless of the fact I haven't ever engaged in the behavior he was criticizing. Kinda bothered by that!

    Oh well.

Applied for a job today and was asked if I had a copy of my high school diploma with me. I've been out of high school for nearly 14 years, this is the first time I have *ever* been asked for my diploma. Still, going to try to find it, or get my school to dig it out of the archives... this job would be ideal, right number of hours, right time of day, and the experience would be perfect on my portfolio.

I have an interview for another short-term contract gig at a game company. It will be a work-from-home thing apparently so that's neat.

It would appear that the company plans on staying on 12 hour shifts for a while. So that's pretty exciting

Also, working 12 hours on Monday made me FAT stacks of cash

Work was interesting today. I watched an elderly man in a large pick up back into a Subaru, hit the car lightly, pull forward, then still not see the Subaru (who was honking her horn the whole time) and then he backed up harder and dented the car. Before anyone else could move, the old lady in the Subaru drove off and the befuddled old guy drove his truck over the curb turning around and left too. It was bizarre. After thinking about it, I think the lady might not have had insurance or something.

I also watched a guy sprint out of another entrance with a gas powered leaf blower under his arm, jump into his car and speed off. The blower was then returned by his girlfriend using a receipt from another store. I missed the return because I was at lunch.

Thankfully I have a pre-interview writing test tomorrow at the local branch of a Japanese government office for an executive assistant position. I don't know how it will go. I'll have to edit, proofread, and speech writing.

Work is a roller coaster of emotions.

Last night I thought everything I had done had mysteriously broken after an easy merge.
Thankfully I figured that out this morning and it was okay. Yay more stuff into prod.

I am so relaxed right now. Waiting until the bugs start pouring in.
I'm a crazy perfectionist though, and everything feels pretty clean so I anticipate there won't be all that many.

also I can't quite figure out if allergy-dude-who-sits-behind-me has been fired or not. He's been 'last-chance'-ing at least twice in the last month, and then he went up to london for the long weekend, decided to stay an extra day with no notice, and told the boss via a text message to another coworker. So yesterday boss was like "Nup, he's toast!" Now he's behind me updating the internal documentation for his project, so I don't know if that's a "do this and then git" situation or "ok ABSOLUTELY last chance!" situation.

I suspect the former, but he's come back from the almost-certainly-dead before.

    Pff. Like he ever apologises.

Actually the robot would be a huge improvement in most regards.

anyway, full story has now been unearthed. Yes, he's been fired, and the only thing left for him to do is commit all his code updates and fill in any documentation that seems important - but he will still be here on and off for the rest of the week because he asked if he could stay around until he'd finished building his buzz lightyear cosplay costume, which he's been working on during lunch hours.

Gotta admire someone with their priorities straight.

Woo, me and my buddy are closing down our store in the next few weeks so we can finally get real jobs which means working less, having less responsibility and getting paid more!

Still a lot of work to be done, and also jobs needing hunting.

My brother in law and father in law have been looking around at their respective workplaces for computer job openings. They may have found some leads!
So now I may get to work for the gubmint, or a biomedical research place which will most assuredly be responsible for the zombie uprising.
Hope that the money is good!

    which lesson applies here

that he should walk out of the meeting promising to be back in a moment only to make them wait 30 minutes while he smokes a bowl

or that he should run through all the void zones in a panic and die 60 seconds into the interview, and lie on the floor until they go away

I don't think we have a clause like that :P. But it was an ongoing project he had when he arrived in any case, he's just been using our workshop tools and some material offcuts to construct it.

boss was like "well as long as I'm not paying him and we're not needing the equipment, he can do whatever!" But there is an air of bafflement to the statement.

Perhaps ironically, one of the reasons he was hired is that the boss thought his cosplay hobby showed he had creativity, artistic sense and experience with low-level manufacturing tools.

We had a few machinists (guys that would fabricate new parts from metal for submarines and aircraft) onboard my ships in the navy what would take the left over scrap metal and use the milling/machining equipment to make their own prop lightsabers (no electronics for sounds or place for led rods to be inserted).

I always liked their designs more because it was literally hand crafted and unique like how it's suppose to be.
