I have never owned a Wii and I'm curious about the Virtual Console stuff, do you have to have a Wii U to get Earthbound and Megaman X, or is it possible to get them on a normal Wii?
Wii and Wii U have separate shops with separate Virtual Console releases. All of the Virtual Console games released on Wii CAN be played on Wii U but only in "Wii mode" which is basically just an emulation of the Wii hardware.
Earthbound was never released on Wii VC so you can only get it on Wii U. Megaman X is on both shops. If you want both games, your best option is to get a Wii U. If the Wii has a game that Wii U doesn't, you can still download it in Wii mode. If they add it to the Wii U shop later, you can pay the fee to upgrade. Playing a VC game outside of Wii mode has certain benefits. Widescreen support, save states and off screen play are the notable benefits.
Here's a handy list of all the games that were released on Wii Virtual Console. The games with lines through them were removed from the service.
Actually the disc thing is what is really holding it back. It wouldn't be that hard to remap the controllers or even emulate the memory card slots, but you need a special disc drive like the Wii had to play the mini and regular discs.
edit: Oh wait, duh. of course it can't. There's no slots for GCN controllers in any case.
You can play Gamecube games on the Wii U and it is awesome. You need to know what you're doing when you jailbreak your Wii U, but you can play the entire Gamecube library if you own the original discs, a backwards compatible Wii, and a spare HDD. You'll also need a classic controller, Wii U Pro Controller, or a Dual Shock 3 to play Gamecube games.
EUGH.
I was getting myself all psyched for wonderful 101, but then i remembered that Rayman legends comes out a week later, AND it's my birthday two days after in which i'm getting pikmin 3.
Cancelled pre-order as i didn't want to overshadow pikmin 3 (yeah you've all played it blah blah it's amazing i'm excited okay?). Will probably wait a bit until later on in the year now. Who would have thought the wiiu would have TOO many games coming out at once? It's like the 3DS summer all over again.

Gah, I'm already angry at the so-so reviews for Wonderful 101. (78 on Metacritic)
Whatever, gaming press. Go back to fawning over Destiny, Killzone 2, CoD, Titanfall or whatever new FPS you think is the future of gaming.
Let's dock this new IP (with its original gameplay mechanics and bright colours) a couple of points cause our reviewer can't draw a hammer.
I remember Nintendoland (77), Lego City (80), Monster Hunter 3 U (83) and even Pikmin 3 (87). All sub 90 on Metacritic and all fantastic games.
This is of course genius and not at all fanboy behavior. I mean, they have played it and you haven't, so there's one point for you over them. And then there's the fact that a 70ish score is meant to indicate 'good but noticeably flawed' not 'terrible, ignore at all costs'. But no you're right, let's give everything a score from 9 to 10. Finally, let's double down on reviewing games we haven't played yet and preemptively bash several games because they're not in your favorite genre. After all, if the games you prefer end up with a lower Metacritic average, it is illegal for you to continue preferring them and having fun with them. :rotate:

I went and checked, I've spent 6 hours and 46 minutes playing the demo. I'm quite confident drawing all the shapes available, including 'tricky' shapes like the hammer and whip. IGN said they couldn't draw the shapes 25% of the time. And regarding the thumbstick, they found "that option to be unusable for anything other than circles and straight lines" whereas I could use it for everything.
I've got a similar story about the 'learning curve' and the 'visual chaos'. I've played the demo; these things don't matter for me. All the visual signs are there to follow the gameplay.
It's disappointing that for a game that I find to be completely excellent, professional reviewers are stumbling over the basics. It's possible that the game has other flaws (one reviewer mentioned fights getting drawn out, etc). For me it remains an extremely promising title.
So it's frustrating. I'm seeing something in the Wii U games that apparently isn't valued in the gaming press (or wider gaming community). Whereas the titles that are receiving a lot of coverage (ie. the big, high production value, AAA titles) look good, but kinda more of the same.
Let it be a promising title, and enjoy it when it hits, but realize that it's niche and not for everybody
I think the Culdcept games should have 400% on GameRankings and be the biggest hit on the planet, and yet I live in a world where the cool-looking 3DS version isn't even leaving Japan
EDIT: Also the new Killzone is the fourth, not the second. Although I heard it's a side story thing and kind of open-world-ish? I think Killzone is dull as fuck but that sounds kinda interesting I guess

Oh yeah, I know this. Not sure why I typed two.
I own Killzone 2 and actually really liked it. Maybe I was thinking of inFamous second son and the wrong number got stuck in my head.
Because Second Son looks rad as fuck and is also not a shooter!
But anyways, yeah
The Wonderful 101 is an isometric view action game where you have to draw your weapons (literally) while there's a gigantic visual clusterfuck onscreen, and just in case that wasn't enough, the extra insurance is that Platinum made it

No way it was ever gonna be a breakout hit
Platinum does niche and does it well
Loved inFamous. Felt inFamous 2 was a slog. InFamous Second Son is a good representation my big problem with the next gen. It's hard to get excited about prettier sequels with only slight variations on gameplay I've already played.
Each to their own, but I'll be there when it's a big shift, such as Arkham Asylum expanding to Arkham City. But anyway...
Back on Wonderful 101, I suppose we'll see how it sells when released. The benchmark for third party games is still ZombiU, Lego City and MH3U (source). If it sells comparable to those, it will have done ok.
(Though I do note ZombiU is the third highest selling game and yet Ubisoft stated it wasn't even close to profitable. Eeek!)
Well Nintendo is publishing it, so I'm not entirely sure whether to define it as first or third-party.
And considering that the gameplay is so well-suited for the Wii U, I have to wonder if Kamiya already had the idea before he knew about the U and simply augmented it with touch controls, or whether Nintendo asked him to specifically come up with a concept, and we got this.
"Professional" game reviewers also have the ability to be incredibly off base and stupid. I recall one found that Ducktales Remastered had two gigantic flaws of 1. Making you start a level from the beginning when you lose all of your lives and get a "Game Over." and 2. Having cutscenes with the original voice actors from the show.
Wonderful 101 seems exactly like the kind of game, that whether its actually good or not, a lot of people just aren't going to get. For one the game is very short, and Kamiya has already stated multiple times that yes, its a short game made to be played multiple times, and I'll bet you anything that a lot of people are going to decry its length as a huge flaw.
I didn't realize that Wii U could only play Wii VC stuff in 'Wii Mode'. It is not the end of world but it is a little disappointing.
Yeah..... it's not nearly as good as Xbone and PS4's backwards compatibility features, right?
Yes, because a poorly implemented feature is perfectly fine as long as the competition isn't using it at all.
Look, the fact that they bothered with it at all is commendable, but it's still the worst implementation of BC outside of the 360.
I was quite bothered with it until I learnt of the 'Hold B as the Wii U boots up' trick.
It would also be nice if they dropped the additional button click when transitioning from Wii U to Wii menu. I don't mind the booting process; it's the fact that I have to ferret out a WiiMote from the cupboard before I start the boot process.
All up, BC for the Wii U is great cause there is a treasure trove of overlooked Wii titles I'm still discovering and playing. (Muramasa!)

When I know I'm going to boot up the Wii U to play Wii games, I just grab a wiimote to start.
The WiiMote power button works to start the Wii U, and holding 'B' on the wiimote boots straight to the Wii menu too.
But yeah, needing to snag a wiimote to switch to the Wii menu if you decide to play a Wii game on a whim, that's a slight inconvenience.

Yeah, them patching in the "Hold B for Wii Mode" option was an improvement, but even still, the feature seems tacked on and poorly planned out. I really just expect better design from Nintendo.
Especially if you need a backwards compatible Wii to make it work
Why not just...play GameCube games on your existing BC Wii?
I personally like that GC games look better, run faster, I have more choice in controllers, and I'm preserving the original discs. That, and I like the fact that Wii U can literally play games from every Nintendo console generation, thanks to the VC. I do still play some games on the Wii or GC, but only the ones that absolutely require the GC controller.
A little late maybe (apologies if it was posted before), but here's a bit of Kill Bill music in your Rayman.
It's rad that we can carry our challenge stuff over AND get a costume for the trouble. I'll definitely be glad to get some new levels for the challenges.
I still don't feel it's poorly thought out. It is certainly better than "LOL fuck you, nothing transfers!" that the others have seemed to adopted.
Which is kinda funny since Sony pioneered it for the PS1 -> PS2 and Nintendo had never done anything like that before. But I understand that the PS3 architecture is vastly different and wouldn't be worth their time.

And again, most people will never actually make use of the backward compatibility.
I'm currently using it to catch up on a number of Wii games that I never got around to but still picked up for some reason. (Hello Baroque, how are you today? Oh yeah, Tales of Symphonia 2, I own that! De Blob 2, don't mind if I do!) I'm definitely an outlier, judging from what little data Microsoft has access to about backward compatibility.
It sounds great in advertising, and people get upset if it isn't there, but most people don't use it because they prefer new and shiny.
All I know is when they give me the option to pay money to move my VC ges right into the WiiU interface, I take it. For Wii games I don't mind too much, but I find it annoying for VC titles and I don't know what the difference is.
Yes, I know it's better than nothing. Nobody is suggesting that the Wii U's BC is somehow worse than not having it at all. But compared to the PS3* and 3DS, where games from both systems are handled by a single unified menu, where the mode switching is done automatically when the game is launched, the Wii U is lacking.
*Yes, I know they removed BC from later models. Doesn't change the fact that when they did have it, it was fucking well done.
Now that that's out of the way, how the Wii U version of Sonic Racing?
My wife saw something about Mario Kart 8. Got a bit excited, then immediately deflated when I told her it was next year. Thought this might hold her over.

That is a bummer about Earthbound though, thanks for the clarification.
The rest of this year is packed for games. Barring some bad reviews, there's a game worth piking up every two weeks.
Aug: W101
Aug: Splinter Cell Blacklist (maybe)
Sept: Rayman Legends
Oct: Zelda WW HD
Oct: Sonic Lost World (maybe)
Oct: Batman Arkham Origins
Oct: Assassins Creed IV (maybe)
Nov: Lego Marvel Super Heroes (maybe)
Nov: Watch_Dogs (maybe)
Nov: Donkey Kong Tropical Freeze
Dec: Super Mario Land 3D
Plus... eShop Games (Mystara!!!) and maybe Zombi U, Res Evil or even Wario if I somehow find some spare cash.
I honestly do not believe I've ever bought as much software for a console before.
Everything I've seen of Sonic Lost World has made it a must buy for me. Though maybe I'm just a bit of a Sonic Fanboy.
