[PATV] Monday, June 17, 2013 - CheckPoint Season 3, Ep. 1: XBox On Point
They didn't even have to give us a more powerful Xbox. The only thing wrong with 360 is the crapness of the games releases ever since... oooh, about the second rejig of the user interface.
It's not simply a problem with the Xbone and how Microsoft spokespersons presented/explained it. MS has a goal, they want to own your digital world in the same manner as Apple has owned the iCult's souls for so long. It starts with Windows 8 and extends to any platform MS will be putting out, tablet, phone, console. You'll have the same interface on all your devices, and they will sync/communicate with each other. Even know what you want before you do.
So what's creating this communication problem they seem to have? There is no way MS will deviate from this mandate, no matter how illogical it is in the selling of any particular device. So they need their PR spin docs to do and say whatever they can to make everyone think it's a great idea. In the long run is the idea a bad one? No, not really, but you will be giving up a lot of control to MS, and eventually if it goes as planned MS will have a massive captive audience that they can pretty much market to anyway they feel like.
So is MS coming across like some sleazy salesman trying to convince you everything it's doing is really in your best interest? Yes, big time, because they've bet the farm on this new strategy and if it fails, it's going to hurt them for a long time to come.
So get used to the new Appl... I mean Microsoft, where they know what you really need better than you do. No really, they do.
James May is best, Richard Hammond is a close second second, and Jeremy Clarkson is a "knob". I believe that's the proper term. But I stopped watching after I found out they faked the Tesla Roadster's "failure" on the test track.
I really liked this episode's On Point. On top of making genuinely good points, Graham made them without the usual snarkiness that would make them easy to dismiss as mere entertainment.
Also: Obligatory comment about something extremely personal concerning one of the hosts even though it's none of my business.
Richard Hammond is the best, though he's not as lively off the show.
Also I think it's pretty spot on with the Xbone analysis. They just handled it really poorly while offering a product with really undesirable features.
@Titanium Dragon That's not true. There is a reason. As Kathleen mentioned in the show, SONY is basically the poster boy for DRM. The fact that they completely turned their face on that with this generation is rather amazing. They could have done 1 notch less DRM than Microsoft and still looked like a hero, but they basically stated what we already know, DRM is more trouble for the legitimate purchasers than it is for the pirates. That SONY is coming around to at least marginally more consumer friendly practices (by staying where they already were) is a rather amazing non-step given where Microsoft is leading the market. SONY wants to sell me a console for playing games, Microsoft wants to sell me an advertising box. That in itself (not becoming more anti-consumer, and even making a small step away from that by retiring DRM on their first party titles) is worthy of applause.
Let's not kid ourselves here. The PS4 has DRM. Requiring a disc to be present for a game to run? That's DRM. On the PC, we have "SafeDisc" which is basically the same thing.
Small nitpick, can you sync the volume level of the speaking with the music? I had to turn up the volume to hear the hosts, then when the ending music kicked on, I thought I was going to blow my ear drums out.
Microsoft shot themselves in the foot in a bad way. If they stick to their guns, they will lose the next-gen in a bad way. But all they need to say is "We're offering a new bundle with no Kinnect for $400 and we have Halo!" and consumers will likely forgive the rest. But I hope they don't, because they deserve to massively hemorrhage market share with their region locking, DRM servers only available in 21 countries, and deployed military members unable to play games. They're doing everything in their power to punish consumers and I don't want people to reward them for that.
I know LRR didn't create the video footage, they're just voicing over what was available, but it does seem a bit awkward to say "that's me" as the camera zooms in for a particularly gratuitous crotch shot of the DLC character.
Every time I hear about the Xbone, I like to think, 'No person would actually make this product. There must be some redeeming quality'. Unfortunately, such has not been the case as of yet. I really do hope that Microsoft takes these issues seriously. I also hope that the Don Mattrick quote was misinterpreted. Otherwise, I will lose sleep wondering what he plans to accomplish when his customers take his advice and hold onto their 360s.
Bayonetta de Vere is almost reason enough to buy a Wii U... Both Bayonetta and Kathleen are insanely hot and totally badass, so Bayonetta de Vere would be epic... but I don't think that justifies buying a console... ...does it??

People are applauding the PS4 for no reason. Its retarded.
Of course, we all know the real truth:
The best choice of console for the next generation is to not buy one and to just go with the PC.
... of James May's Man Lab. Not Top Gear: that would be Jezza.
And if you don't live in Calgary, you should. It's great. Really. Move today.

Not entirely untrue.

THEY PREVIOUSLY SAID THEY WOULDN'T BE AT E3
PLOT HOLE!!!!
You are welcome.
You had one job! One Job!!
... which I think actually upgraded the product from "I want to support indie exclusives on the Wii U" to "I must have this game at all costs".
