by all accounts GRRM is still just as torn up about the RW as most fans if not more so. He's said before in interview that it was the very last scene he wrote in A Storm of Swords, he wrote the entire rest of the book around it because it was so difficult to do, and after he finished his draft he sent the novel in and let the publisher edit it cause he couldnt bear to read it again.
