Sunfire is pretty standard on Shen because he's gonna be splitpushing half the game and he needs the additional waveclear

If he doesn't start boots, gank him mercilessly. If he does start boots, he has pretty low sustain so its just a matter of picking a champ that wont be harassed out of lane before Yorick goes oom, which is Cho'gath / Nunu / Nasus. A well played Jayce / Nidalee (post 6) / Riven are all really strong against him too (possibly Trynd & Aatrox too). Which means he's counterable in lane and doesn't have a strong teamfight presence by your own words, so I'm not sure why we aren't talking about buffing him. He also has low enough movement speed that he wont be roaming for ganks.

Without a tear when facing Nasus / Nunu / Cho'gath, Yorick will run OOM before those champs are low on HP for him to be able to push them out, which leaves him prime for ganking. By the time he has tear, they should be able to outsustain him.

Yes, you can counterpick him, but he has absolutely no counterplay. Either you have enough sustain to survive him in lane, or you don't. That is what makes him so awful. He is an abomination who should not exist at all, and he wouldn't except Riot was extremely rushed when they created him, and then couldn't be bothered to do anything about it after they buffed him into being playable. Xelnath is throwing down the gauntlet on Yorick. It only took 2 years of him being the most bullshit champion in the game, but better late than never I guess!

Laning against Jayce isn't 'bad', neither is Nidalee. neither is a Draven/Janna lane, honestly. It's just not fun.
In the end, Riot worries a lot about what is fun in the game, because people don't enjoy the game if it isn't fun. Surprising.
