Any Dungeons and Dragons experts?
I'm trying to figure out a cool character design but seem to be running into a bit of trouble. I'm playing a sorceror/ fighter and focusing on the sword magics (enchant weapon, blade barrier, that kind of stuff). What I'm trying to figure out is a way to have a sword act like a wand, sort of...being able to cast spells off the sword. Any advice would be a huge help. Thanks in advance.

First, Second, Third (and 3.5) and Fourth Eds are all very very different from each other.
Basic: Be an elf.
1st: Be an elf.
2nd: Be an elf. Specially the Bladesinger kit.
3rd: Hope you're playing 3.5. If so, you want Abjurant Champion and probably Eldritch knight or something. Abuse power attack combined with wraithstrike. Being an Elf is kinda helpful as it's free usage of a sword for caster type.
4th: Be a Swordmage.
Ok, I can give you a 3.5 build that will play with this. First, you need to get the Still spell metamagic. This is a +1 level adjustment to the spells and removes the somatic components, meaning you can wield even a Greatsword and cast spells. You're going to want to build as a 2 Fighter (start with these levels), 4 sorcerer, 7 Spellsword (from Complete Champion), and 7 Dragon Disciple.
With this build at Level 20 you will have a BAB of +16, which gives you 4 attacks. You will ignore 25% spell failure penalties, meaning you can wear Mithral Full Plate with no Spell failure. You will be a 12th level Caster, giving you access to 6th level spells. 4/Day you'll be able to channel a spell you cast into your sword and have its affects delivered as part of a melee attack. You will also have +3 Natural Armor, +4 STR, +2 CON, Blindsense to 30ft, and a 4d8 Breath weapon.
This is unintentionally(?) a pretty awesome example of the progression of the systems. 2nd with the many options to bolt on, 3rd with the tactical build puzzles, and 4th with the just pick something that fits there aren't trap options.
Also, leaving behind the race-as-primary-function stuff.
My intentions are perfectly transparent....
This is, by far, the best suggestion here. Duskblades were made to fill the niche you're looking for and have the kind of spells (mostly) you were asking about. They are also, guessing based on intuition here, a good fit for the kind of person who is just asking on a forum how to do the tricky task of making this classic archtype work in the game. There are "better" options but they're more complicated and can be technically annoying in a beer and pretzels game.
There are a couple rules issues with the class but if I don't bring them up they probably won't bother anybody and I'd have to try and remember what they are...
