in 1996, Roland Emmerich and Dean Devlin showed us a visionary glimpse of the future of filmmaking, science, and contact with life beyond our own planet.

Independence Day featured stellar breakout performances from otherwise-unknown acting talent:

N08RyHB.jpg
William Smith, a virtually-unknown young actor,

bcTFaIy.jpg
William Pullman, who previously starred in an unknown 80s sci-fi B-movie, and

MTWxZCx.jpg
some shirtless dude from a 1993 dinosaur movie.

Independence Day went on to smash box office records, making millions of then-not-worthless American dollars by charming moviegoers with deep and biting commentary on U.S. society and on what it means to be human. The riveting performances alone were worth the admission:

now Roland Emmerich is returning to bring us Independence Day 2, which has a release date of July 3, 2015.

in all seriousness, i am really psyched for this. i loved the original Independence Day. it is incredibly cheesy and shallow, sure, but it somehow hit the right tone of summer action flick. what do you folks think?

Whenever Independence Day is on TV I'm like, "Aw man, THAT movie again?"

And then I sit and rewatch the whole thing.

I think I saw it like four times in the theatre.

if the leaks were true, sort of

its more of just more aliens following original group showing up, and earth has reversed engineered their tech I think? something along those lines

I immediately got lost in thinking about the kind of insane movie ID8 could be, exploring the aftermath of a circa-1997 humanity forever changed by alien technology and thrust into a kind of patchwork science fiction future hundreds of years prematurely. Or the kind of District 9-style techno-slums that would crop up around the UFO crash sites as mankind spent almost 20 years picking them over and adapting/selling alien tech. The fundamental and radical ways human society would be changed by simultaneously understanding our place in the universe and losing every major population center worldwide, and how we move forward? Do we build our own ships? Do we start to expand ourselves into the solar system and beyond as a starfaring species? What are the consequences of using and benefiting from a technology you don't really understand because you didn't do the grunt work to invent it in the first place?

Anyway Willow Smith will probably be in it.

Roland Emmerich has never topped this movie

So I'm a little worried it'll be really bad

But god bless him for trying, I guess, because that first movie is still rad

Listen if they stick to practical effects which the first movie surprisingly pulled off well, keep the tone goofy and action-adventurey, remember how self-aware they are, and not try some deconstructive bullshit to make it "deep" and "gritty" then who knows

Maybe this could be the perfect companion piece to Pacific Rim

I had been noticing how "From the guy who made Independence Day!" usually preceded a pretty terrible movie

fortunately most of them have been terrible in ways I enjoy watching

Is your iPad compatable with the OS of 1996 Apple technology? If not, why would you think you can hack an alien ship with it?

Waaaiiiit. Something about that last thing doesn't quite make sense.
