Anyone else think the only reason it's free at all is because of how much the PC community has collapsed in on itself and how cold the reception has been to the game (and the planned DLC in particular)?
The reception is such a bummer to me because I feel like a big AAA shooter has finally been tailor-made for me and the rest of the world apparently thinks it's the worst thing ever.
I play all the modes regularly. Granted I'm on consoles, and I know the PC version has its own set of population issues, but after Titanfall I pretty much saw that coming.
The weird thing about that video is that it mentions new costumes for Luke and Leia, but Luke and Han were mentioned in the tease, along with Hoth. That led me to think more costumes, but I guess it could be a Tauntaun.
The whole "casual" thing is interesting to me because, as someone who has played a lot of Battlefield, I find Battlefront a lot harder place to accomplish objectives and feel like I am "doing" something other than randomly shooting and getting shot by dudes. Part of this is because BF4, by being less casual, has a lot of tools and toys that let you play smart and make big splashes. You aren't going to blow up an AT-ST and six surrounding storm troopers with a lucky missile strike in Battlefront.
But mostly I believe its a symptom that game design has kind of lost the plot when it comes to multiplayer. There's this small, dedicated base of people who have deeply ingrained the principles of modern multiplayer (I'm one of them), and the game companies have hone their arts creating tight experiences for that minority.
Now, they can't seem to design a game that allows anyone outside that minority to have much fun. Even the menu system is arcane if you aren't versed in the modern multiplayer. Star Wars Battlefront is meant to be a casual, light shooter for the masses, but my bet is that the majority of players picked it up, died a dozen times in the first dozen minutes, then put it down forever.

I'm very casual when it comes to playing shooters and I almost quit after the first 30 minutes. But I did start playing after Christmas, so that didn't help.

I don't really get the talk of the "majority" or whatever. If you're only referring to PC, where the majority of people just plays mobas and CS until they die, then I can see that, but the playercount and reception on consoles is really good. I usually play games on PC if I can help it but given how shooters that aren't CS tend to end up, I went with PS4 instead and I'm glad I did. People get to talking on message boards and they think that because they agree with one another they're the majority, but their numbers are dwarfed by gamers who don't spend their time on message boards.
I will say that I actually enjoy Battlefront more than other shooters that I've played. Call of Duty/Battlefield only last me a few days of "enjoyment" (usually screaming because fuck witches and shotguns). This game is keeping my attention on the PS4 because I don't always feel like I'm getting curbstomped by bullshit (other than the DL-44).

I generally find it more entertaining than other shooters online. It just engages me to be able to play it on and off every now and again and not feel like ive lost days of progress if I haven't played it for a night.
I do feel though issues have come from the team expecting casual players to not be bothered to find out all these OP exploits.
I'll throw in my two cents, and say I'm incredibly mediocre at online shooters. I've played Black Ops 3 and Destiny and Titanfall, and a good match for me is clawing my way into the top half of the team.
With Battlefront I just annihilate people. I can get 7 or 8 kills in a life when I get going, and I've even placed top of my team a few times. I also only just got it for Christmas. I don't know what it is, but I excel at this game.
The reception is such a bummer to me because I feel like a big AAA shooter has finally been tailor-made for me and the rest of the world apparently thinks it's the worst thing ever.

The reception is terrible because the matchmaking is terrible, and that is a MUST if you want a good multiplayer shooter. I've been in games that through a series of maps had the grouping go from 10 v 10 to 8 v 3 at the end... and no sign of the game even TRYING to balance it at all. The balance and matchmaking for the game as a whole some of the absolute worst I've seen, and on a multiplayer-only game... that is the kiss of death.
Yep. Aside from having no hint of skill-based matchmaking at all (I've been in games where the top player on one team finished with 65 kills and the top player on the other had 25), the game straight up does not care about even keeping the teams numerically equal. If new people join the server it will put them on the shorthanded team, but if people drop out and no new blood shows up it will never shuffle the teams to keep them even.

Kill counts are less an indication of skill and more an indication of who picks up what power-ups. Boba Fett, AT-AT, AT-ST pickups are all items than can net you dozens of kills. Going 65-0 with Fett is not that uncommon. Getting 65 kills if you managed various AT pickups is also not unheard of.
Fighter squadron is about waiting till you are rebels and then curb stomping for power levels, walker assault is about waiting till you are imperials and then power leveling... both are also for KDR padding.

Speaking of Fighter Squadron, fuck you if you get in Slave 1 and then crash on purpose because I'm about to blow you out of the sky.

I think the biggest issue with the PC release is just the perceived value versus the cost. It's a $120 ish dollar game to start with, that wasn't well reviewed, and that isn't well populated. If you compare the features of the 2015 version to the 2005 version, it's just a wasteland of nothing on the 2015 side. In addition, the game isn't coming to Steam as I understand, so it's not going to be on the casual marketplace for a lot of PC players (and less likely to hit a juicy sale on the Origin store. A hefty sale would help with the perceived value as well as inject more players).
This is my conclusion as someone who was just casually interested in the game to start. I played the beta, found a pared down multiplayer only shooter, and just wasn't super interested. Then the price hit. Full price for multiplayer only? Tough sell. Double the price for "Season pass" when the game didn't come with enough maps to begin with? That's just laughable.

I have issues with people getting the heroic ships for that very reason. Truthfully the Falcon and Slave should be battling to the death while everyone else does things to win the match. I find the heroic ships too OP, and the only way to take one down outside dying too often to succeed is to let both beat each other to death.
I stay away from the heroic ships because I haven't a clue how to use them, and don't want to fight for who gets it. But if an idiot gets it, you're gonna lose... because no one else can kill the heroic ship without giving the other team half the game. That and people not going for the goals in game and concentrating on kill counts should be punched in the crotch.

I love Star Wars, but come on.
I have a follow up question that I've been thinking over the last few days, because I'm admittedly a fan of the game and haven't had many of the complaints that a lot of people seem to have.
What content would the season pass need to present in order to 1) worth (admittedly subjective) the $50 cost, and 2) have the game become an unqualified recommendation? There are several games, like Destiny, that have launched with a content drought and have been able to turn it around (which is totally not cool but the end result is a better game). Does Star Wars qualify as the type of game that could do that? Does the addition of free content beyond the season pass help with the game's perception? Is it a matter of the time it takes to put out new content?
Would it take an entire single player campaign? 20 maps? 50 maps? Do they need to put all of it out at once? I'm genuinely not being snarky, I'm just curious as to what the majority of people believe needs to happen.
I know that a server browser on PC seems to be at the top of that list, for starters.
Quick update: For what it's worth, a DICE employee recently tweeted that the January update was ready before Christmas. It's a hold-up by the platform holders, not the developer.

If that is true then DICE must be grinding their teeth over it. I'm sure a fair number of people got this game for Christmas and for many the first impression is not as good as it could have been.
I am not sure why there would be a holdup because of the "platform holders" for the PC version though, since the game can only be played through Origin, which EA owns. What's stopping them from just pushing the update out? But I guess it would have been unacceptable to affront the console players by having the PC version get anything first.

as a formerly dedicated BF4 player, who thought this would be fun casual star wars shooting, i think this is is truth. i have played a couple hours on PC and really only died repeatedly not knowing if i was contributing at all.
I just need to level up enough to unlock enough that I can try and have a tank build like I had on MW2. I suck at killing, but I was pretty good at grabbing objectives and regularly one of the top scorers on my team. Currently I just suck at killing in BF.
Had some glitches in HvV last night. At one point I was supposed to be Han, but it showed me as a Rebel soldier, when I died it switched to Han surrendering. Later Luke spazzed out and was twitching and instead of facing forward he was turned to the right.
Sounds like a patch tomorrow, yes. At least from what I can parse from twitter replies and the neogaf thread. I suppose I could be wrong, but DICE employees have been hinting at it for a while.
Can someone explain to be the attraction of tauntauns besides, "OMG STAR WARS!"?
It seems like you'd just be running around faster (in what already is pretty fast paced game), while being a hilarious large target.
Meat shield.
Joking (?) aside, if it raises your hitpoints, that does seem advantageous. Presumably you'll be able to shoot from it, even if that never happened in the films.
There will be a hilarious "fart" button. You'll run a tauntaun into the middle of a bunch of people, hit the button, and everyone passes out. Comes with a special "I thought they smelled bad on the outside" emote.

To me it's more of an immersion thing. Tauntauns were a big part of the Rebel forces in Empire Strikes Back, and to see them strangely absent from an almost one to one recreation of Hoth breaks that a bit. It's just another small thing they could add to help trick my brain into forgetting about real life while I'm trying to blast people.
Now if it's 100% cons gameplay wise I'd be disappointed, but at least I'd be able to see them being used in battle.

I suppose that's reasonable, but I think the "immersion" factor works both ways: we never see the tauntaun cavalry because I'm pretty sure it doesn't exist. It certainly wasn't in the films. They'd be lousy creatures to use in actual combat from what we see, there's just generally adequate for getting around by yourself in a noncombat situation because nothing better (like speeders) is available right then.
I don't disagree at all with the value of immersion, but that honestly seems more immersion breaking to me. It's sort of like, "Why don't we see the medical droid? It's in the films, it helps save Luke." Yes, it helped save Luke surrounded by equipment in a military hospital--in actual combat though? Maybe less great. Seeing the fragile robot ducking in a corner with explosions and blaster fire all around it, or a tauntaun and its rider weaving in an out of fire before it gets shot to pieces like the 4-meter-tall target it is, might break immersion more than improve it.
(On the other hand, I think the old Battlefront games had both, which were cases of a useful game mechanic--a healing area and another means of fast transport--was more valued than its breaking immersion.)
So the update today is apparently patch details and release timing for the January update, which will be before the end of January (as noted on the official forums). Not sure if that means the teased Hoth stuff is part of the big January update, or a separate thing that will get shoved out today.
Below are the patch notes specific to PlayStation 4, PC, and Xbox One for the January update.
