I really just want to shoot mans (on PS4) with some competent players; is there a signup list somewhere about?
I have never played a Battlefield game, but I played the ever-loving heck out of Battlefront II on PS2. Do we know if there is going to be a single-player vs AI bit in this Battlefront? So many good memories of Galactic Conquest (shooting faces all day!)
I'm fairly certain there's going to be no singleplayer/offline modes. Bit of a bummer =/

The pod drop mode is really fucking awful, but the game tells me I shouldn't play the Big Kid Mode because people apparently love ass-backward game mechanics so I have to wait until I actually get stuff.
How do you have a Battlefield-style game (Battlefront included) without it though? Unlock skins?
In the olden days, Battlefield games didn't have unlocks of any kind. You could just play the game and have fun with all the stuffs.
There were only two Battlefield games that didn't feature an unlock system: Battlefield 1942 and Battlefield: Vietnam. And in those games, classes were stuck with fixed loadouts. A few months back I hopped into BF1942 because it was free on Origin (my brother wanted to try it out), and I was pretty well bored by the experience. Now, I know that my opinion isn't shared by everybody, but when there's no variety, I lose incentive to keep playing real fast.
EDIT - whoops...forgot about Battlefield 1943 (which also didn't have unlocks)
I play(ed) Project Reality.
No unlocks, everything is available if you learn how to use it, extremely solid gameplay, it's still got a dedicated fan base and I imagine it's going to explode when Squad comes out.
Then again, I have nothing against unlocks depending on the type.
If they take forever and give you a severe disadvantage to those who have them fuck that.
If you can buy unlocks fuck that.
Like one big glaring example is PS2. The antitank rocket launcher works fine on ground vehicles.
If there's air vehicles? Too bad, the Rocket isn't effective to use against them. Pony up real monies for the AA one or spend a bunch of hours grinding for it.

There's a single player/co-op wave based mode but nothing close to the old campaigns. And I'm assuming you should be able to play the other modes offline against AI? That's what I spent most of my time doing in the old Battlefront games anyways.

I think this is why I don't mind the unlock system in Battlefield 4 and Hardline. For most of the unlocks, they're sidegrades that suit different playstyles. And, for the most part, the starting weapons are perfectly capable (especially with the recent-ish Summer Patch that had a bunch of weapon tweaks).
| Origin/R*SC: Ein7919 | Battle.net: Erlkonig#1448 | XBL: Lexicanum | Steam: Der Erlkönig (the umlaut is important) |
Unlocks for sidegrades are okay. And they also serve to slowly introduce things so you aren't overwhelmed by choices, and it encourages trying everything out.
I love how fast it is. How I don't have to reload. The active reload minigame to practically instantly vent overheated weapons is great. It's so quick, you have to be ready for it, and if you fuck up, the venting takes like double as long. I love how the minimap doesn't give away exact positions anymore, but rather points in the general direction of hostile noises, like sprinting footsteps and blasterfire - which makes flanking feel a bit like The Last of Us multiplayer sneaking. I love how the shooting feels in general. It reminds me of BF:BC 2 Vietnam, which was also rather hip fire friendly. I love that gadgets like grenades and the jetpack are on a cooldown, rather than finite.
Battlefront simply feels like more of a videogame ass videogame. To always have my abilities at the ready like that, and not slowly become power and optionless over time. Give me all the Star Wars powers all the time - it's the best!
Oh, did I mention that it looks absolutely stunning? The best looking game on PS4 bar none. Runs smooth as butter as well. And the sound and music man! Best in the industry directional feedback, with the most oompf ever, coupled with Star Wars music and iconic effects - pure eargasms constantly.
Grinning like a madman right now! And I only played Drop Zone thus far. The big bad 40-player mode is bound to please me even more deeply.
P.S. PM oddspeed if you want a PSN code for the beta right now, and get in a little early. He or she still has a couple of codes to give away.
You guys are making me extremely pissed off that I am stuck in an Extended Stay America hotel with 0.5mb/s wireless internet for the next week and a half.
I could start pre-loading and by the time the game downloaded the beta would be over.

There's 3 singleplayer modes, as far as I can tell from the menus in the beta client. Coop missions can be played solo. There's also a mode which seems to be 1 player plus AI vs 1 player plus AI, respectively 1 player plus AI vs All AI, though I don't know what exactly the further circumstances are. Can't remember the 3rd thing off the top of my head.

I guess my question was really asking if there was going to be SP vs AI in the final game; I can understand that the Beta is going to be (mostly) Multiplayer only. Thanks for giving me hope, @BranniganSepp!
I still try to reload out of habit between fights.
I'm watching the Neebs Gaming twitch stream right now, and when the stream first loaded, that was the first thing I heard: "Hey Doraleous, do you keep trying to reload after each kill?" "Yup...trying to train myself not to"

The atmosphere in Walker Assault is spot-on. Too bad the average player is too gosh darn cowardly or stupid to know how to mount a proper defense as a Rebel. Only won once as Rebels. The first round I ever played it. Had like 10 obvious try hard BF veterans on my team, with the stones to push up and hold those damned uplinks.
That said, getting bumrushed by AT-ATs and AT-STs is so spot-on like the Empire Strikes Back, I can't complain too much. Eventually the playerbase will get there too.

Many thanks to @oddspeed for an early access PC key. Just hit rank 5. Game is pretty sweet. Love the visuals, the presentation, and the audio queues. Definitely looks and feels like a Star Wars game.
If I had any complaints, it's the unlocks and the way vehicles are picked up. I really wish they kept the class based system instead of having steady unlocks for perks and weapons. The DLT-19 is ridiculous, and you don't get it until you're max beta level for 2250 space bucks. The moment I stepped on Hoth the only thing I wanted to do was fly around in a Tie Fighter and shoot X-Wings down, but vehicles are extremely limited to only two or three at a time per side. Also the game really loves to toss the pickups for vehicles and heroes directly in front of a pushing line of enemies.
In any case, yeah it could have turned out better, but what they have here is pretty sweet. Playing the beta alone might make me want to pre-order, but I'd like to see how the finished product turns out first.
Also, there was barely any latency issues but I have a feeling tomorrow will be very, very different.
After a 5 hours session tonight, besides falling deeply in love with it, I also have some pet peeves.
It's still rather easy to get stuck on stuff on the ground (an FPS problem in general, but amplified because DICE builds organic maps), and not being able to easily go everywhere I feel I should be able to go. That's something I feel there's some creative coding effort that could be made in order to make it less prevalent, maybe even a non-issue (clearly not for Battlefront, but maybe next time). The jetpack helps a lot with that though.
DICE's Killer Cam always struck me as a half assed Kill Cam, and not like a valid design decision, because it clearly does the same job as a classic kill cam, but much more poorly. 50% of the time, I still don't know what the flippin' eff just went down. A proper kill cam is simply better at doing that job. Now that's something DICE should eventually put some manpower behind. Develop a proper kill cam, and make an effort to make it a better Kill Cam than the competition has. How about it?
Some of the HUD can be obstructive. I hate few things more than getting shot by a guy completely covered up by some objective marker or something. HUD opticacy adjustments would be a nice option to have. I don't expect BF4 levels of HUD/UI customization (it would be nice), but that's the least I expect now, after being spoiled by BF4. I only saw options to turn various parts of the HUD and UI off completely.

I really dislike the HUD in this game
I'm all about minimalism in UI design but this thing straight up looks like placeholder art, like it has been left unfinished
When everything else about the game's presentation is pitch perfect, the UI being completely bland and characterless is a strange turn
(I'm also not a big fan of the zoom feature not being through an actual scope but just zooming in the camera like it's the pistol from Halo 1 but that's just me)

ADS is in the game for guns with optical sights. Dunno if it's in 3rd person though.
I have found I'm doing better when playing 1st person all the time. I'm just that tad bit more accurate, and quicker with proper target acquisition. As always, the gamepad-only world of consoles seems to have the upper hand when it comes to *fun balance*. On PC, with KB&M controls being the norm, 3rd person seems to rule supreme, because the interface devices themselves provide all the accuracy and speed you need, even in 3rd person.
DICE purposefully makes their killcam that way, they don't want it to be immediately too informative, which I agree to. Unless you mean like showing a replay of what happened, then I think it's not going to happen. There's a whole lot more things going on in a Battlefront match than in a COD/CS:GO match, so I don't think it would be too easy to have a nice accurate replay of everything every few seconds.

I don't buy it. Not anymore. Back in the Bad Company days, without excessive automatic 2D audio spotting, sure, why not - but these days, when anything you do makes you show up on the minimap automatically? I call bullshit on it.
I believe a lot of the grief DICE has gotten over BF4's netcode could have been mitigated by a really good kill cam. Events like one frame deaths aren't always netcode related shortcomings. With 64 players, respectively 40 players on the field, often multiple players open up on you at the same time. A kill cam specifically designed for large playercount games like Battlefield and Battlefront makes tremendous sense. It curbs the perceived bullshit events, increases clarity and understanding, reduces frustration and anger, and is generally making the whole dying experience less aggravating. Few things get human beings as rilled up as feeling confused and/or cheated.
DICE's trademark Killer Cam very frequently fails to show what happend when I died, but it often also gives away what the player is up to after killing me. That's information I don't think a post-death cam should really give away.

That's what I think too. It would be a huge challenge to code a really good kill cam for Battlefield or Battlefront, that accounts for all sources of damage, and accurately represents what happend in the moments leading up to one's death - and that's the true reason why the Killer Cam exists. It's really hard to get a kill cam done right in the context of a high playercount DICE game. That said, I think it's time for DICE to put in the effort, and code something better than its current Killer Cam. If not for the upcoming Battlefront, then for a future iteration of Battlefront or Battlefield. A proper purposeful fully realized kill cam.
Google tells me it drops at 1pm. Just in time for me to leave for work. I'm going to have a hard time paying attention as I refresh this thread for impressions.
Just for shits and giggles, I'm gonna see what this does to my PC (Athlon II X3 440 3.0 GHz, 12 MB RAM, Radeon HD 5770 1 GB)
...Jesus, it'd probably be cheaper to buy an Xbox One...
If you're actually in the market for a console there's some great bundles coming out and I think the XBO is starting to really come into it's own. Backwards compatibility is pretty awesome and their games for gold program has gotten pretty great. Plus if you invested in all in the Rockband platform on the 360, it's almost a must buy. I got RB4 just because of the dent DLC put on my wallet, it only made sense!

Some of the defender spawnpoints on Walker Assault are messed up. If an attacker pushes up hard, there's the possibility to get into turrets behind enemy lines, with unobstructed line of sight on multiple spawn points in the first leg of the Assault. I've been on multiple 20+ killstreaks just from getting there, and shooting the rebelous villains in the back like a boss.
Defender spawns are pretty shitty in general. There's always two objectives/lanes to protect, but 90% of all spawns on leg 2 and to a lesser extent on leg 3 happen next to only one of the two objectives, making it practically impossible to hold the other one. With the current anti-vehicle tools available, defenders need to practically flawlessly hold the Y-Wing beacons to have a shot at winning. That's some old bullshit, because it's only so hard to hold both beacons because of one-sided spawning. Why not let the player decided on which lane he wants to spawn? So I can go where I'm needed the most.
Also, for the love of all that is good. Equip Ion-Ammo Buff and Ion-Grenades to damage the Walkers. An Ion-Grenade does tons of damage to vehicles. It's the only reliable weapon currently available to deal with AT-STs, and boosts the damage output against AT-ATs tremendously.
Posted this in the Transformers thread, but for a general PSA for PC gamers, the Nvidia drivers for the Battlefront Beta tanked my performance in Transformers somehow, so just a heads up. Might just be that game, might affect others for all I know too. So if you see games behaving oddly, you might want to mess with the drivers.
