It's just annoying that people go "fuck Ubi" just because it's Ubisoft. Hack prevention isn't a 100% guarantee. I mean... fuck, I dunno, people get so silly about being angry at companies that are often angered at.
But that said, someone in D&D just said that Ubi is urging people to change their passwords, but the site to do so was taken down by Ubisoft while they deal with the aftermath of the hack. So there's finally some actual fault on Ubi's part here. But really people should be mad at hackers.
I'm pretty sure a variation of "fuck Ubi" is my password.

I may or may not have something remarkably similar. At least it's unique insofar as I don't use it for anything else.
They make the claim of security, and make it mandatory to give extraneous information they dont need (I bought agame through steam, for some reason it requires a uplay account), its their fault when they loose it to pretty much the exact same issue they had last time.
Basically without the list of username/passwords being released to the public (ironically), we cant look and test, and therefore know how vulnerable our stored passwords were and how bad things are(unless people start getting their accounts wrecked). Single password cracking when encrypted can still be trivial. Its batch work that becomes super hard/time consuming. And becomes near impossible when salted and hashed.
To put this in perspective: Sony should be able to make their passwords uncrackable too, but they decided "nah, plaintext is cool". We at the consumer level have the ability, but bad practices make things like that happen.

You really shouldn't use easily guessable things for your password :P.
So let's say that MS's media integration plan takes off. They find that large numbers of people are willing to pay $500 for snazzy voice and minority report control of their cable box. If the cable companies respond to this new information by putting out cable boxes with similar but more limited capability and no ability to play games beyond maybe some Android junk AND they hide the cost of those cable boxes by folding them into cable bills, what would the proper response by MS be?
(Please do not gift. My game bank is already full.)

Time Warner, Cablevision and Cox are relying on a fleet of 10 year old cable boxes, and have only a very small number of newer ones in use.
Expecting a big rollout of anything modern from them in the next 5-10 years is unlikely. they barely make use of what is new now.

Probably nothing. Because by that time everyone who wanted the cable box you're describing would already own the XB1.

probably the same approach they are rumored to be trying in the UK. teaming up with cable/satellite TV providers(in this case Sky) to sell the Xbone as a set top box, further integrating the the TV services and eliminating the need for two boxes under your TV.
it is just a rumor, though it makes sense as Sky are very reluctant to allow the kind of integration that MS are pushing(having to run your STB through the Xbone, changing the UI).
again, just a rumor and even if they are in talks there's no guarantee that any deal will actually be reached.

Synd is right. TV providers are notoriously bad at this kind of thing. Why else do you think cable box UI's are so terrible? They have 0 incentive to make anything decent in this regard. They probably would be ok with xbox just becoming the de facto cable box if they put some cablecard slots in it, saves them overhead and maintenance on the boxes. 5$ a month now is probably a decent charge for "you are making us deal with this shit"

If they release a cableCARD capable xbox one 1-2 years after launch I will be so pissed
as I sell my launch unit and buy the cablecard slotted version IMMEDIATELY

Every time cable TV comes up my immediate knee jerk reaction is to wonder who these people are who supposedly still have it and pay $100 a month for it. Does it sit next to their landline rotary phone, fax machine, and CD changer?

Wait, what? Who *doesn't* have cable TV? Also since when is it $100/month? What crazy cable service are you buying?

probably people like me who have their cable bill lumped in with their internet bill because their internet just isn't quite good enough to stream netflix. for me, basic cable and internet (and 1 extra cable box) through the county's only provider is $90
since there is no competition, they can charge whatever they want.

Every single thing I need streams online. I haven't had cable service in over ten years. Same for a landline. That's just absurd to have anymore.
no, it's absurd for you and what you want/expect from 'X' and 'Y' services.
it's not absurd for hundreds of thousands of other people who are not tech savvy or do not have the services available.
270ish million people, actually. Just in America. Who either directly subscribe or live in homes that subscribe to some manner of cable or satellite service.

I think we could see a large marketshare in here agree that cable is dumb and unnecessary, but the rest of america is dumb and tied to their cable tv. Also at least in my area, bundled with internet its 75$, where just internet would of cost 69~ with fees and taxes. I know some people who have fully converted to "im not buying another tv" and use a tablet/laptop/computer to stream something if they want to watch. And not in a smug "I dont even own a tv" kind of way, in a they just dont use it. but I wouldnt call them the norm for another 20 years if the status quo remains the same. Younger people use their phone/tablet and are used to the convenience and dont see the point in sitting in front of the tube.
Also Synd, same here, I'd have to get a xbox if it had a cablecard slot or two in it, which would make it able to dvr as well..... I dont use cable, but I am forced to have it through my lease agreements for the last 3 years (apartments trying to appear ritzy with "amenity fees".)
I fully expect that the XBone will only have two deals up and running for Australians. One will be the XBone acting as the box for Foxtel (our only cable tv provider in the whole damn country) which is super expensive, and the other will be for Quickflix (our Netflix equivalent) which is also quite expensive as well as missing a huge chunk of the Netflix line-up. It does get HBO shows though, which is interesting. I doubt anything else will work for us. It'll be interesting to see what the Xbox panel at PAX Aus will be about, especially since they're running 3 of the damn things.

Oh, I'm sorry. I forgot I had said it was absurd for everyone everywhere to have it at all anymore. If you care about tech really in any way that isn't average, you very likely don't need a landline. Or cable. The question was who doesn't have cable. I answered and then mentioned landlines, which are WAY farther on their way out than cable is and attached my "absurd" statement to it.
Plenty of companies DO cater to people like us here. I plan to use them and tell the others to pound sand, just like I've always done.

I am a fan of technology, make my living off of it, and I like Game of Thrones, True Blood, Breaking Bad, The Walking Dead, The Newsroom, Always Sunny in Philadelphia, Archer, and a shitload of other shows that either have a delayed streaming date, or no streaming date at all unless you pay for cable.
Aside from content theft (or accepting I wait a year and have these shows spoiled for me by all my friends who also watch them), what are my options aside from cable?

Don't bother with Ubi right now.
Bother with every other site you may have used the same info on.
If you used the ubi password on, say, your bank site or your WoW account... change it there first.

Perhaps there's a reason for that which is wholly Ubisoft's fault?
I'm pretty sure a variation of "fuck Ubi" is my password.
Like the fact that despite purchasing Blood Dragon on Steam I had to get a fucking Uplay account, which has now been hacked, in order to play it?
Nah, it couldn't have anything to do with it.
I will gladly hand it over to the hackers as means of punishment.
Yeah, their piece o' shit DRM just made me vulnerable to the threat Ubi claim their customers are.
