First mac and I don't have a clue. So how many slots are free on an ibook, 2? Is there only one speed of ram?? So far I have only seen DDR 5300 online. What brand of ram should I get?

The two tabs on your keyboard, one between the [0] and the [f12], the other between the [esc] and the [f1] are pulled back allowing the keyboard to come up relatively easily. From there you have to remove your airport card if you have it and I believe the ram slot (singular) will be there.

What kind of ram you need depends on when your ibook was made. I know it is G4, but some models were beefed up a bit before the release of the macbook. Mine was one of those models and runs on pc2700 with a max expandable of 1.5Gigs. Brand of ram really doesn't matter....unless it's "Bob's Ram" or something.

Hmm damn I hope to add more ram and not have to toss the ram I have and buy a huge stick of it. Should I buy 512mb or 1gig? What difference will it make on this computer?

You'll want 1 gig, especially with Leopard coming down the pipes pretty soon.

Yeah. That 256 that you have is built in so you can't really take it out. The one slot I mentioned is the only free slot you have (so there are technically two slots, but one is permanently filled with a stick of 256 leaving you only the other one for expansion), so get a stick of a gig.

Hmmm... my ibook 12" has 512 permanent ram but the processor is the same size as yours so I think that your ibook, is both bigger and about one update back, which means....hold on, i'll have a looksee at the rams.

    You've got the 14" right?

I think your model is the pc2100 ram variety.

Fill out the criteria on the drop down boxes, and you'll be given a bunch of choices.

The last gen 12" G4s had 512 built-in. As recently as spring 2005 they only had 256 built-in, though. That's with the 1.33 GHz CPU. His would have a 256 stick built-in for sure. The answer here is, get a 1 GB stick of PC 2100. You could get faster RAM (but only so long as it is DDR-RAM), but it won't be of much use. PC-2700 won't hurt it. In fact, if it's the same price, you might as well grab PC-2700 RAM.

There you have it. I knew that mine was the larger processor+Ram, but I didn't realize that they made a bigger processor without the larger installed ram.

    OP: Solved?
