Beat Anor Londo...then?
First, you have to be a complete dickhead griefer scum, then:
You have to get Covenant of Artorias from Sif, then beat the Four Kings and talk to Kaathe in the Abyss afterwards. You need to do this prior to placing the Lordvessel for Frampt, and place it for Kaathe instead. Talk to Kaathe again in the Abyss to join.
Bonus points for doing all this at a very low level for maximum noob griefing potential. /s
You also get the other half of the story.
Both sides are complete dickwads, just in different ways. It's like the SMT Law/Chaos split where neither is a 'good guy' path.
What other half is that? That some people disconnect when they get invaded, or the invader gets beaten by a three-man squad? Excuse me if I don't shed a tear for the poor dickhead whose pure intentions of ruining another player's fun did not bear fruit. Invader is being an active, initiating dickhead, while the invadee can be a reactive dickhead in response. One side bears a lot more of the fault.
But I'm permanently biased against invaders, don't mind me.
In unrelated news, I'd like to know if upgraded normal weapons ever get worth using? It seems that by Anor Londo everything's got a massive damage resistance to normal weapons, and even at +10 they do piddly damage. By comparison, when I played my INT-character, the magic claymore shredded everything. I'm not really seeing the worth in playing a dex/str character when an equivalent level int-character can two-shot enemies in melee when the normal weapons take half a dozen or more hits. Plus you get sorcery.
Only the black knight halberd does reasonable damage, everything else seems just pathetic. The halberd is a bit awkward to use much of the time though.
Woo! Beat the iron golem on the 2nd try. Question.. Is the caterina set worth buying? It's better then the elite knight set I have ATM. However the guy who is at the gate before sens is hostile because I hit him thinking it was a pot. Can I kill him and get the set or should I leave him be?

I hate a badly executed game mechanic that could've had promise, and how the vast majority of invaders are twinks and hackers and suck the fun out of what little could've been had with the PVP. I hope they have a lot more effective regulatory system in DS2, if not, I'll just have to figure out a way to ruin invasions for anyone who tries them with me.
Still, I've given the mechanic a fair shake, and I just don't see why people consider it such a significant part of the experience in any way. The few times it's resulted in a reasonably valid match(equipment-wise), the fights have been okay but not some spectacular experience for the ages. Usually it's just somebody twinked up to their eyeballs or a hacked character joining to stomp all over your progress 'for the lulz'. It's pretty obvious what was intended with the system, but it fails to live up to it. It's hardly half the game, at most 10% of the experience, if that, as far as I'd judge its importance. And it's been pretty much universally a bad 10% of the experience.
I've only invaded when I need humanity, or I want to advance in some covenant. I agree with Rhan, the system is nice but it's pretty much ruined by twinkers and hackers. (And backstabs)
I bought this during the Steam sale, because I love Monster Hunter, and this was recommended to me from some friends who also play MH and DS.
And, like in the tutorial, where you're expected to fight the giant demon in the middle of the courtyard. And I did the best I can, using what MH knowledge I have, but I just don't have the timing down and I have no idea how to beat it.
And I quit in frustration while swearing in Steam chat to one of my friends who suggested the game. And he's laughing at me. I threatened to uninstall the game out of anger BECAUSE I ALWAYS WIN FUCK YOU STUPID GAME.
I turned the computer off, and came back later or something. I went to go play it, and it turns out it uninstalled itself.
Problem solved? I guess?
Yeah, you do know you're not supposed to beat it the first time, right? There's a door to the left that you can run through; go there and you'll progress farther and actually get a decent weapon that will let you fight it without pulling your hair out...

PvP is great as long as it's between two ordinary players. When twinkers, hackers, etc get into the mix it quickly kills the appeal for everyone. I think it would help a lot if they really stamped out PvP twinking with the matchmaking mechanics of DS2 - it needs to take into account your character's real power with all factors included, not just level.

Sorry. I didn't mean to just come here and bitch. I don't mind dying, and I love roguelikes where death is a core feature of the gameplay, but something about this just pisses me off.
After dying a bunch, I did find the door, and made it through. And I got the bow and killed the guys at the top, and it looks like the only place to go is through a white portal and die repeatedly. There's a door to the side in another corridor, but it's locked or unopenable, leaving the only place to go is through the white portal to the death monster.
I'm not sure I'm doing this right. If you stand on the ledge, the monster smashes you with his mace, and you die. If you jump down, you lose most of your life, and he smashes you with his mace, and you die. If you shoot him in the face with the bow, you get smashed in the face with his mace, and you die.
I could not see any possible solution, especially when I have no health, I don't have any patterns figured out, and he can smash me with his mace and I die.
I dunno, I've played through all the covenants and had a thoroughly enjoyable time on both the invader and invadee side.
For anyone new to the game I can understand how it's a pain, but I've poured 500+ hours into this between PC and PS3 and I thoroughly love it.
Fighting invaders with my tried and trusted co-op companion for days on end has been a blast.

You can totally beat it the first time if you know what you're doing! but yeah, you're not meant to.
I find MH to be a ton harder than Dark Souls. @Hyperion: if you play a lot of MH then you'll have noticed that Dark Souls is a lot more forgiving in terms of when you can dodge (you can use it to cancel animations), and how far out of danger it takes you. Dark Souls also has a proper lock on system, where MH does not. So stick with it! If you can handle the online MH stuff, then you can play Dark Souls.
Unless you're terrible at MH and get carried by your friends all the time.

Wield your weapon two-handed and press R1/ Right bumper while falling to do the thrusting attack. It takes like a good bite of it. Then strafe and dodge the attacks. Staying behind the asylum is a good idea.

I'll have to admit, that when the system works, it's great fun. I did have a week or so last November, when I was rolling with the forest covenant, where there was plenty of good PVP. It seemed to involve almost entirely level appropriate and gear-appropriate pairings when I was invading, where the loss/win ratio was a reasonable 70/30 (because I'm probably worse than average). Still, fights took some time, damage seemed appropriate, and it was genuinely interesting to fight with people. I did end up losing more than winning, but many of the wins did feel like achievements. That's the last time I had fun in PVP in Dark Souls. Afterwards, it's been pretty much entirely just twinked out invincible invaders(I did join the Darkwraiths in order to get the Lore bits, but haven't done many invasions with them. I just pretended to be Santa near Xmas. My invader experience is thus limited).
If there was some sort of reasonable pairing of invaders and invadees, to make the matches at least possible to win for both sides, it'd be grand. The current system doesn't really elicit more of a reaction than annoyance and expectation of wasted time from me at this point however.

I'll be the first to say that maybe this game isn't for you. That's okay, it's not for everybody.
That said, the Asylum Demon (and greater asylum) is set up to teach you a few things:
First, it is there to teach you how to do a plunging attack, which is your friend and can be used again throughout the game.
Second, you learn about this attack through reading the message right before the fog door. The asylum is set up to let you know that messages can be informative, as well as teach you how to play the game.
Third, have you picked up the Estus flask yet? I kind of get the impression that you have not. If so, go back to where the knight was that you spoke with earlier.
Fourth, the boss teaches you that even if you think you're safe from a boss on a ledge, you're not so clever that they can't get to you. Remember this later.
Fifth, you are squisy and can die. More so when someone is swinging a hammer bigger than you. That said, as a starting player you cannot tank Asylum Demon's hits and expect to win the battle. Asylum Demon is slow, he has no magical attacks, and he is meant to teach you the value of positioning, dodging, stamina conversion, and estus flask timing.
I wish you luck, because if this game is for you it's freaking magical.

It sounds like you're not paying very close attention to the tutorial prompts or the things you're picking up. Dark Souls is a game that demands your absolute concentration first and foremost. If you don't take it seriously it will fuck you up - the tutorial area is designed to teach you this lesson. All the information you need is there, but it's up to you to do the critical thinking.
Friendos, I cannot for the life of me get this game to work. I have tried port forwarding (every single one), I reset my TCP/IP, I altered my MTU, I reinstalled both the GFWL client AND Dark Souls... And now this cannot and will not run. I spent my entire Sunday trying to make this shit work.
Nothing happens. First it was the fact that it wouldn't download an update from GFWL. Every time I tried, it gave me the error code that I mentioned in my "I hate Microsoft" feedback rant. I did all the changes, one-by-one, to no avail. Now the GFWL client won't even open without immediately crashing. The same goes for the Dark Souls executable.

Because if you're going to attempt to squeeze that big black monster into your slot you will need to be able to take at least 12 inches or else you're going to have a bad time...
A great deal of the fun in Dark Souls is finding your own way, you really shouldn't use that map/guide.

With your guys' advice, I decided to give it another shot.
I must have been having a bad day yesterday, or something.
The message right before the door is actually something about how to crit damage when you backstab.
Before that, however is the message about hitting the button as you fall and you can damage it.
So, I tried it. It does negate falling damage, so I landed with all my health. And the creature did lose a bunch of his health. I remembered my MH training and was able to drop him without taking damage.
So, go me. Yay!
I made it to the next area, and talked to a guy who just seemed to be a jerk. Something about going up and down. I saw no way down, so I went up along some paths and stuff.
Poison sucks. Got poisoned by a giant rat, and ran through a bunch of the charges on my Estus flask (I figured that out after messing around a bit too). I kept running around, and somehow found a merchant. Except I couldn't see him, until after I had destroyed his little shop. Like, I kicked apart his thing, then he got kinda pissed. I don't blame him, because I would be irate if I were setting up shop and some guy walks in and kicks everything apart.
I dispatched him while he yelled for his daughter or wife or something, and took his pretty cool sword. I just can't really wield it yet, so whatever. On the way out, I did find his girl, and she tried to kill me too. So I did to her as I had done to her husband.
And all that gave me humanity. Nice, I think. I ran forward a bit and almost got eaten by a dragon.
Blah blah, killing tons of guys later, I ran back, and became Not-Hallow? UnHallow? Normal? Don't know specifically. It was one of the options in the rest menu, which I used. I then spent my souls to level up.
A bit later, after running in the other direction, I joined some dude's club. Or covenant as they call it. I can now heal, I guess. Or would if I could afford it.
And then I called it. I'll play again tomorrow, to see how it goes. It seems to be fun, but it will take a bit to get used to. I'm still not familiar with the controls and how to do things, really.

So, how much exactly can you skip by taking the back entrance to Blighttown? Can you ignore the Depths entirely?
I'm already halfway through Blighttown so it's too late to think about that, but I definitely will be avoiding this shithole on my next playthroughs.
Whoever decided sewer level > Blighttown > toxic swamp was a good idea is a massive cunt.
You're not really missing anything by skipping the Blighttown descent. Unless you desperately need the Iaito or the Ninja Set. There's also the Power Within, but I'd say it's probably faster to climb and get it from the swamp than going through the Depths-Blighttown route.

You'll probably want to go there anyway for Laurentius and the Large Ember, and maybe the Spider Shield, but yeah if you take the other route you don't have to do the depths.

Are you on Windows 8? Have you tried running GFWL in compatibility mode?
Undead Burgh's merchant's wife/daughter, I can't remember, either is a barrel, or inside one at his shop, and he freaks when you break it.
Vista 64-Bit. judge me if you wish
