Starforce and disc checks were removed in X2: The Threat and X3: Reunion with the later patches. The 2.0 patch for X3 which removed Starforce added a bunch of content as well. Including the oppurtunity for the player to obtain a HQ which allows the player to reverse engineer, build and paint ships.

Yes, everyone should play it right now if they haven't already.
Oh and by looking at your list so far, I'd say most of them are fine although Doom 3 bored me to tears (well, almost anyway). Didn't really care much for FEAR either, even though I loved much of the action in it. Like someone else already posted, the writing/story was just so bad that it ruined it for me (the same can be said for Titan Quest, although it didn't bother me quite as much as FEAR did). If you don't care much for the story in a FPS though, you should probably just pick it up.
