Chu nodded, "Your thoughts mirror my own. There's a deeper game being played here. It is one reason why I have called for a search of the palace and much of the city itself. Neither the good captain or myself want any more surprises." He waved one hand over to where Captain Zhang had stood since escorting the three Wulin heroes into the Magistrates presence.

However the captain no longer stood there. He'd quietly moved back to the main doors some few minutes and was conferring with a messenger standing in the barely-open doorway. The man handed three message scrolls to Captain Zhang and ducked back into the corridor outside hastily.

Zhang unrolled and began reading one of the scrolls. He read through each message quickly and without a word. Once finished, he strode across the court and laid every scroll before Magistrate Chu. "The messenger brought news and reports, some concerning the day's excitement, Magistrate." Captain Zhang said as he held the last scroll and offered it to Magistrate Chu.

Magistrate Chu took the proffered scroll and unrolled it carefully. He barely glanced at it before dropping it to his lap, "All of you, leave this court. Except you Captain, and you three. Scribe Chen, you stay as well." He indicated Fox, Mountain, and Silk. His advisors and the other court officials stood around looking at each other for a moment, all looked confused. "Did I not make myself clear? Leave!" Magistrate Chu barked in annoyance. As his court slowly filed out in confusion, Chu read through each scroll in turn. When he had finished, he worked his mouth as if to spit. Instead, he glared at the few stragglers yet to pass through the wide doors at the far end of the court chamber.

Once the court cleared and the double doors shut, Magistrate Chu looked at Violet Fox, "It seems the rumors you mention fall far short of the truth, Violet Fox." He tapped one scroll laid before him, "This message has come from the NorthWest. The original report is dated nearly two months ago. An army, allegiance and numbers unknown, has smashed through all defenders before them and is aimed at Seven Roads, though I surmise the Imperial City this invader's true goal."

Thirsty Mountain scowled. “How is it that this has remained unknown for so long? With two months march, they could be at our doorstep at any moment!”

Silk nodded in agreement to Mountain. "If today's festivities were at all linked to the advance of this army, it is almost certain they are getting close."

"Dire news, Lord," said Violet Fox, bowing. "I hope that the Emperor sends aid as quickly as possible. Seven Roads is not equipped or trained properly to repel an organized foe..."

Shen, forgetting himself, snorted. “If the magistrate has only just learned of this threat, then it is possible that word has not yet reached the Emperor. But even if he gave word to march against these invaders today, the Emperor’s army would require many days to marshall soldiers and prepare supplies. Seven Roads could well be a smoldering ruin before any help arrives.”

“Is there some way in which we could delay the enemy?”

The Magistrate smiled, "Our thoughts follow the same river, Thirsty Mountain." Magistrate Chu said, "Messengers will be dispatched to the Emperor within the hour."

Chu turned to Captain Zhang, "Captain, the city must be warned and preparations made. Proceed as we've discussed." Captain Zhang bowed, "By your leave, Magistrate." and left the court.

"As for you three. I have a request for each of you. I will be sending official letters, of course, but I would ask the three of you to speak with your superiors in your Orders. I have long urged for greater ties between Shen Zhou and Jinag Hu. It is clear to me, especially in light of this news, that we all must stand together as one."

He looked at Thirsty Mountain, "I don't know how an enemy has breached our borders so deeply undetected. They might have been targeting messengers or had help from traitors within Tian Xia.." The magistrate leaned forward, "But I will say this. This enemy will not go deeper into the Kingdom of Heaven while I draw breath. I have plans that will, I hope, slow or stop this enemy's advance."

"Please return when you have spoken with your individual societies. My Scribe will have another task for you by then. Unless anyone has more they wish to say, please leave. I have many messages to draft."

"As you say," Violet Fox bowed deeply and took her leave from the magistrate's chamber. She did not wait or check to see if the others were following - she was certain they were.

"Strange circumstances. From a quiet afternoon to whispers of war. I will retire to the Phoenixes and inform White Sparrow of what's been said today," she said, brushing a stray lock of hair behind an ear. She looked to Silver Silk. "Do you have a place to stay in town for the next few evenings? If you do not have arrangements made we would be happy to host you while the Magistrate is in deliberation."

“Oh ho! Master Silk has made a strong impression,” Thirsty Mountain guffawed as the trio left the audience chamber. Composing himself, he continued: “I will head to the Eagle Talons chapter house and report in.” A twinkle appeared in the big man’s eyes. “Don’t worry, Fox – I won’t tell Soaring Hawk that you have invited another man to stay with you. I love an honour duel as much as the next man, but there’s important work to be done and no time for distractions.”

"Truly, though - the ladies of the Society are pillars of grace and dignity. See that you behave yourself, Silk." He bowed to his companions and took his leave, grinning.

The three heroes left the magistrates palace. Outside, repairs and cleanup efforts were still under way. Captain Zhang stood nearby, speaking to his troops. He looked up, acknowledging the presence of the Wulin fighters before turning his attention back to his men.

    Thirsty Mountain Shen

Leaving the Magistrate's Palace with the other three, Shen soon split off as the trio passed near the headquarters of the Eagle Talons. The Eagle Talons had purchased a medium sized manor house with a small courtyard and a wall surrounding it, and made it their home in Seven Roads. Shen looked over the building and saw no damage from the day's attacks. As if any mere bandits would dare test the Eagle Talons.

Still, two guards stood outside the wall. Both smiled at him and one spoke, "Ah, finally crawled out of your bottle have you? Most excellent timing, because of you my money pouch hangs a little lower!" He laughed and pushed open the gate for Thirsty Mountain, "Come in, Soaring Eagle has asked to speak with you." The guard stepped into the courtyard after Shen and escorted him to the chambers of Soaring Eagle, the man knocked on the closed door. He pushed open the door at the cry of "Enter!" and stepped inside. "Thirsty Mountain Shen is here to see you sir." Shen heard the guard say but Soaring Eagles response was muffled. The guard stepped back outside and turned to Shen, "He will see you now. If you'll excuse me Shen, I must go collect my winnings." He bowed and turned away, whistling merrily as he went.

Thirsty Mountain Shen entered the room. Soaring Eagle sat with the setting sun behind him, using the waning light to read a scroll. Soaring Eagle said distractedly, still reading the scroll, "Close the door." The Eagle Talon commander took a drink of wine from the cup beside him and spoke "Shen, good to see you back. How did your mission go, escorting that shipment of goods for Lao Chen?" Soaring Eagle put down the scroll and looked directly at Thirsty Mountain, "And tell me why the honored magistrate demanded your presence. If you please."

    Violet Fox

Once Shen split off, Violet Fox led the way to the Resplendent Phoenix Compound. Once in sight of the compound, Violet Fox saw that it had remained untouched by bandits or fire, still as it was when she left earlier. However, the gates were closed. Violet Fox could think of very few times when any of the Mothers ordered the gates shut. As Fox and Silk strode towards the phoenix gates they swung open. Inside, the courtyard was empty save for one woman practicing her calligraphy. She looked up and smiled at Violet Fox, "White Sparrow asked that you see her in the library once you returned, Sister." When she reached the library with Silver Silk in tow, Violet Fox was greeted by both White Sparrow and Dancing Wind seated around a table in the center of the library. The door slammed behind her and she turned to see Smiling Cat with her hand on the closed door.

"We have much to talk about, Daughter. But first, we need to see to our guest. It wouldn't do to be inhospitable hosts." White Sparrow said, and tugged on a rope hanging over the table. Shortly after, the library door opened and Ping stepped inside, she said, "You called for me?" White Sparrow smiled, "Yes my child." Smiling Cat spoke, cutting off White Sparrow, "See to this man's needs. Make him comfortable and treat him as a guest. Leave us and show him to our guest quarters." "uhm, Yes. If you would follow me please." She said to Silver Silk. Smiling Cat closed the door as soon as Silver Silk was through.

White Sparrow indicated the empty seat beside her, "Have a seat my child. Would you like some tea? As I said, we have many things to discuss. Malignant Viper's return and an attack by Fire Doctrine cultists? These two events cannot be unrelated." As White Sparrow talked, Smiling Cat moved across the room, taking a seat between White Sparrow and Dancing Wind. As White Sparrow finished, Cat spoke up, "What did the magistrate want?"

    Silver Silk

Ping led Silver Silk to another wing of the house, "These are the guest rooms, please pick anyone you like. They are all well furnished and very comfortable." She blushed and looked at her feet, "Is there anything else you need? Any way I be of service?"

    Jade Needle Zhu

Having recently come to Seven Roads, Zhu Guiren, also known as Jade Needle among the Wulin, was taking advantage of the recent bandit attacks to ply his trade as a wondering Yīshēng. Having set himself up in a major ally near a side market, close enough to the recent action that foot traffic was still significant but far enough to avoid dealing with any repair workers or questions from the city guards. His newest patient was a merchant named Lao Chen, the premier merchant in the city to hear him tell it. Chen was needing treatment for burns on his left arm and left leg, "Ow, would you be careful? That hurts! Are you a doctor or a baker?"

A beggar in filthy clothes pushed through the crowd to approach Chen and Jade Needle, falling to his knees in front of both men, "Please sirs, some coin for a man with no luck? Just enough to fill my aching belly, please." He grabbed at Jade Needle's hands and crowded close to Lao Chen.

"Get lost, you beggar. You stink ... and look, you got filth on my clothes, now I'll have to get these cleaned!" Lao Chen pushed the beggar away. "Not too bad, all things considered." He said, flexing his bandaged arm. "What do I owe you?"

After Chen left, Jade Needle looked at the note the beggar had pushed into his hand. The note read: "Down on my luck, please help. Come inquire in the ally behind Li's produce cart - your humble Beggar"

This is a classy town – even the beggars have calling cards!

Thirsty Mountain Shen eyed the cup of wine for a moment before focusing on the task at hand. He saluted and then adopted a mostly-relaxed pose, meeting his leader’s gaze evenly.

“Thank you, Commander,” he said. “The escort mission went off without a hitch. We had word that bandits were in the area, but they must have heard that the Eagle Talons were on the job, because no one harassed us. We arrived a few hours ahead of schedule, which seemed to please Lao Chen well enough.”

Shen grasped his huge hands behind his back. “As for the magistrate, sir: no doubt you are aware that some Fire Doctrine dogs launched a raid this afternoon. Being cowards they of course stayed well clear of our compound, but they managed to do significant damage elsewhere.”

“As it so happens, I was, er, in the vicinity of the Crescent Moon Tea House when the trouble began. Naturally I could not stand idly by while evil men terrorized the weak, so I stepped in. I was not alone: there was a Liquid Metal Judge, and a Scholar from out of town. Oh, and of course Violet Fox as well. She was a bit late, having apparently been delayed defending White Sparrow from an assassin,” he added breezily, relishing the look of shocked concern that flashed in his commander’s eyes. Still, Soaring Eagle did a commendable job of maintaining his composure. Shen let him stew for just a moment before continuing. “I am told that the assassin was no match for Fox’s gongfu and soon beat a retreat.”

“At any rate, we drove the bandits off, and this earned us the attentions of His Excellency. He fears that the attack may have been more than a simple raid – apparently a large army has been rampaging across the land for some weeks now, though word has only just reached Seven Roads. The magistrate wonders if today’s attack is related to these reports and hopes that we can learn more about this threat and perhaps find some way of slowing or diverting the enemy – whoever they are – before they reach Seven Roads.”

Violet Fox nodded and spread her hands. "I will speak plainly, mothers; please forgive me this breach of etiquette. We stand on the precipice of war to hear the Magistrate tell it. He revealed reports of barbarian armies breaching the borders of Shen Zhou with the intent of going through Seven Roads on its way to the capital."

The shocked expressions on the masters' faces did not give Fox pause.

"I find it hard to believe that a man as cunning and powerful as Magistrate Shu would not have received word sooner of such an event, though it is not my place to question such things." Her tone conveyed that she was indeed casting doubt and the mothers nodded.

"The Magistrate wishes stronger ties between his office and the Jiang Hu."

Jade Needle Zhu wandered into the alley behind Li's produce cart.

Closing shop had been more difficult than he expected. First there were the burn victims. Then the stabbing victims. Then the clubbing victims. Then the trampling victims. A woman had gone into labor as well.

But the skill of Jade Needle Zhu was not to be denied. And so his patients were sent on their way. Rubbing salve onto their burns, trying not to disturb herbal balms and bandages, scratching needle marks or walking stiffly with braces. A cart had to be called for the children, the recovering mother and the father. The mother would would be up and about in a few days. The father of unexpected quadruplets would take longer to recover.

Finally Zhu had to refer patients to One Claw. The line had been stretching around the block and without sending the patients away he would never get away from work. Zhu was not worried about the damage to his reputation. He figured that the patients he had helped would spread tales of his skill.

Having brought lunch and supplemented it with some produce from Li's cart, Zhu sat down to eat in the alley. Settling himself on a convenient crate Zhu started to ponder his situation. Zhu's thoughts reflected the gravity of his situation.

"Why would a fellow member of the Fraternity contact me like that? And what is so urgent that he needs me to get in touch with him right away?"

"Oh well, I am sure it is nothing that I cannot handle. Or at least cannot handle with the help of some of the local Jiang Hu members. That's the way these things always go. Get into trouble for some random reason, gather a group of unlikely heroes together, make lifelong friends and defeat a great evil and become famous."

Acutely aware of the deep rumbling emanating from his gut, Silver Silk hurriedly responded "If it's not too much to ask, some food would be lovely. Nothing fancy, just whatever is available. I feel that I'm starting to forget what eating feels like."

    Silver Silk

"Oh! Of course, follow me. I can get some food for you from the kitchen." Ping lead the way and soon Silver Silk had a plate of dried fruit with chilled wine to wash it down. "I'm sorry" Ping said, "This is all I could get this late. "

"So you're a wandering priest? What's it like? What do you do? What made you take up that life?" She stopped and blushed, "I'm sorry. I'm asking too many questions, aren't I? It's just so rare that I get to talk with people not of the Socitie. "

    Violet Fox

The three mothers took Violet Fox's words calmly, though Smiling Cat clenched one fist as Violet Fox finished telling her tale. "What makes you think the magistrate was aware of this invasion?" White Sparrow asked her. "I too am interested in your reasons." Dancing Wind said, "Magistrate Chu urging for greater ties to the Jiang Hu is nothing new. He's advocated that for years. Why he keeps pushing for this is not known. The good magistrate has long kept his own counsel." Smiling Cat snorted, "And kept it well he has. One wonders if even he knows all his plans and desires." She drummed the fingers of one hand against the table, "But whatever his goals, this invasion forces us to act now. Not after endless debate." She said while glancing at Dancing Wind.

White Sparrow nodded, "Yes. Violet Fox, please go back to the Magistrate's Palace tomorrow. I am curious as to what further task he would request of you and your companions. The three of us shall decide how the Society here in Seven Roads shall act. Our first move must be to send news of this invasion across the kingdom."

    Jade Needle Zhu

"I think there's some soy sauce in the trash bin behind you, Jade Needle." The same beggar from before said as he came around the corner at the end of the ally. His clothes and face were as dirty as before, but his eyes were bright with an intelligence he'd kept hidden until now. "We have little time brother. Eat your meal while I fill you in." He sat on the cobbled ground, "You know about the attacks today, yes? Fire Doctrine dogs trying to stir up trouble. But what I'm sure you don't know is that Tian Xia faces an invading army." He smiled at Jade Needle, "Yes indeed. An army has breached our borders to the west. Or is the north? North-West?" He nodded, "Yes, they came from the north-west."

He smiled, "But what's really big news is that the leaders of one of the Four Pillars or the Four Great Societies has largely turned against the Emperor and is working with these invaders. The Fraternity doesn't know which yet, but we're working on it. And that's where you come in." He grinned, "The magistrate called three Wulin fighters to his court this afternoon. Violet Fox Zhi Hu, Silver Silk Gu Wen, and Thirsty Mountain Shen; do you know them? All three were involved in the attacks today in one way or another and the good Magistrate wanted to get their take on the day's excitement. He's got another job for them tomorrow too. And it's one that could need the services of a good fighter and healer, if you take my meaning."

"I want you to meet the three of them at the Magistrate's Palace tomorrow morning. Tell them that the Magistrate asked for you to join them. The Court Scribe will back up your story."

    Thirsty Mountain

"What?! An Invasion? When? Where? How?" Soaring Eagle asked with wide eyed surprise before bringing himself under control. He grabbed his cup and drained it. He began to pour himself a new cupful before pausing and looking at Thirsty Mountain. He pulled a second cup from a nearby cabinet and filled it full, offering the cup to Thirsty Mountain. "Sit. Share a drink with me. It's clear I have more work tonight left and I would ask your help."

"It's clear that runners need to be sent out tonight. The rest of the Eagle Talons need to know of this invasion. I would also think extending the aid of the Talon's, either to train troops or to go into combat directly, to the Captain of the Guard is in order." He drank from his cup, "If you have any suggestions or advice, speak up. Did the magistrate ask anything more of you?"

Thirsty Mountain accepted the cup and invitation to sit, filling the chair with his bulk and taking an exploratory sip of the wine. Soaring Eagle must indeed be concerned – he’d broken out the good stuff.

“I agree that runners must be dispatched, and immediately,” he said. “The Talons will need time to mobilize – which is also a point I made at the Magistrate’s Palace. If it is true that word of this invasion has not yet reached the Imperial City, then the situation is dire indeed, for it will take several weeks before the Army is ready to repel the invaders.” He took a long drink and set his empty cup on the desk before him. Soaring Eagle wordlessly poured him another, and Shen tapped two fingers on the table in thanks.

“Assisting the City Guard also sounds wise. Zhang seems a capable sort, but I doubt he’s dealt with anything like this before – but then, who has? At any rate, I expect he’ll be grateful for any help.”

Shen leaned back in his chair, idly swirling the wine in his cup. “As for the Magistrate: firstly, he asked that we return to our Orders and report the invasion; no doubt he wants to see the Jiang Hu involved in halting this invasion. He asked that I return to the palace tomorrow, along with Fox and Silver Silk. I believe he has some kind of mission for us. He may want to determine if the attack today was related to the invasion, or he may have conceived of some subtle way for us to delay or divert the enemy.” The big man chuckled as he swallowed some wine. “Though I can’t imagine why he’d ask me for help with anything requiring subtlety. I suppose we shall see.”

Thirsty Mountain now leaned forward again, his eyes serious. “Captain, I know it is not my place ... the Magistrate seems earnest enough in his desires to protect Seven Road and Tian Xia – but I cannot help feeling that he is ... maneuvering, even as this crisis looms. Perhaps it is just my mistrust of politicians, but something about him makes me uneasy.”

Soaring Eagle nodded thoughtfully and refilled both men’s cups. “I understand your concerns, Shen. We are men of action – when challenges arise, we meet them head on,” he said, bringing his fists together to illustrate the point. “Men like Chu approach problems in ways that can be as alien to us as the dark side of the moon. Nevertheless, in my dealings with him, the Magistrate has never given any indication that he is anything less than what he appears to be: a committed administrator – albeit an ambitious one. But that is hardly unusual for men of his station.”

Soaring Eagle made up his mind. “You will do as the Magistrate asks,” he said to Shen. “But if you observe anything in Chu’s instructions or actions which cause you concern, you will report these to me as quickly as possible.”

“For now, get some food and some rest. And a bath,” he added as an afterthought. “You smell like a bonfire.”

She paused before continuing. "I am suspicious. I do not know what his aims or motives are but I am distrustful of the magistrate. I do not think he is lying about the barbarians as there have been rumors floating on the winds from other travelers but..."

Silver Silk began stuffing his face as politely as possible.
"I guess you might call me something of a teacher."

    Silver Silk

Ping stood and bowed to Silver Silk, "Of course, I'll escort you back to your room." She saw him to his room and exited with a bow as she wished him a good night's rest.

The night passed uneventfully for Silver Silk and he woke with the morning sun.

    Violet Fox

White Sparrow took a sip of tea to hide her smile, "Of course. He is a student of the imperial court. Using external events to further one's own agenda is the first strategy learned." Dancing Wind nodded at Sparrow's words but seemed distracted. "True words Sister, Perhaps I should have accepted the Magistrate's offers to have tea with him" she said musingly.

Smiling Cat nearly spit out her tea and White Sparrow blinked once, surprised, "It seems we have more to discuss tonight then I'd thought." White Sparrow said, "Go now and rest my Daughter. Go to the magistrate's palace tomorrow and see what task he would ask of you."

    Jade Needle Zhu

Brother Shu smiled, "Indeed, you learn quickly, honored Doctor. You've perfectly guessed my instructions for you." He laughed, "But I'll leave you to your dinner. I'll be in touch through the usual means if our Brothers turn up any more interesting information." The beggar bowed low and was soon gone.

The next morning, Jade Needle arrived in the courtyard of the Magistrate's Palace bright and early. He met with the Scribe Chen, who saw him to a room and asked him to wait until the other three heroes had arrived.

    Thirsty Mountain

Soaring Eagle shared one last glass of wine with Thirsty Mountain before dismissing him. As Thirsty Mountain left, Soaring Eagle sent for lamp oil and more wine.

The next day dawned and Thirsty Mountain made his way to the Magistrate's Palace.

    All

As each of the three heroes arrived, they were directed to a small sitting room and provided with tea and refreshments.

Shortly after Thirsty Mountain, Silver Silk, and Violet Fox had all arrived and been seated, Chen the scribe came into the room. The Scribe bowed to the three heroes, "Good morning. The Magistrate bids you welcome and sends his apologies. Yesterday's news still commands his full attention. But I have his orders for you right here. The three of you are asked to ride out and follow the trail of the Fire Doctrine bandits. It's the belief of the Magistrate and the Captain of the Guards that the true reasons behind yesterday's attack must be known." Chen stepped outside and called Jade Needle into the room. Chen bowed to the Wulin Doctor, "Greetings Jade Needle. Welcome. Please allow me to introduce Jade Needle to you all. The Magistrate thought it wise to have a healer go with you and sent for him."

The scribe handed Thirsty Mountain a map of the surrounding area and a scroll declaring that its bearers were on a mission from a duly appointed Imperial Official and . "This scroll will allow you to borrow any of the horses from the magistrate's stables as well. I don't need to tell that time is of the essence. One more thing, the map has a marked location with the last location that the scouts reported the finding the trail of the bandits."

    "Any questions?"

Thirsty Mountain saluted Jade Needle, fist in palm. “I am Thirsty Mountain Shen,” he said to the doctor with a bow. “My teacher was Master Fong. I am honoured to meet you. Permit me to introduce my companions: Violet Fox of the Resplendent Phoenix Society, and Silver Silk, who is from ... elsewhere? Hmm.” The big man shrugged, then took a look at the map. “Seems simple enough,” he said after a moment. “We can collect some supplies on the way to the stables and then work on tracking down the bandits. I should like very much to get my hands on that craven dog Smoke Demon and finish what was started yesterday.”

Jade Needle Zhu returned Thirsty Mountain's salute and added as respectful semi-bow.

"I am honored to meet you as well. All of Seven Roads has heard of the inestimable courage and boundless thirst of Shen; the beauty, cunning, and skill of the Violet Fox and the ability of Silver Silk to wallop people across their noggins."

"I am Jade Needle Zhu, otherwise known as the Devil-Handed Cook"

Behind and slightly out of sight of Silver Silk, Violet Fox and Thirty Mountain, Chen rolled his eyes. Nobody knew Zhu as the Devil-Handed Cook. Zhu had been trying to get people to call him that for years, but since he was a better doctor than a cook, nobody called him that. As a member of the Beggars Fraternity, Zhu was reliable and loyal. As a Jiang Hu member, Zhu was forceful and a good martial artist. As a person, Zhu was known in the fraternity for being slightly nutty.

"I spent a lot of time yesterday patching up the wounds these brigands created. I would be honored to join you and educate them in precisely why banditry and raising invading armies is an unhealthy lifestyle."

Shen guffawed. “Ha! I like you, Devil-Handed Cook! You are most welcome in our company.” Leaning in and glancing over his should at Fox, he continued in a quieter voice. “Once we’ve dealt with the bandits, I would like to get your, uh, medical opinion on the, er, density of my skeleton.”

Violet Fox shook her head. Her ears were sharper than most. "Men," she said with a good-natured eye roll as she pulled the map from Shen's great paw. "Worry about the potency of your technique later," she remarked wryly as she unrolled it.

"Very peculiar. It is obvious that our enemies are working in concert but... if the invaders are using Smoke Demon's flame dogs as we suspect, why overplay their hand?"

Biting her lower lip in thought she re-rolled the scroll and placed it back in the canister. "Food for thought I suppose. Shall we go?"

Silver Silk turned to Fox. "Why do barbarians do anything?"

Gesturing towards Zhu, he adds "Thankfully a fellow educator has volunteered to come along with us to teach the thugs how to be properly civilized."

Chen beamed, "Excellent then. Allow me to escort you to the stables and see you on your journey." With the scribe tagging along, it was nearly no time at all before the four heroes had taken their pick of horses from the good magistrate's stables and riding away from Seven Roads.

They followed the bandit's trail for hours and soon the sun was hanging near the horizon as they rode through an ancient forest. The trees pressed close on either side of the road and the air sang with cries of birds.

The trees fell back from the road and the four heroes were riding through a large forest clearing. A brook bubbled over smooth stones, crossing the road near the center of the clearing. A man dressed all in black clothes with a single sword sheathed at his side stood on the other side of the brook, blocking the road. "Good evening. I'm Weeping Crane and I'm afraid this is as far as you go." At his words, arrows fall from the treetops, missing each of the heroes and their steeds by bare inches.

Thirsty Mountain Shen drew himself up on his belaboured horse, which seemed so grateful for a moment’s rest that it barely noticed the arrow sticking out of the ground by its head. The big man scowled and jabbed a thick finger at Weeping Crane. “Set down your arms and stand aside!” he shouted. “We are on Imperial business on behalf of the magistrate of Seven Roads. Let us pass, and this outrage will be forgotten. Stand in our way, and the consequences will be dire.”

"Now Shen, surely this fine gentleman has simply mistaken us for a band of wandering brigands and is simply doing his duty as a citizen by attempting to stop us."
Silver Silk dismounts and begins slowly walking towards Crane, bringing his staff along as a walking stick.
"A pleasure to meet you, Weeping Crane. I am Silver Silk. We are on a mission of peace and education on behalf of the Magistrate of Seven Roads. Will you please stand aside and allow us to continue?"

Jade Needle Zhu slides off his horse with an obvious look of relief.

"I am sure that any elements of mistaken identity can be cleared up over a nice hearty meal." Jade Needle walks closer to Weeping Crane along with Silver Silk, taking the side closer to the trees. Hidden in his sleeves and pouches and boots are his namesake needles.

He is really glad to not be riding anymore.

Fox raised a slim eyebrow at the volley of arrows that had been loosed. Scanning the tree tops for the hidden archer she knew it was only a matter of time before they were spotted and she could go on the offensive. For now, best to bide time and perhaps see where diplomacy would get her and her companions.

"Oh, on official business from the Magistrate." Weeping Crane, "And here I am obstructing your mission. How embarrassing."

He bowed and stepped to one side, "Please, don't let me distract you any longer. Be on your way."

Thirsty Mountain harrumphed. "Quite embarrassing - for you and your companions," he said, casting a suspicious glance into the trees. "It is fortunate that my companions were able to convince you of your error." With that the big man gave his mount a gentle nudge and the hapless beast started slowly forward, dragging one final mouthful of grass from the ground as it moved.

Jade Needle Zhu smiled and said "It is no problem. People get upset when they are hungry. Here have this"

And without pausing Jade Needle Zhu threw Weeping Crane a block of Deuk Deuk Tong.

"Thank you, Weeping Crane." Silver Silk said, completely turning his back to Crane as he meandered back to his horse.
