I think I've decided on a general plan for building my base. I spawned on a peninsula of sorts, so it's always been my intention to sorta wall off the whole peninsula as a place to build the base. Then I got to thinking, instead of building my base on the peninsula, why not just use the whole thing as a base?
So I'm gonna try and work with an open floorplan. As few walls as possible, maybe some zen garden shit going on. Obviously I'll have to build vertically in order to have space for everything, but I'm gonna try to keep it all open-air as much as possible.
Gonna be tough to keep lit properly, but what's life without a challenge?

Two words:
Magnum Torch.
Slap one of those babies down and every block within a 64 block radius is off limits to hostile mob spawns.
So I have no idea what's going on in server-land, but I'm able to play online again thanks to the magic of after-hours office-Internet not being busted even though the Internet in my house 500 yards away is (I'm allowed to use office Internet for personal purposes when I'm not working). I think I'm going to just pick a place and/or mod and mess around until the 1.6 server goes up.
edit: Actually, I'm stuck falling through the floor thanks to some portal glitch. Thanks, Virginia!
Does anyone know if Thorium Cells and Plutonium Cells can also give you those Near-Depleted Uranium Cells when burned in a reactor? Now that my breeder is working properly and I have a set of Iridium Neutron Reflectors, I'm considering switching from Uranium to either of those power sources, but the Refined Uranium -> 8 Near-Depleted Uranium Cells recipe is disabled in Gregtech configs and I'm wondering if I can still form a nearly-stable reaction cycle. If not, I'll have to build some more reactors to take full advantage of my breeder, which is sitting unused most of the time.
I need an idea for a zen-friendly power grid. I don't really want a cart zipping around everywhere, trees growing and getting chopped down, etc. Are my options pretty much solar + wind + water, or can anybody think of a more creative power generation method that would fit a calm, open-air aesthetic?
I'm honestly tempted to shun automation, other than maybe a simple sorting system for storage purposes. Just do everything by hand, like a good salt-of-the-earth farmer.
Well I mean, nuclear will do your business for you. It's zen so long as you're mining consistently. And I would presume not using a Quarry, since those are a little high on the anti-zen appearance, though I suppose you could always start it below the surface if you wanted. Other than that, nether lava? Are you being zen about the nether too?
Haven't been to the Nether yet, actually. Depends on whether it has an interesting appearance when I get there, I guess? I haven't seen any of the new Nether biomes yet, so that'll be cool.
Solar Boilers. Totally zen and green. Really expensive on silver, but it's a nice way to generate power. Supplement it with a small coal/charcoal/log fired boiler. I'm talking 8LP boilers.
Make sure you buffer the energy fromt he solar boiler! Those things obviously don't work at night.

This, this is what I want.
EDIT: Also, the 1.6 server will be a race to see who can be the first one to own a penguin in a tophat.
In addition, I would like to retract my vote for enabling the Biomes O' Plenty puddles feature. I was under the impression that it would randomly fill low-lying areas (like uncovered mine shafts?) with water, but that is not the case. Instead, it just replaces some grass with water on top of the dirt. And that water never goes away. The only way to get rid of it is to dig up the dirt and put it back down.
If it dried up in the sunlight, that'd be pretty cool though.

Dawww. Yeah that's not as cool as I had imagined either.
Solar Boilers are a Factorisation power generator. You're supposed to pipe the steam into a turbine to generate charge, but you can instead pipe the steam into steam engines. . It consists of an iron boiler tank/column (not the railcraft one) that has water going into it and is surrounded by at least 4 mirrors. It'll generate small amounts of steam per mirror, so you need a rather large array around a central boiler column. The caveat is that there cannot be anything above the mirror, not even a pipe, you you either lose a line to get the steam out, or top off the column with a liquid tesseract.
I think a full stack is around 114MJ/t? About 80% of a standard 36HP or just a bit more than a 27HP boiler but zero maintenance once built. Very expensive on silver though. 228 mirrors at 8 silver per mirror means 28.5 stacks of silver.
A normal day/night cycle will have the solar boiler produce a little bit more than a 27LP boiler would produce when averaged out across that timespan.
Almost makes me want to get back into bee keeping in sp but so many new mechanics and bees. AND NEW TREES. Is there any documentation on the new stuff or is it fly by the seat of your pants

Should be viable enough to provide power past the initial hobby steam/ic2 generator phase provided you are on your game about soul shards and get a couple T5 zombie pigmen shards, then use thaumcraft to transmute the gold into silver.
T5 pigmen shards then enough thaumcraft research the gold to silver transmutation is hardly early mid-stage. At that point you could be starting a positive feedback MFR->Boiler loop
Regardless, even a small solar boiler farm is able to produce sufficient power for a low key operation. You're not going to have multiple drive ME Nets with MACs and loads of fast processing, or a MFR tree farm that's being force fed fertilizers from a pig pen, but it'll be enough clean no-fuss power for the basic stuff.

The new Extra Trees saplings are acquired in the same way as Forestry's regular trees and can all be bred with the four vanilla tree species. Aside from that there's a couple basic machines including the sawmill and woodworker. I'd love to see Genetic Machines as well but I've no idea if those are on the way or not.
The only other "new" mechanics I can think of are the Collector's Jar (into which you can insert drones to gain their effects), the Escritoire (a way to research bee species in-game without "meta" resources like NEI or a wiki) and the Jade Moondial (which isn't actually necessary but still nice when breeding bees that require a certain moon phase).

They are. Just not for trees.
Speaking of genetic machines, I just got us some Industrial Bees. I'm letting the princess and drone work out their differences now since I don't like using the Inoculator too much for some reason (not like I can actually do something wrong with Excellent Quality serums, right?).

How long does it take to wind up a clockwork engine?
In my quest for clean, green energy, I'm thinking about setting up a few clockwork engines that feed into an energy storage unit of some kind. I'm imagining my guy doing his daily meditations while winding the engines a few times each morning.
Direwolf20 videos showed they didn't take that long to go to red (you don't want to charge past that. Maybe 10 seconds of constant holding down button?
1. Well, I won't be having copper problems for a while. Found this weird-ass BOP biome with hot springs, there was copper just sticking up out of the ground everywhere. Also picked up some logs that apparently don't have names? Weird.
2. While I was there, I witnessed a naturally-occurring forest fire. Scared the shit out of me because I thought it might be some sort of fire-mob I hadn't heard about in the new pack.
3. I also witnessed a herd of sheep with like 3 or 4 different hats among them. In what I assure you is unrelated news, I now own 3 or 4 new hats.
4. Took down the windmills because of the noise they were making, and stopped using my Macerator for the same reason. I've got a smeltery for ore-doubling, and built myself a Quartz Grindstone for pulverizing other stuff like coal. The crank is very relaxing.
5. Installed Treecapitator on top of Unleashed. I think there's something wrong with me, looking at a 100+ mod pack and thinking, "You know what this really needs?"
