Cohhcarnage and friends managed to destroy one AT-AT in the first opening and almost kill the other with 12 or so Y-Wings and all the turrets and firepower they could muster on both.

It shows that with a lot of coordination the Rebels can do it and they are poised to win this round, but generally the map still feels more heavily in the Imperial's favour because of their land walker options and orbital strikes via the AT-AT. Imperials can basically just focus on denying turrets and air superiority to win and let the walkers coast them to victory.

They then proceeded to win as the Rebels twice in a row and Cohh was able to take down an AT-AT with tow-cables. He also wrecked shit as Vader. Well, the Rebel team wrecked their own shit as they continuously tried to shoot Vader as he was deflecting every single blaster shot. Anyway, once they figured everything out, they were taking down the AT-ATs to 50% before they got to the second marker.

Just watched the Luke vs Darth vader vid on Page 13

    Wow that looks disappointing.

Like, Jedi Knight 2 had better looking jedi combat.

    Edit:Where are the amputations?

Now I just want a Chivalry game but Star Wars.

Well, Jedi Knight was based around a lightsaber system. This isn't so much "lightsaber dueling" as it is a power-up. Disney owns Star Wars now, with games like this that they want EVERYONE to buy, it's gonna be homogenized like it is to appeal to everyone.

EA has the license to all future Star Wars games for another 9 years. Buckle up.

Yeah I'm not sure why you expected a fully developed lightsaber fighting system just for an occasional powerup in a shooter.

So I've been playing for several hours now, hit Rank 5 (Max for the Beta). so impressions time!

    -Menus are slick as hell
-Upgrade system is nice, REALLY wish that character customization was already in, but it leaves something cool to work on when the game releases.
-Drop Zone is fun as hell. I really enjoy that mode quite a bit. The pods will spawn some random drops after a successful defense which are nice. Especially fun is when you get the Prox Mine and drop it right near a pod waiting for someone to try and cap it.
-Walker Assault is fun, but REALLY needs a tutorial on how to fly the snowspeeders. I died so badly every time I tried piloting one... so you know... movie accurate!
-Havent managed to play as a hero yet, but they are a pain in the ASS to fight against. On the plus side you can see Vader from a mile away on Hoth... down side... he's still gonna kill you.

-Biggest plus I've got to say for the game is that it seems to have gotten the Star Wars feel RIGHT. The music is fantastic, the sound effects are perfect, laser fire across the map... The graphics are gorgeous, and it LOOKS like Star Wars. Old, beat up, dirty, and stuff looks like it really has seen some use in a war.

I'm having a lot of fun so far, and I cant wait to see the other 5 multiplayer modes(!!!) and try stuff like the Hero Battles.

Damn, I've been watching all the videos and this game looks really good. But dear god if I don't think I can watch another video of walker assault. I realize the battle of Hoth one of the most iconic battles in star wars but I've already played it hundreds of fucking times in like 10 different games so I think I'll probably pass in this one. I don't really get excited tripping up an AT-AT anymore.

But I'm really excited to see some of the other maps! The drop zone one looks amazing and I can't wait to see what else they have in store.

Why are weapon unlocks still a thing in 2015?

The pod drop mode is really fucking awful, but the game tells me I shouldn't play the Big Kid Mode because people apparently love ass-backward game mechanics so I have to wait until I actually get stuff.

Preload starts today. I want to jump in at midnight. With how inconsistent PSN download speeds are in Europe, it could take a half an hour or two days to download the 8ish GBs of the Beta.

The Jedi Knight series was a rare, beautiful gem and it's hard to find many lightsaber combat-oriented games as tactile as Outcast and Academy, but it was a shooter second (albeit a competent Quake-like one). Battlefront 2's precedent of using lightsaber and Force-powered characters was similarly lacklustre so I'm not really surprised that this new iteration is the same

  • SatsumomoSatsumomo Rated PG! Registered User regular
The game heavily favored rebels during the alpha, so it looks like they did some balance changes for this beta.

  • TychoCelchuuuTychoCelchuuu PIGEON Registered User regular
I imagine it's tough to balance Walker Assault because the difference between a team of Rebels who understand that they have to capture the uplinks and then shoot the AT-AT vs a team of Rebels who are fucking idiots who can't hold a concept in their head at one time if it has two separate parts and who therefore just shoot people is huge, whereas the difference between a team of Imperials who understand that they have to capture the uplinks vs a team of Imperials who are fucking idiots who can't hold a concept in their head at one time if it has two separate parts and who therefore just shoot people isn't that big, because Imperials who just shoot people are helping much more than Rebels who just shoot people.

So, if you balance as if both teams are idiots, it's much too easy if the Rebels aren't idiots, and if you balance as if both teams are smart, it's much too hard for the Rebels if they're idiots, and if you balance as if one team is idiots and the other is smart, you don't know which team to make the idiots.

I'm leaning now towards people just needing time to learn how to Rebel on Hoth and get the requisite anti walker stuff ready for the right times. Imps still have it pretty easy but that's kind of the point, because it's Hoth.

The only sadness now is that AT-ATs are a 1 min deal. I understand why that is, but still. I only get to laugh maniacally for so long.

Hardline has a nice system, from what I understand. You use your ingame cash earnings to buy the guns you want. So there was still progression of sorts, but you could progress how you wanted intead of having to wait to to reach a certain rank to unlock a gun. I understand that most gamers crave that CoD style unlockable system to keep them invested(I used to love it too, but now I'm kind of over it) and that's fine I guess, but Hardline's method sounds like a nice compromise.

And then Battlefield 2 and CoD: ModWar1 came out, and nearly everybody praised the unlock system as giving multiplayer a longer-term goal system. Personally, these days I don't mind unlocks, but back in Battlefield 2/2142, I didn't play multiplayer (only co-op vs. AI), and it suuuuuuucked playing the medic class and not having the defib-paddles (the only way I ever got to play with them was waiting for a medic-bot to die and picking up that kit).

I still like the unlock system in CoD, but I don't want it in every game I play. It actively makes some games worse.

  • DonnictonDonnicton Registered User regular
I may certainly be wrong on this, but I feel that the tendency for anything Star Wars to just be a factory that prints money will give it plenty of long-term longevity even without an unlock system. Provided it's a quality game.

  • JediabiwanJediabiwan Registered User regular
I definitely love having some sort of unlock system as it gives a nice feeling of accomplishment and progression. What can I say, I like making bars go up. But I really wish it could be applied to something other than weapons so you don't need to play for days/weeks before being able to equip the best load-out.

Don't look at me--I never bought any of the expansions for Battlefield 4 because I had zero interest in filling up bars for weapons I didn't actually want, only to be asked (on these forums), "What the hell are you playing BF4 for then?"

Apparently, "Because I like shooting guys sometimes," didn't cut it.

I really just want to shoot mans (on PS4) with some competent players; is there a signup list somewhere about?

I have never played a Battlefield game, but I played the ever-loving heck out of Battlefront II on PS2. Do we know if there is going to be a single-player vs AI bit in this Battlefront? So many good memories of Galactic Conquest (shooting faces all day!)

There were only two Battlefield games that didn't feature an unlock system: Battlefield 1942 and Battlefield: Vietnam. And in those games, classes were stuck with fixed loadouts. A few months back I hopped into BF1942 because it was free on Origin (my brother wanted to try it out), and I was pretty well bored by the experience. Now, I know that my opinion isn't shared by everybody, but when there's no variety, I lose incentive to keep playing real fast.

EDIT - whoops...forgot about Battlefield 1943 (which also didn't have unlocks)
