had this for months, never really getting into it. i would always go to the graveyard and start and wonder for ages why i was dying. this went on for a good few months on and off, playing 20 minutes here and there..

until yesterday i found out about going up to undead berg... i explored, leveled up, got some new weapons and armor slowly and painfully, trying to figure out what i was playing. i manage beat the terrifying first boss this morning, using those written clues as a vague guide. i played a bit more, opened up more paths and went back and got more awesome items and armour and then it hit me. ITS A GODDAMN METROIDVANIA!!! thats the game i am playing!

holy shit. holy shit im in serious trouble now. all my free time for the foreseeable future is gone. all kinds of productivity i was planning on, gone. just like that.

oh after i got to the
    dark gardens
and messed around in there for awhile, i went back and murdered those fucking skeletons in the graveyard, ALL OF THEM. then, thinking im some kind of walking badass motherfucker i go below to
    the flooded ruins
and go preeetty deep killing them
    ghosts
i racked up nearly 15k of souls and then died in the room
with 3 of the screeming ones with bones everywhere
so i go back down and
DIE HORRIBLY BEFORE I COULD RETRIEVE THEM.

i have been screaming and crying for HOURS.

Oh Yes, that is the spirit Deadinred. The moment I realised this game felt like Castlevania SOTN, in 3D and more difficult I got nerd chills all over.

I am so looking forward to watching a friend of mine play this for the first time this autumn.

Now don't give it to the jerk in Firelink.
Give it to the other jerk in the ruins after beating the Four Kings instead.
You'll have to beat Sif first if you haven't done that yet.

If you join Dickwraiths you get a cool looking sword, armor and shield/power thing, but you lose out on the ability to feed items to the other serpent guy for souls.

  • ArchsorcererArchsorcerer Registered User regular
The sword seems cool but appears to be average on stats. I just got a Silver Knight sword.

And I think the armor doesn't have curse resistance. I'm pursuing the paladin set right now.

BTW, Vaati has a new video on Shiva.

Only because it was dropped off of the first black knight you meet in undead berg. It took some grinding to use it, but I never stopped using it until NG+.

The invasion tactic just brings the dickishness out in people. Either it's super ganksquads in the Forest waiting to ambush newbies who are having their first PVP experience(through forest covenant), or it's twinks/griefers invading newbies in Parish or Burg with late-game gear to instakill people who don't stand any chance whatsoever.

PVP is only good once you get to the DLC content, since the griefer/twink/assholes aren't around any longer.
Well, sometimes you get lucky and get to PVP with an equivalently skilled/outfitted players in the Forest. But usually not so much.

It is really funny to get abuse from gankers when you manage to win through kicking them off a cliff or something, when by rights you had zero chance to kill them. Still, lately I've been running into a lot of people who backstab from the front, and soak damage in the thousands. It's getting a bit tiring.

It was better in Demon's when everyone got unlimited invasions right after the tutorial and you didn't need to twink to get into PvP covenants before endgame.

And the scumbag PC hackers are why I'm getting Dark Souls 2 on PS3.

Really, there's a couple things that could be easily fixed to mitigate any multiplayer issues. Making invasions available to everyone immediately alone would help a lot.

First, you have to be a complete dickhead griefer scum, then:
You have to get Covenant of Artorias from Sif, then beat the Four Kings and talk to Kaathe in the Abyss afterwards. You need to do this prior to placing the Lordvessel for Frampt, and place it for Kaathe instead. Talk to Kaathe again in the Abyss to join.

Bonus points for doing all this at a very low level for maximum noob griefing potential. /s

Do I just need 20k for the seal to unlock Sif's gate, pound him, then head to ghostland and then through drownytown, throatpunch the 4 kings and I'm gold?

To my understanding, yeah. That's about it.

    From Wikidot:
    1. Acquire the Covenant of Artorias.
    2. Talk to Ingward (if you have the Lordvessel) or kill him (can be done as early as you arrive at Firelink Shrine) to gain the Key to the Seal.
    3. Open the floodgate, then proceed to fight The Four Kings in The Abyss. You need to equip the Covenant of Artorias.
    4. Talk to Darkstalker Kaathe, say yes and he'll take you to Firelink Altar.
    5. You can do two things:
    - Put the Lordvessel at the altar, then talk to Kaathe to warp back to The Abyss. This will make Kingseeker Frampt leave for the current playthrough.
    - Use a Homeward Bone or Homeward back to The Abyss bonfire.
    6. Talk to Darkstalker Kaathe again, he'll offer you to join the covenant.

That's the gist of it, excepted for one point:
Getting the 20k souls for the seal isn't necessary: you can take the scenic route through the basin to reach Sif. If all depends of what you prefer, amassing 20k souls or fighting a hydra.

I thought the bridge to Sif's area also had a door that required the 20k sigil to unlock?

Is there some sort of map to find out where to go next or should I just look at a guide to see where to go? After the Burg I decided to go down past Firelink Shrine and got murdered by ghosts. I'm up to the depths and got cursed by those damn frogs, can't believe that guy that charged 6000 per curse removal.

You can really go anywhere you want at any time. There are a few gates tied to progression that can't be bypassed, but everything else can be. Primary objective though early game is to ring 2 bells, one above Firelink and one below.
Don't read ahead if you want to figure it out on your own.
Easiest bet to start is Burgh > Parish > Depths > Blighttown. That'll open the big gate by the smith in Parish, leading you to more "story" stuff. You can also head to the forest and the first part of the crypt in the graveyard at any time you want though.

If you don't have the Master Key, then the Depths are your next stop. The place is really easy _once you know the layout_. I would like to give you a McLargeHuge tip for that place, it's not a spoiler but it will make you not kick yourself later. If you don't want any help, don't click:
Directly after finishing the Depths you'll be led into a new area. It is an INCREDIBLY confusing and hostile place. You will NOT be given an easy way to go back out and restock your supplies after the Depths. So unless you want to run all the way back out to buy stuff and then all the way back in to get to the next area: take a shitload of supplies with into the Depths. I'm talking ammunition, consumables, status effect removal bits, the fucking works. Saying more would spoiler some stuff, but trust me on this. Go into the Depths loaded for bear.

Friendos, I cannot for the life of me get this game to work. I have tried port forwarding (every single one), I reset my TCP/IP, I altered my MTU, I reinstalled both the GFWL client AND Dark Souls... And now this cannot and will not run. I spent my entire Sunday trying to make this shit work.

    So.

I bought this during the Steam sale, because I love Monster Hunter, and this was recommended to me from some friends who also play MH and DS.

And, like in the tutorial, where you're expected to fight the giant demon in the middle of the courtyard. And I did the best I can, using what MH knowledge I have, but I just don't have the timing down and I have no idea how to beat it.

And I quit in frustration while swearing in Steam chat to one of my friends who suggested the game. And he's laughing at me. I threatened to uninstall the game out of anger BECAUSE I ALWAYS WIN FUCK YOU STUPID GAME.

I turned the computer off, and came back later or something. I went to go play it, and it turns out it uninstalled itself.

    Problem solved? I guess?
