York's shark-lips curl into a growl. "Take her away, boys!" He waves his revolver at you, Acid, and a couple of sec-team get to you and haul you in through a cramped hatch. You're woozy from the bloodloss and can't put up much resistance, but you're not out for the count just yet. Only when they're inside does York gives you a final grimace, Garber, before slamming a hatch down behind him.

The rest of the sec-team follow suit, but just because the fighting's over doesn't make Runt any less agitated. "Creez, now they're just gonna off her in some backroom. Do something Garber!" He's whining, sure, but the look the rest of Acid's crew is giving you, they look like they believe it too. The fruit-van is still anchored, but those hatched are locked tight. There's always the bait-hooks though... What do you do?

Your vision's a little spotty now, but you can see you're being dragged to the fore of the quarry-mega, Acid Burn. York's marching behind barking orders where none're needed, until suddenly Hector rounds a corner babbling about brain freaks and the driver and blood oh god blood. York tells the two guys dragging you to lock you up in the brig, then he leads the rest off to see what's going on in the cockpit.

You're beat up pretty bad and could do with a doc, but they haven't searched you and they're only dragging you by the scruff of the neck. What do you do?

    -

Tai, you grit your teeth through the pain and swing your big ol' knife at what you thought was the brain-worm. Turns out it was just your arm. Ouch. Combined with the poison in your system, the pain is almost blinding. You hear Squiggs cursing from the doorway "Fuck, down to the bone." before (finally) deciding to help.

"Hang on, savvy, I'll get i-" her sentence finishes just as you get your vision back. You catch the end of the other brainworm's tail as it disappears with a 'fwip' into her ear. She's drooling now, stumbling towards you with arms outstretched. Meanwhile the worm on your arm's still snaking slowly toward your own ear. What do you do?

    -

It's almost too easy with this guy, Jackson. You get your glove on him and it's like pushing a busted door open (how do you visualise your brain-fuckery by the way?). He keeps heading straight past you and gives the other mask a good drubbing. They're grappling on the hood now, looks like they might take a while. You could probably start taking bets with Frankie, but there's still the two vans on either side. Both have open hatches, but no one seems to be coming out. What do you do?

    ---

@The Everyman You're welcome to save that Indomitable roll for the next time, since it's not triggered now.

@Void Slayer You're at 2 harm so far.

@OminousLozenge - Deal your knife's harm to yourself. Apply armour only if you've got it on your right arm. You're at 1 harm + whatever your knife does

@Boozer I'd say no compound commands since you've just got the one hold.

The pain is blinding! Bright white, and I'm about to pass out. Suddenly, I'm a passenger in my own body. I have this surreal feeling, like watching myself from overhead. This calls for precision. Is the Maelstrom guiding my hand? Well, why the fuck not. I wasn't doing so hot on my own... Knife's just a really big scalpel. Let's just take it slow and easy, hand.

When York turns tail I send a swarm of buckshot behind him, but it's too late. See you later, motherfucker. Now before I can spit, Burn's kid is yapping at me again and the rest of her crew stares at me like I'm s'posed to be running this show.

"Will you fucking shut it?" I give the kid a hard look. "The Fleet still needs her. When Acid Burn goes down she's gonna be warring against more important shit than some jackoff bouncers. Trust, this ain't the day she dies."

I jack my thumb up towards the anchor. "Can you guys unhook all that? Get me to the other security hatch. Or fuck it, the bait-hooks if you gotta. Get me in, and I can make sure she ain't roughed up too bad alright?"

I am a poisoner. I breathe out a red mist that incites lust. My touch leaves a black mark until my will is done. The maelstrom is a web of dreams that unites us all, and I am a spider.

I look around, mind racing. Go through the hatch, cut the spikes, cut out the wood in the van window? No, too dangerous. The side of the van... yes. I turn to Frankie, honey seeping into my voice, and the red mist seeping into Frankie's nostrils.

"Do me a favor Frankie, use the saw and cut us a hole into that passenger side van from the pickup bed. We're getting out of here. Take anything from the truck you want to keep. I'll cover you." I hold my hand out for his shotgun.
"Fuck out of here, why me?"
"Look at me, I'm not strong like you Frankie. Besides, I'm busy keeping those two fighting on the hood. Trust me, I'll be very grateful later."
"Hmph. This better be some mind blowing shit Jackson. None of your quickie mindfuck bullshit. It better be goddamn triplets that all look like Plum fighting over me for hours, so help me."

Great, my big mouth and runaway temper got me in another mess. I hope Muddy and the others are okay, but no time to think about them now. At least I got in, almost funny.

Ignoring the pain and the blood and the terror, you slide your knife nice and easy under the brainworm, Tai. You keep it steady as it peels off, but flinch at the last second. Your wrist spasms and flicks the knife, sending the worm flying into Squiggs' face.

The worm seems happy enough to slide into her other ear, while she grabs you and hauls you up by the collar. The knife is in your hand, but there's a sliver of life left in her eyes- what do you do?

    -

Runt gets to work loosing the anchor with pure enthusiasm. Before long you're on your way, Garber, with Muddy pitching the van toward the mega's rear. Gold sees your apprehension and gives you a wide grin.

"No worries old man, I know a trick for them bait-hooks." She snags one of the chains with the butt of her rifle and clambers onto the roof.
"Now there's two ways we can do this: the fun way or the slow way." She's shouting over the wind, still grinning. "Slow way: we jimmy up this chain and get to the meat room. Fun way: we give this a yank and swing it to a maintenance hatch under the warren. Whaddaya say?" The warrens are a more useful place to be, but what are they?

    -

Well that all depends on what kind of vulnerability you're talking about, Acid. Dulson has a battlewound in his right leg and from his grunts it seems to be playing up bad today. On the other hand you know that Figg has been gunning hard for York's job lately.

As for escape routes, you're not outrunning anyone in your state (how's that bullet wound looking?) but you could easily lose them in the warrens. Mind you, with most of the sec team distracted you'll need to keep an eye out for any urchins lurking down there.

As luck would have it they're dragging you past the warrens toward the rear brig. Dulson's got you by the scruff while Figg brings up the rear, spit shining his badge. What do you do?

    -

Frankie, fuelled by the thought of your 'reward', goes to town on the side of the right van. The saw was clearly built for this kind of work so it doesn't take much time for him to cut a mansized hole for you. Peeking inside you see a pretty bare cabin lit by the blue crackles of some weird electrode thing stuck to the steering wheel.

Speaking of steering, you've gained on the quarry mega and are starting to eat it's dust. This doesn't seem to bother the masks brawling on the hood, but you can make out a lone van hovering near the baithooks. The pickup is suspended between the two black vans, which seem to be gaining speed and headed toward the van in front.

"Jackson." Frankie powers down the saw and points to black smoke billowing out of the pickup's hood. "The old boy's fucked. What's the plan?"

@grog can you clear something up for me? The knife does 2-harm. The extra point was because you said I was at 1+knife harm. I figured it was an additional point from the worm itself. But regardless of its source, I have no armor. How should that roll have been at +2?

@OminousLozenge Sorry, I meant that your total harm was: 1 (from the initial wormbite) + 2 from your knife = 3.
The harm roll itself should have been +2 because you only took 2harm in that instance. The 1 harm you had already suffered was a separate instance.

I eye the sparking steering wheels warily. "Where's Tai when you need him?"

My eyes flicker between the wrestlers, the baithooks, and the van we're closing in on. Are we getting close enough to jump to that van, to the baithooks? Are we coming in so fast that we'll crash into the van? Could I even warn them in time? Whose idea was it to to grab us, why?

"We're getting off of this heap. The question is, how do we do that in one piece?"

Runt glares at you for a few seconds while you think it over. "The snake hatches lock on the inside, I broke the middle one. Get stuck on one of the hooks and no one will save you." He gives what looks like a genuine happy smiles and points to the large, curved, barbed hooks on the line made to rip apart dune snake organs.

    ---

    Acid Burn

The wound is through the right shoulder, feels like the bullet is still in there and the bleeding has not yet stopped, drops of blood fall to the deck. I flex my right hand and test the arm with a small motion, pain flairs again. Well the muscles still work for now. Don't want to push it.

I might be able to talk Figg into letting me go, but I do not think he is brave enough to go up against Dulson one on one.

I move all at once, I spring off one leg and grabbing Dulson's good leg in a lunge to topple him down, then kick him in the wounded leg as he falls. I try to grab one of his big knives (or guns or whatever I can get my hands on).

@Void Slayer If you were waving your 9mm around, certainly. If not, depends where you keep it- does your work jacket leave alot of room for hidden weapons? They've not given you a thorough search, they're saving that for the brig.

Either way, choose 2 options that should be a 10 (you got +1 forward for that info on the leg) so choose 3 options for Seize by Force and make a +1 harm roll (+0 if you choose suffer little harm). You can choose either a snub-nose revolver or a spiky trench club (both 2 harm).

You're quick for someone with a bullet in them, Acid burn. Dulson can barely react as you snatch the club off his belt. You dodge his backhand easily and once you retaliate he's bleeding from a gash in his head. Figg takes one look at his teammate's unconcsious form and raises his palms at you.

"Hoo hoo, here I thought that bit about killing a dozen guys was just guff." The slimeball's actually grinning now. "Hey how about I deputise you? Could call it community service for all this trouble. You could be part of this new sec team I'm starting." He seems genuine but his left hand's wavering over his recolver. What do you do?

    -

Garber, you and Gold shimmy your way up the chain. Runt was right, the hatch on this one's jammed open, so you pull yourself up into the blood slick room. Suddenly you freeze- there's someone in the room with you.

He's squatting in a corner by the door, eyes closed. He could be asleep, he's not moved an inch. Looks unarmed too. "What's the holdup?" Gold hisses behind you. "If there's a worker up there take him out already!" What are you doing?

    -

A number of things jump out at you, Jackson. First off you're getting a weird vibe from those electrodes, like vibrations in a spider web. There's definitely someone remote controlling them, could be psychic, could be tech. Either way no one in the swarm could swing this.

Second, from the inside these vans look rigged for grab and release with those spikes of theirs. There's also a bunch of shackles and hoods. Putting two and two together you figure these guys were here for a live body, not a dead one.

Lastly, it seems clear that the easiest way out is taking a van, but whoever's pulling the strings will be looking for them to return. There are some spare hoods that could pass you and Frankie off as one of them though... What do you do?

    -

Tai, you get that familiar feeling (which is what?) and know-how pours into your skull like rain. Brain worms feed on activity, fighting back only when they detect any dangerous thoughts. Not a lot of ways to calm Squiggs down, but knocking her out might do it.

Then a chill wind blows in the maelstrom and a little know-how spills out. Something simple, inconsequential, but it's gone. What was it? Regardless, what do you do?

Figg's grin gets a little slimier, but he lowers his hand from his sidearm. "Well with Dulson down we'll need some more muscle to hire on. Make a donation to the cause and I'll see to it you get your shot at York." He steps over Dulson and heads down the corridor. "C'mon, Acid, let's get you suited up."

The stench from the meat room wafts up to the cramped security office attached to the brig. He hands you a sec team uniform and badge (what do they look like?), then turns to leave the room.

"I'll give you a little pri-" his words are cut off by the unmistakable thwack of fist meeting face, and he slumps to the ground before the bulkhead swings shut. A couple seconds of silence, then you hear the steady shuffle of a body being dragged. What do you do?

    -

Your web splays outward, Jackson, reaching into the darkness. The electrode sits before you, sending out subtle vibrations while a thin shaft of light connects it to the pulsing star of the mega's psychic imprint. Picking your way toward it, you see what the device truly is- a brain relay.

Crouched on your eight legs, you feel two vibes coming off it: one obvious, one subtle. The overt one's sending a kind of looped psychic command to the bag men; the subtle one is relaying the van's position as well as directing it on an auto pilot.

If you remove the relay you run the risk of alerting whoever's controlling it, but you can take the van wherever you want. Otherwise, once you release the spikes, it'll take you back to their rendezvous point. Frankie's already trying out one of the bag masks and the bagmen are still tussling on the pickup. What do you do?

    -

Squigg is no softie, but you bop her on just the right spot to send her sprawling. You guess she'll be out for an hour or so, plenty of time to get her to a medic, so you hop into the driver's seat to straighten her out (what kind of state did Bifflin keep the cockpit in?). Easing the mega into a steady auto, you take your hands off the wheel and breath a sigh of relief.

"On the ground, Tai!" York's bulk fills the doorway, but you can see a handful of sec team trying to point their guns at you as well. You hear a couple swearing at the sight of Bifflin's corpse and Squigg's bloody ears.

"Goddamn weirdo, knew you were after the seat. Only you could get past that mag door." He's advancing now, revolver aimed at your head. "Yer under arrest!" What do you do?

    -

It's dark in the meat room, Garber, so you didn't notice all the snake bones littering the floor. They're dry as anything and'll make a racket if you don't take your time. If you consider the bald guy crouching in the corner an enemy, he's right there, but you also notice the shadow of a pair of jackboots under the door. Whoever's out here has the stance of someone on guard, ready to spring into action.

That means this bald guy is either an employer or a prisoner, so he's valuable to whoever's out there. You won't be able to take the guard out without waking baldy up, but a hostage situation may be more viable. Gold's silent behind you, but you can sense she's getting antsy hanging on that chain. What do you do?

    ---

@the everyman take +1 forward on those answers.

@boozer removing the relay is acting under fire, else you can release the spikes and let it go where it was intended to go.

@void slayer that'll be 1 barter to make good on your promise.

Sigh. I raise my hands and turn around slowly, leveling a thoroughly irritated glare at York. "You dumb fuck. Look around this sty. This is - well, was - Bifflin's place. Not mine! You've seen my shop, man. I like things tidy. Clean as it gets in here. Anyone knew me an' Bifflin, they knew we were night and day... right down to our passions. You think my idea of heaven is sitting in this sweatbox staring ahead all goddamn day? Screw your head on straight! I need a challenge. What'cha think I'd be doing up here in the seat if I hadda pilot this land-boat all day, every day? I'd be lost in the Maelstrom half the time outta sheer boredom, and I know don't nobody want that!

"But you know what'd be worse if I was stuck in this seat, York? You really wanna know why this accusation of yours is utter bullshit? Just think about all the shit I keep runnin' on this goddamn convoy. You like the mostly-working plumbing, right? Stick me up here all day, you'd be wading through your piss just to go add more shit to your shit. Potable water? Yeah, you're fuckin' welcome. Navs, comms, guns, engines... you want me to go on, or have I penetrated your thick skull yet? You'd be fucked eleven ways to Sunday without a savvy aboard, and I'm your fuckin' savvy. Now I'm gonna give you a sec to realize that no goddamn human coulda done for Bifflin the way he's been done for, another sec to realize Squigg's death will be on your hands if you don't get her to medbay like fuckin' yesterday, and then you can take a third sec to realize how hare-brained arresting me would be, when I clearly just saved all your asses from careening into another mega, or a goddamn mountain, or right off that canyon over there."

I gesture vaguely behind me. There's bound to be a gorge or crevasse or some shit off thattaway. Besides, all that jabber was just in furtherance of buying myself a mo', because jumpin' Jesus, I gotta think.

Leaving Burn's girl to it I pick my way across the room careful like, dodging bones and keeping quiet. I get to the guy and give him a once over, checking him for wounds or weapons, then clamp my hand over his mouth and haul him up by a handful of collar.

I recoil from the relay as if it were a viper. I had thought the danger was alerting it's master, but with this beautiful device, he might assert his will across the distance, to try to control or harm us. Perhaps with Tai's help, I can take it for my own... no, such machinations must wait.

Even if I could remove the device undetected, what then? The bag-master is too attuned to the maelstrom for my identity to remain a secret for long, and that assumes I wasn't attacked on purpose. Would anyone on the Fleet help me, even if I could convince them of the danger? I have been a fool. I sought safety in isolation, and it has only made me weak.

I pull hood of my cloak back and cover my head, gas-mask and all, in the bag-head mask I've taken.
"The device is too dangerous, we're going to pretend to be part of their gang, at least long enough to get off of this van." I release the spikes with a loud ker-thunk.
"Follow my lead. If we have to do any shooting, hopefully it isn't until we have the head of this crew in our sights."

The uniforms are bulky, padded gear with bits of metal sewn in, wrapped in bright green plastic. They look kinda like extra large football padding that has bright green patches and spikey bits of metal sticking out, but crudely fashioned from scavenged materials. The badges are symbols cut from the front of wrecked cars, this one is a large oval that says "Nissan."

I curse and quickly wrench open the door to see where Dulson is being dragged to. I can probably make it out of here like this but his connections could make this so much easier.

"Alright quit yer jabbering, Tai, you got a right ta silence ya know." The revolver lowers a couple inches and he growls over his shoulder. "Well you heard the savvy, get her to the doc!"

While the sec team hustle Squigg's drooling bulk out the door and bag up Bifflin, York finally puts his pistol away. "Okay smart guy, so you've not got the best motive. You're still lead suspect though. You come in with us and help clear your name before judge wants a trial, maybe you'll get to keep your little workshop."

This is the most you've heard York say since you've known him. "Now you comin' in quiet, or do I need the cuffs?" What do you do?

    -

The guy's alot lighter than you thought, Garber, swaddled in black rags. "Well hello meatspace! That's a nice offer but you've gotta crack this egg before you can make an omelette." He's got one eye open and it's pure white with a thin pink circle for an iris. It practically pops right out at you and, between that shock and his unexpected weight, you're almost toppling backward.

The guard's not moved an inch and you clearly need to make good on your threats, but too much noise could change all that. What do you do?

    -

Soon as the spikes retract the electrode gives a little buzz, Jackson. The van you're in peels off lazily, leaving the other attached to the pickup. The engine thrums harder and you're caught up to the mega in no time. The swarm seems to have backed off for some reason, except for one van tethered to a baithook.

Do you recognise Muddy's van? You're about ten metres from it when a hatch opens from an overhang on the mega and a baghead drops a rope ladder bang on top of the hood. You estimate it leads up to the corridor by the sec office, since the meat rooms have no windows.

Frankie's ready to go when you spot a scrawny looking kid eying you from the back of the van in front. "Looks like they're expecting someone who's asleep." Frankie holds up a bodybag that was tied to the bottom rung of the ladder. What do you do?

    -

All you get is a glimpse down the hall, Acid Burn, before you trip over Figg's head and into the bodybag he's being shuffled into. A glimpse is enough to make out two guys in the dim hallway- both are dressed in regular work clothes and their faces are covered with black cloth bags. One looks to be ignoring the commotion, standing with his back to a meatroom door; while the other's busy zipping up the bodybag you've just fallen into.

Everything goes dark and you realise you've dropped Dulson's club. The bag's pretty tight with both you and Figg in there, but you've still got your 9 tucked away somewhere. Figg's boots start knocking against your skull as the bagman starts dragging you both away from the meatrooms. What do you do?

    ---

I was going to give it til today since you're all fairly close together, so good timing Void.

@void slayer that'll be acting under fire to get free of the bag.

@boozer you can head up the rope ladder no risk (but you may need an unconscious body), or go the baithook way via muddy's van (acting under fire).

@ominouslozenge as above, advances that don't involve gaining items or gangs can be taken immediately. Also, yes, that would be a read person (and in case it wasn't clear, you can get him to see what's really going on by finding evidence for him).

@the everyman i was assuming the threat of violence is your leverage, but feel free to offer a quieter solution if you like. Also, gimme a +cool roll to avoid making a racket on the bones.

I'm currently halfway through an 11 hour train journey home, but once I'm back I'll review people's xp so far.

Now that I've gotten closer, I do recognize Muddy's van. Even more obvious once Runt peers out the back. I spent large swaths of time observing Acid and her crew, to no avail. The secret of their camaraderie still eludes me. Still, to end my isolation, I must do more to understand.

I take a spare baghead mask and tie it over the saw blade, then I remove my cloak and wrap up the saw in it. I stuff it into the bodybag, along with the rest of the spare baghead masks.

"Put your coat in the bag as well, Frankie. We need to bulk up the size of this bag so that it could pass as a body." I look down at the vaguely man shaped bodybag. "Well, at least long enough to get us up the ladder."

I hand Frankie the bodybag, and climb up the rope ladder. "Let's go."

Aw, the fuck? I recoil from this guy and keep him at arms length. Dunno what he's babbling about, so I pick him up by the shirt front and slam him up to the wall. If my point hadn't already been made, I grab a fistful of hair and rattle his skull against the wall hard enough to show this freak I'm serious.

"Forget triplets, Jackson." Frankie grunts through his bag as he contributes his clothing to the dummy. "They better be octuplets and twice as sweet as Plum."

You manage to pull it up there between you, but it's hard work. When you're finally through the hatch you're greeted by two bagmen who seem to take no notice of you. One of them's standing guard in front of a meatroom about 4 metres down the corridor on your right. On your left, past the door to the sec office, one is dragging a particularly large bodybag away toward the brig.

Suddenly bullets are flying from the other bodybag and the bagman to the left is bleeding from his gut. It's cramped in this corridor though, so with all the lead in the air you get winged as well. Nothing serious, but the two bagmen are going crazy now- apparently they can't tell where the shooting's coming from. They're looking at you and Frankie now, and you can hear a couple more coming round the corner.

    What do you do?

    -

You hear the satisfying sound of a gutshot, Acid Burn, right on target. By the sounds of it you winged someone else, so that's a bonus. He's stopped dragging you now and the bodybag's raggedy with bullet holes, but you still can't see much. You can see that the dragger has turned the other way though, back down the corridor toward the meatrooms, and doesn't appear to have clocked that you're still conscious.

You've got the drop, but there looks to be a few more bagmen down the corridor. What do you do?

    -

"Ooh, too much, meatspace, too much!" The little creep still has one eye squeezed shut, but the other's spinning wildly from the drubbing you just gave, Garber. "I'm just the driver, see? Heylel's got me pulling the car strings, while he pulls the man strings!"

He's interrupted by the sound of gunfire in the corridor. The guard at the door may have heard your head-banging, but he seems to have more pressing concerns now. He seems to be freaking out, dancing around and breathing heavily. "Heh. That's the trouble using locals- they're dim when they're not used to the strings." The small man's grin is yellow teeth and an unnerving glee.

Shit appears to be hitting the fan in the corridor, but you get the feeling this guy's still holding something back. Gold's crouched by the door now, knife at the ready, waiting for your call. What do you do?

    ---

    @Boozer You take 1 harm - 1 armour = 0 harm from Acid's shooting, make a +0 harm roll.

@Void Slayer @The Everyman As it stands there are two bagmen in the corridor with Acid and Jackson, with two more on their way.

@OminousLozenge I'll get your post done a little later.
