Possibly, but a lot of the hesitancy regarding this device is inherently tied to not being able to get either consistent answers or any answer at all. I am with you though on the on/off thing as I think MS has mostly put that to bed. I would like confirmation from them as to what kinds of data it is going to track and whether that will be stored locally, for how long, and if MS will ever have access to it. Not because I'm a conspiracy theorist - mind you - but because I like having reassurances.

That's a legitimate request. I understand that. We have to leave the assumption and speculation of PRISM/NSA using Kinect out of it. I would be interested too. Just for curiousity.

I am having a hard time understand the reluctance of users to be online. We are in 2013. Even my TV connects to the internet. Next thing we know, my toaster will have firmware update....I don't know what it is about living room and online that makes people go crazy. I love being online. Being 100% online is not detriment is a feature for me. So this is the part where gamers that are not comfortable with that will buy a PS4. I have nothing against that. I might buy one myself down the road. (I have an X360, PS3 and Wiu at home). I am gamer at heart. I don't care about company allegiance, I just love gaming. I've been doing it since the days of Vic 20 and Commodore 64. I look toward the future, Cloud computing is where it at. Blending single player and multiplayer into 1 experience is only going to get stronger.

Do you own any devices that are disabled when not online?

Its an ONLINE CONSOLE. Why is so freaking hard to understand. It was design to be ALWAYS ONLINE. That's the deal. If you cannot live with this requirement, than don't. You can always buy a Wiiu and wait forever before a game comes out or buy a PS4. its up to you.

Symtex, you really need to calm down. Maybe you think you're the Last Man That Likes The Xbox One in the thread or something, but yeah. These responses don't really lead to further meaningful discussion about the subject at hand... they know they don't have to buy the device.

I don't mean to be rude. Its only the same fear mongering useless argument :

First person : Xbox one cannot be play in Poland !!1 It sucks
2nd person : Do you ever plan to go to Poland ?
    First person : no
2nd person : so why do you care ?
First person : In case I want too.

Look at the previous post. Its all about Microsoft hates the military. Is Blizzard also hating the military because they cannot play World Of Warcraft?

You have to pick and choose your battles. If you feel that the argument is useless, then why pick it up so that it continues on, especially in a manner that draws even more attention to it then simply ignoring it would?

I think the main point of contention is that it doesn't necessarily have to be. There is usually a very large gap between always online and online when I choose to be. For every use case I've seen so far, always online has been used a restriction - not a benefit. This is partly what colors people's perceptions of the device. The other issue is that "online when I choose to be" often covers every benefit to be gained by the cloud, without actually negatively impairing the user experience in the event of a mishap, or if you're in the military. I think Microsoft went too far on this front. A decent compromise would be if you physically have the disk on hand, the XBOX should be able to play that game. Any digital media that you download can be subject to the connectivity policy.

That would be a fair policy that would give consumers choices when purchasing content without alienating anyone. I do hope that they adopt something similar to this in the future.

The console has been market and design that way. It not because they have something against the military. They have internet there too you know. I don't think they went too far. They are trying to move the industry forward. Not everyone is ready for it and that might be why there is a push back. This is 2001 all over again. (Original Xbox)

I didn't mean to suggest that Microsoft did have anything against Military personally (they obviously do not). However, their policy does hinder the ability for military personnel to use their console. So while the policy is not borne out of spite or malice, it is an unintentional consequence that some military personnel who are deployed will not be able to use their system, despite wanting to, which is unfortunate.

The compromise I proposed would move the industry forward, secure the digital realm like they want, and not have any onerous after effects on our military or those without broadband.

I was going to say something about for the circle to keep going around it involving all of us willing to keep the dance going... but fuck it, we can do better than this.

HAY GUYS HERE IS THE LIST OF CONFIRMED LAUNCH TITLES

Call of Duty: Ghosts - Infinity Ward
    Crimson Dragon - Grounding Inc.
    Dead Rising 3 - Capcom
    Forza Motorsport 5 - Turn 10
    Killer Instinct - Double Helix
    Kinect Sports Rivals - Rare

Judging from other release dates, it is a safe assumption that with Watch Dogs having a Nov 19th release date, that will coincide nicely with the console launch as well.

For me, dead rising 3 is a given. I still have hope that the developer is following the same path they did on their prior titles, and keeping the "silly" aspects hidden behind a somewhat more gritty marketing campaign.

Forza will probably be my timesink game, to tide me over until 2014 when the big guns start hitting.

What are you guys planning on getting at launch?

Also, since Killer instinct has a F2P option, I'll probably download that as well and see if Double Helix fucked it up or not. Early gameplay actually looks pretty damn good.

How is it anything like the original Xbox? The original didn't have significant restrictions not seen on the competition. It was a great system that my friends and I got plenty of entertainment from. Same with the 360.
You have to understand, just because you want this sort of thing and are capable of using it, that doesn't mean the same goes for everyone else. There are a lot of people who had 360s who just wanted to be able to play some next-gen Xbox games, who literally won't be able to. There are also a lot of people who don't want things to go this way at this time.

Honestly, MS may have actually been better off if they had just made the Xbox One 100% digital with no physical media option, and been much clearer with their messaging. Yes, they would have lost a chunk of consumers (probably including myself), but there probably would have been less backlash and vitriol.

With 'moving the industry to all digital', I'll refer to the old adage; "Just because you can do something doesn't mean you should". Not every change is progress.

I think you are nuts. There would have been even more. Maybe slightly differently phrased sometimes, but all the complaints people have now would still apply.

So far Battlefield 4 and Dead Rising 3 are definite. BF4 looks amazing, and finally the console version isn't some lame also ran, and I love me some DR, and as big as 3 looks it should be sweet.

After that, Forza 5 if I can save up enough, and Ghosts is an unknown. I've been playing CoD since MW1 but nothing they've shown of the new opne has grabbed me like BF4 and the new shooters coming for next gen.

I just want to say one last piece about why this is so upsetting to me, beyond my options to just not buy and participate in this DRM - ignoring previous arguments I made about how mass adoption of these practices will make them standard across multiple devices (i.e. if we accept this from microsoft, eventually we'll accept it from everybody), more personally and relevant to the thread is that I want to like the Xbox one. I am an Xbox fan. I didn't hate the games Microsoft showed me. I'm pretty damned upset that, for example, I can't play Crismson Dragon or Killer Instinct. Those games are up my alley. But Microsoft's practices have made me choose between my principle and the games I want to play. I'm chosing my principle, but I'm still upset that I'll miss out on those games.

I think everyone is clear of everyone else's stance, and the mods are starting to watch like hawks. How about we all agree to disagree and voluntarily drop the current discussion for the benefit of the thread and all of us? Because we'll just goad and bait each other into continuously responding and that'll ultimately doom the thread.

@syndalis: several times I've wanted to post a link to the song "Will the Circle be unbroken" but I think that'd be out there with witty memes. :P

anyhoo, at this point the only Xbox One title that jumps out the most to me is Dead Rising 3... I may try Call of Duty: Ghosts too. I've never played any of the CoD titles before, so it'd be interesting to see what all the hubbub is about. The later clarification announcements about some titles that I thought were going to be PS4 exclusive has actually pushed my timetable for picking that one up back some. Really doesn't make sense for me to buy both consoles at the same time anyway since I can only physically play one at a time, heh.

I'm also not 100% sure which generation I'll be buying the overlapping games on yet. I have a lot of 360 games that I need to complete already too...

the bet they're making is that allowing a baseline expectation of available online resources will open up developers to create experiences that are so good that it's worth losing the customers who can't or won't go online, even for single-player experiences.

and it won't be at first, for certain. the current model of development of AAA titles is lowest common denominator multiplatform.

but who knows, five years out, if this will end up paying off. i think they're playing a long game here.

Absolutely agree with you. They are playing the long game. Five years from now, when the benefits of the cloud have been proven, I think there would be far less consternation. But we haven't reached that point yet, and Microsoft hasn't given us specifics as to what the future could look like other than an almost religious devotion to the cloud as the future. I think it is fair, given our current examples of this implementation, to be hesitant to leap head first into this brave new world.

And even so, their policies regarding physical media are poorly thought out. There needs to be a differentiation between the physical and the digital so consumers can make the best choice for themselves.

Something that just popped into my head, has anybody heard if publishers bare any of the overhead costs for "Cloud" usage?

I'm wondering if it'd be possible to have a game that say, mined bit coins for the Publisher while providing some minor benefits to the play experience.

It's reasons like that I'd think they'd want the publisher to have some kind of skin in the game with regards to how much cloud service they use.

You're obviously not in the military so stop acting like you know more about military policy and internet capabilities when deployed to the Area or Responsibility, or a Navy ship/sub, or stationed in foreign countries like those of us that serve and have.

My entire military brethren wouldn't be making scathing articles across the entire media if it wasn't a huge issue.

We do not always have access to internet. And even if we do when deployed, it's often slow as a tortoise, hilariously unreliable (it goes down often, sometimes for days at a time), and limited due to security, ip locks, required logins, and the like for informational and electronic security. My last deployment we had the internet most of the time, but the IPs for PSN, XBLive, and interestingly anything that required GFWL were all blocked and the latency made anything else that required constant sending/receiving of data (League of Legends or other online games) effectively unplayable if you were lucky and could maintain a connection at all.

Not to mention the whole country geo-lock thing that screws over service members abroad which is an entirely separate issue from the 24 hour check-in.

It's pretty clear that Microsoft didn't give a single thought to the service members of their home country when designing any of their policies for the XB1 as it cuts out out completely from ever enjoying or using the system. They have eliminated us as a market. And while military members might be a small percentage of the overall percentage, the amount of gamers in the military is a humongous percentage. Everyone games in some form or fashion here.

I won't be able to afford a console at launch this Christmas, most likely, but I'd really like to get Watch Dogs and KI.

Maybe you will get lucky, a friend who is not as principled as you on this issue (or doesn't care... either way) buys a One, and you will be able to go over and play those games there. Would be a shame for you to miss out on something made by the Panzer Dragoon guy.

Speaking of which, yeah... Crimson Dragon. Me likey.

Its an ONLINE CONSOLE. Why is so freaking hard to understand. It was design to be ALWAYS ONLINE. That's the deal. If you cannot live with this requirement, than don't. You can always buy a Wiiu and wait forever before a game comes out or buy a PS4. its up to you.

to be fair, almost every console in history has had a staggered release. it sucked, i guess, that japan got their ps vita before me, but it's not exactly an insult to all americans or something.

It's funny; Ghosts went from being a really pretty showcase at the TV-centric event they did to now being one of the "dogs" of launch (pardon the pun).

I am sure its still going to be wildly popular, but other games look prettier (BF4, Forza), have more massive maps to stomp around on (BF4), or have a unique hook to pull you in (like titanfall, for instance).

I haven't really gotten into a call of duty since the first modern warfare, so I'm not their audience.

It's simply not been confirmed. Current statements do a great job of worming around confirming it works that way instead of just saying "no, we were actually reasonable about this bit"; we do need real confirmation, but things don't look real solid for Microsoft in that regard.

There is a bit brewing about how Microsoft is "screwing over" indi devs right now... but the absence of a system to self-publish is a bit of an issue they need to address. With the strength of the Indi market, this comes across more of a "we haven't done it yet" than a "we aren't going to" - especially since the small / indi scene is where most of the Kinect innovation is likely to come from.

Smartglass, now that its a given because every next gen platform has some manner of second screen solution, is really going to take off this generation. The Divison, where someone not even in the room with the console can take their tablet and pilot the overhead drone, gathering info for other players? That shit is impressive.

I think the main point of contention is that it doesn't necessarily have to be. There is usually a very large gap between "always online" and "online when I choose to be".

I do hope that they adopt something similar to this in the future.

the bet they're making is that allowing a baseline expectation of available online resources will open up developers to create experiences that are so good that it's worth losing the customers who can't or won't go online, even for single-player experiences.

and it won't be at first, for certain. the current model of development of AAA titles is lowest common denominator multiplatform.

but who knows, five years out, if this will end up paying off. i think they're playing a long game here.

There needs to be a differentiation between the physical and the digital so consumers can make the best choice for themselves.

here's the thing: the status quo, which is what you're talking about, creates an expectation for developers to target two use cases in making a game - online and offline. as a result, the online component are nothing but gimmicks and multiplayer, and the core functionality of the single-player mode is always offline.

the bet MS is making is that removing the "offline" expectation as a baseline for single-player development will lead to innovation and differentiation for their product. will it? i don't know, but MS thinks so.

so in this sense, creating a requirement that "you can play offline with a disk" doesn't really make sense, because there's not necessarily even a way to play offline in the first place.

Yea, part of the issue is the market is going to be integrated into one shopping experience.

On equal grounds, with a major published title being able to buy exposure via ads and stuff, indie titles would be easily snuffed out. They've stated that they intend to put some system in place for indies to get out there, but as it is currently they'd have to hook up with a publisher to get on the platform. I really doubt that "Recommended for you" would generate enough purchases to carry the cost of making a small title, but we'll see how that one plays out.

there are some really compelling business reasons to have region locking schemes - not least of which being the fact that Russia and China refuse to respect the IP law of any other country.

the only people i can really think of who are negatively impacted by region locking are importers and people who move internationally and want to buy local products for their now-foreign devices. am i missing an important use case?

Eh, I don't see the issue. The whole console is designed around being online but they may be willing to figure out a work-around for a large and popular enough audience.

I think the main point of contention is that it doesn't necessarily have to be. There is usually a very large gap between "always online" and "online when I choose to be".

I do hope that they adopt something similar to this in the future.

the bet they're making is that allowing a baseline expectation of available online resources will open up developers to create experiences that are so good that it's worth losing the customers who can't or won't go online, even for single-player experiences.

and it won't be at first, for certain. the current model of development of AAA titles is lowest common denominator multiplatform.

but who knows, five years out, if this will end up paying off. i think they're playing a long game here.

There needs to be a differentiation between the physical and the digital so consumers can make the best choice for themselves.

here's the thing: the status quo, which is what you're talking about, creates an expectation for developers to target two use cases in making a game - online and offline. as a result, the online component are nothing but gimmicks and multiplayer, and the core functionality of the single-player mode is always offline.

so in this sense, creating a requirement that "you can play offline with a disk" doesn't really make sense, because there's not necessarily even a way to play offline in the first place.

I see what you're saying here. An interesting idea, but I would imagine that this would be better served on a game by game basis. Presumably, and correct me if I'm wrong here, the only way you'd get development like this is with first party titles anyway, since Sony did not opt for a similar system?

I don't mean to be rude. Its only the same fear mongering useless argument :

First person : Xbox one cannot be play in Poland !!1 It sucks
2nd person : Do you ever plan to go to Poland ?
    First person : no
2nd person : so why do you care ?
First person : In case I want too.

Look at the previous post. Its all about Microsoft hates the military. Is Blizzard also hating the military because they cannot play World Of Warcraft?

Not to be snide, but are you suggesting that Polish people do not have a legitimate right to be upset if the console doesn't work in their country? I personally, do not plan on traveling to Poland anytime soon, but I think for anyone currently living in Poland the matter is of some importance.

to be fair, almost every console in history has had a staggered release. it sucked, i guess, that japan got their ps vita before me, but it's not exactly an insult to all americans or something.

Agreed, however, region locking does not exist on the PS4, and in my opinion, shouldn't exist on this device either.

there are some really compelling business reasons to have region locking schemes - not least of which being the fact that Russia and China refuse to respect the IP law of any other country.

the only people i can really think of who are negatively impacted by region locking are importers and people who move internationally and want to buy local products for their now-foreign devices. am i missing an important use case?

Military members stationed in other countries. Civilians and contractors on work Visas in other countries. People who travel.

Region locking is different than geo or ip locking though.

Eh, I don't see the issue. The whole console is designed around being online but they may be willing to figure out a work-around for a large and popular enough audience.

You don't see how any of what you said doesn't play into the issues people are having with the console in the first place?

it's gonna be a challenge for sure.

i'm sure they can engineer their way around the authorization req with a dongle of sufficient sophistication, but the fact is that they're really pushing their devs into making central facets of their games expect an internet connection.

when i was deployed to greenland, i had basically zero internet. it sucked. my cell phone didn't work on the greenland signal. that sucked too. i couldn't buy carts for my ds at the bx. that sucked too.

being deployed is a hardship - no bones about it. that's why they pay you to do it.

This is a really interesting discussion, I apologize but I have to step out for a bit. I'll be back on later to continue as I really appreciate your views on this irond will. My thought was that the always on connectivity would assist in preventing piracy to being with - thus a region lock wouldn't be required. Though I could be wrong on that.

The big use cases to me are: the military, people stationed abroad, and gaming when I'm on vacation.

I think the main point of contention is that it doesn't necessarily have to be. There is usually a very large gap between "always online" and "online when I choose to be". A decent compromise would be if you physically have the disk on hand, the XBOX should be able to play that game. and it won't be at first, for certain. the current model of development of AAA titles is lowest common denominator multiplatform.

but who knows, five years out, if this will end up paying off. i think they're playing a long game here.

There needs to be a differentiation between the physical and the digital so consumers can make the best choice for themselves.

here's the thing: the status quo, which is what you're talking about, creates an expectation for developers to target two use cases in making a game - online and offline. as a result, the online component are nothing but gimmicks and multiplayer, and the core functionality of the single-player mode is always offline.

the bet MS is making is that removing the "offline" expectation as a baseline for single-player development will lead to innovation and differentiation for their product. will it? i don't know, but MS thinks so.

Presumably, and correct me if I'm wrong here, the only way you'd get development like this is with first party titles anyway, since Sony did not opt for a similar system?

yeah that's gonna be the case. i guess possibly some multiplatform title might figure out some killer feature that makes use of single-player online, but i don't particularly expect it.

then again, what i know of Watch Dogs seems like a good use case. you could imagine whatever DX sequel comes out might do it too.

I take it no one watched the three daily E3 recaps that were on the 360 this week? (They are there now on demand if you want to watch) One of the head guys on development for DR3 said that all the costumes (silly ones as well) would be available... they just weren't going to add silly stuff of their own to the story, but the players could go as far they wished - as they are used to.

The videos repeat a lot of content that was shown Monday, but the interviews were great. They even talk a few times with leading Xbox people....can't recall at the moment what exactly was said, but it did help clarify a few things.

The most annoying aspect of them was that one of the hosts was way too into the HDMI passthrough and I couldn't tell if he was seriously that enthused, faking enthusiasm, or making fun of the original presentation. Outside of those things, I found it quite worthwhile - especially their view on the 360 going forward (they plan on supporting it for years to come alongside the One).
