Current PC Epics - Hit me!

zhen_roguezhen_rogue Registered User regular
edited March 2007 in Games and Technology
I need your recommendations for fantastic/epic PC games that have been released over the past 2 years or so.

I've recently obtained a new ship-of-the-line system that can currently play anything on the market - which is a big upgrade from my dell dimension 4500 of six years ago.

Consequently, I need some solid, heavy-hitting titles that i've been missing up till now.

I already have:
Oblivion
NWN2
WoW
EVE

I'm considering:
X3 Reunion (does this still have starforce? yuk)
Supreme Commander
F.E.A.R.

What else is out there, PA?

EDIT
Suggested so far:
HL2
S.T.A.L.K.E.R.
DMoMM
Gothic3
HW2
Rise of Legends
Bookworm Adventures
C&C3
V:TM-Bloodlines
KotOR, KotOR 2
NOLF, NOLF 2
CoH
DDO
Doom3
Civ4
WH40k: DoW + expansions
TitanQuest + expansions
MaxPayne
M:Total War, R:Total War

To be honest X3 has a learning curve that isn't worth the trouble.
F.E.A.R. is fun until you get to the office levels.
Supreme Commander is a just ok RTS game.

As you can see I find it harder and harder to find any games that I can really enjoy.

Hell yeah you are. Download Steam and get them DLing right fucking now. Play HL1 then HL2 and both before Oblivion. Unless you don't care about graphics. Oblivion might ruin your perceptions.

The scenery's a bit boring and repetitive, but they do mix it up with unfinished sections of the building and a parking garage. The latter contains one of the best firefights in the game.

Download Steam and buy Half-Life and its two expansions, Half-Life 2 and HL2: Episode 1, Vampire: The Masquerade - Bloodlines, and also pick up both Knights of the Old Republic and KOTOR2, and then get Homeworld 2, No One Lives Forever and NOLF 2, and maybe some other stuff once I remember them.

I loved playing Company of Heros. I like the way they did resources. The tech trees are solid and vary according to your playstyle.

The Warhammer 40K RTS is good. I avoid online play though.

You could play DDO if you enjoy the color brown.

eh, wait a little while on STALKER. Isn't that great. Needs some patches, too.

But I can't believe you haven't played HL (Including Opposing Forces and Blue shift) and HL2. It has been called the greatest game of all time

Ah crap, now i gotta go play me some HL.

i agree he should wait, but only because of not playing HL2. regardless, stalker is a ridiculously good game and will become a classic. especially after the mod community gets a hold of it, it will enhance it just like Oblivion.

I'm not a big shooter fan, at least not for singleplayer (which is probably why I didn't think that much of HL2), but I really disagree with you about the original Half-Life and expansions. Half-life is 'fps done right' and stands up well over time as a universally good game for that reason. Play the first ten minutes and let the game convince you.

The X games are starforce free on Steam, but they are infamous for their learning curve. Been playing X2 recently, its really fun, if you take the time to figure stuff out and aren't expecting a high action space shooter like Freelancer/Freespace. It really shines in the trading system and the ability to set up multiple ships doing trade routes. (It seems to me like a much prettier and more complicated Escape Velocity)

HL2 is amazing for what it is, a very linear awesome FPS, with a really cool environment/setting. Its crazy fun, and even if you don't like the vehicle segments, stick with it because the last level is more than worth it.

Titan Quest (and the expansion Immortal Throne) are great games if you liked diablo, they are very similar.

Warhammer 40K: Dawn of War is a great scifi RTS, has several expansions, the most recent is stand alone.
I've also heard good things about Company of Heroes, although i haven't played it yet.

Titan Quest just had an expansion that came out that added a lot of things the game sorely needed. I dunno if many people would consider the game "epic" but it's pretty damn fun. You can get both the main game and expansion for 45 bucks from Direct2Drive, and someone mentioned they're bundling them for 30 (the price of the expansion itself at most vendors) from circuit city. I just started playing it, I think it's worth your time.

I played both for about 2 hours apiece, and I stopped, bored. For me at least, it didn't really add anything new or interesting. But, I'm admittedly not a huge fps fan in the first place, so take that with a grain of salt.

Ooh, now that I think about it, I WOULD recommend the Max Payne's, though. Probably my favorite shooters ever.

If you've not been gaming on consoles either than I'd heartily recommend Test Drive: Unlimited (buy an X360 gaming pad to go with it). I also really enjoyed Tomb Raider: Legend.

Have to say though, S.T.A.L.K.E.R. is one of the best games in the last few years and should instantly be bumped to the top of any must have list. DMoMM was certainly awesome though and a worthy additional consideration.

Half-Life 2 is excellent. You don't really need to have played the first one so don't worry about it. Also Episode 1 was good and there are some decent mods out now too, Dystopia is one I know off the top of my head.

I really enjoyed Gothic 3. (Also don't worry about playing the previous ones) It's kinda buggy but i'm sure some patches have came out since I last played it.

It has a fair amount of both kind of scares. I will also second it's scaryness. Although after a couple hours of play the scarey feeling goes away and you start to feel like nothing can scare you. Atleast thats how it was for me.

    F.E.A.R. keeps the monster-through-window
    or in this case, invisible-ninja-clone-soldier-through-window
scares to a minimum. A lot of it's atmospheric, stuff like barely catching a glimpse of something out of the corner of your eye (or did you? :O) or one of my favorites, that tense, violin-fueled buildup to nothing. Sprinkled throughout the game are some great OH GOD WHAT WAS THAT moments, especially towards the end.
