I just saw this on Joystiq:

When her teacher stepped out of the classroom a month ago, Cordy never imagined he would be gone for good. Now her fellow students have turned on each other as the school descends into chaos. Cordy must battle feral classmates and dangerous creatures as she ascends to the cruel Administrators’ offices atop the Edgewood Home for Lost Children.

Our Darker Purpose is a top-down, rogue-like action RPG that combines the ingenuity of genre-defining classics with the expansiveness and accessibility of modern day action adventure games. The gameplay is steeped in a variety of influences ranging from A Link to the Past to The Binding of Isaac to Diablo. We love games with great mechanics and awesome, bizarre storylines, and that’s what we’re creating with Our Darker Purpose.

Each playthrough features a unique set of procedurally generated levels. Death is permanent, but your accomplishments earn you resources to buy lesson and upgrades in the afterlife... and your education lasts forever. Every game teaches you more about the Edgewood Home for Lost Children, the disappearance of the adults, and the darker purpose of the Administrators.
Everything about this sounds awesome but it looks like it's not going to make it's funding. But it looks neat!

They're down to a day to make $11000.00. I can't see it succeeding, sadly, but they did release a new demo.

The game is a whole lot like The Binding of Isaac but less poop basement and more Edward Gorey.

It looks like Don't Starve, Binding of Isaac, and The Drifting Classroom had a weird threesome baby. Pretty neat. Downloading the demo now.

edit: Hmm. Definitely a little too much like Binding of Isaac. The trailer made me think it was going to do more interesting things with that formula.

FFFFF I didn't donate thinking it a lost cause. Goddamn. I'm certainly gonna be keeping an eye on it though. I wonder if they'll have some stretch campaign outside of kickstarter for a bit.

Well, it does have skill trees and different classes you can take to get permanent benefits. So it does differ that way as well as multiple paths to take through the school.

    And remember it's pre-alpha.

see i just don't get the thinking behind that. it doesn't cost you anything if the project fails, and every promised donation pushes it closer to funding and encourages others who might be holding back.

anyway, game looks pretty interesting, seems to have a nice spooky atmosphere. have they spoken about a release date yet?

Well, it was partly that, and partly the fact that I didn't have much money at the time, and had to factor in what the cost would have been.

But it was mostly an "Eh. Why bother" reaction.
