It needs to match the HDMI 1.4 spec. Certainly not rare or expensive, but older cables will not work for that resolution.
Aha, makes sense. Still the addition of a HDMI cable in both consoles as something that seems to be being celebrated is still kinda weird to me, seeing as I buy mine for less than £1 each.
Given that most people have a HD TV these days you'd expect a HDMI cable to be included as much as you'd have expected a Scart or RF cable in the days of yore.
Sooo... there is a wired headset in the xbox one retail box again.
They reversed that decision, and are including one.
edit: also, they charge over MicroUSB instead of a proprietary port, and send the data over USB when connected instead of wirelessly.
It's kind of funny how MS had a vision (an incoherent one IMO) about how they were going to change up their system to be more modern and probably have more widespread appeal but they just get forced to keep making concessions to their current customers.
I also can't help but suggest that if they hadn't tried to combine their causal focus with Kinect and Tv functions with their powerful new gaming console then they wouldn't have this problem.

They weren't included last-gen. Which a lot of review sites made a big stink about.
Plus there are still people that think an HDMI cable means dropping $29.99 at Best Buy.
I don't think there was a huge uproar about not including HDMI cables. It was the fact that the cables included were composite and not capable of doing HD that was kind of funny.

I'm pretty sure the original core Xbox 360 didn't even have an HDMI port. There were also a few games where the text was completely unreadable on SD displays.
Them putting even more shit behind the gold paywall may be the thing that kills this off for me. I'm fine with gold because I treat it like a subscription to whatever games I play on xbox. But of the however many years I've owned a 360, I've probably only paid for gold 60-75% of the time. I've also had plenty of times when I didn't need to be able to log into gold, either because I wasn't playing at all, or because I was only playing some single player.
I'm not enticed yet by what the PS4 has on offer, and I'm hoping Microsoft reconsiders where they're going with this, but I'm definitely frustrated that they're putting the tv-watching capabilities, specifically, behind the paywall.
If I buy a car with satellite radio, I won't be frustrated if the satellite radio stops working when I don't pay the sub. But if they deactivate the CD player too, that seems pretty stupid.
I think it's more like if you buy a car with satellite radio, USB, aux, and 6 cd-changer and then you decide to stop paying for satellite radio it then disables the regular radio, USB and aux jacks, and you can only use 1 CD at a time. Oh, and you can only subscribe to the satellite radio through your car dealership, you can't just go to Sirius directly. Well, you could pay Sirius, but you still wouldn't be able to listen to it in your car unless you paid the dealer as well.
Why do all console comparisons end up being cars or fast food?

Cars are a fundamental necessity to most of us, something we HAVE to buy, but also commonly associated with luxury goods.
What is this I don't even.

Oh, speaking of Disney Infinity, Nintendo's Pokemon Rumble U will support putting characters in the game via RFID-equipped toys, straight through the tablet controller. That could wind up being pretty big.
It was only a matter of time before Pokemon jumped on board the Skylanders train. That's a cool use of the Wii U tablet, though.
Except the Pokemon game dosn't require the toys at all. All the content is unlockable in game without them.
Then why have the toys at all? Just something for kids to collect?

You know how, from time to time, someone asks whether or not there have been any high-profile games that were kickstarted and released successfully, and we usually use FTL as our go-to example?
Well, Shadowrun Returns released a couple weeks back to pretty solid reviews for a fairlyt niche, relatively small-budget RPG, so I think we've got our second positive example.
The Kickstarter campaign hit its $400,000 goal in its first day, then hit $1.8 million in the end. How did you spend that extra money, and how did your studio reconfigure and adjust to accommodate that extra funding? If a campaign gets excess funding, how should a game developer handle that?
Jordan K. Weisman: It was an amazing and very emotional experience during the Kickstarter campaign as the fans opened not only their wallets, but their hearts, writing really touching emails and posts about how the various versions of the game had impacted their lives.
As the backer funding climbed, so did our expectations, and the audience’s expectations for the title. So while the scale of the topline funding went up by almost a factor of five, the expectations went up even higher. I mention “topline” in regards to the money raised, because what most backers -- and many crowdfunded studios -- don’t really think about is the difference between the money raised and the resulting development budget.
In our case the deductions were: Kickstarter and Amazon's share, Microsoft’s royalty, the production cost of all the physical rewards (books, t-shirts, boxes, dog tags, etc.), and the cost of picking, packing and shipping all those rewards. When you add all that up it represents over 35 percent of the money raised.
What are some of the biggest mistakes you see crowdfunders make?
JKW: The three biggest mistakes I see crowdfunders make are:
1) A presentation that doesn’t clearly communicate the vision and/or doesn’t give the audience a connection to them as people.
2) They don’t know enough about how much it cost them to develop their game. Recently I have seen potential backers not backing projects because they didn’t think that the project was asking for enough money to really do what they said they were going to do and this undercut the backers’ belief in the team’s credibility. And if the team was unlucky enough to get the money they asked for then they and their backers are really screwed -- unless the team can find the additional funds needed to finish the game.
3) They didn’t do their homework on the costs of producing or fulfilling their rewards and thus end up with a lot less money for producing their game.
I'm pretty sure the original core Xbox 360 didn't even have an HDMI port. There were also a few games where the text was completely unreadable on SD displays.
Yeah, but almost shockingly enough, the original 360 came with an all-in-one composite/component AV cable. Later versions just gave you a shitty SD cable and expected you to shell out for HD.
It seems like the entire industry swerves back and forth on just what they include in the box. Consoles used to include 2 controllers and a game, then they didn't but bundles have now made a comeback. Then they gave you all the cables and peripherals you needed, then they just gave you the controller and sold everything separately. Now HDMI cables and headsets are back to being included.
Seems like the only thing you can count on being standard is that there's no standard.
"The sausage of Green Earth explodes with flavor like the cannon of culinary delight."
A PlayStation All-Stars mobile app has surfaced on iOS and Android. Currently only available in Europe, PlayStation All-Stars Island is sponsored by Coke Zero and will feature multiple mini-games based on PlayStation franchises.
The app launches with Uncharted: Drake’s Pursuit, which lets players “run at breakneck speed through a tangled jungle of fallen trees as legendary treasure hunter Nathan Drake. Keep on sliding, jumping and diving over cliffs and raging rivers to escape Drake’s ruthless pursuers and collect Coke Zero Drops that will unleash PlayStation heroes and bonus challenges into your game.”
According to the app’s description, PlayStation All-Stars Island "is divided into 4 zones, with each zone representing one franchise." Additional mini-games on the way include LittleBigPlanet: Epic Race, Infamous: Survival and Gravity Rush: Infinite Skies. The app hints at Ratchet & Clank, Sackgirl, and Jak & Daxter also making appearances, asking “who knows which legends might pop up unexpectedly in your game to lend a hand or super power?”
All mini-games are "based on successful mobile game play and are endless, allowing the player to keep going until they fail." Players will also be able to scan QR codes on specially-marked Coke Zero bottles for "exclusive downloads as well as access to Coke Zero booster moves."
We’ve reached out to Sony for more information on the app (including potential releases in other territories) and will update this story with any comment we receive. Until we hear back, you can see much more of the mini-games in our image gallery.
PlayStation All-Stars Battle Royale hit PlayStation 3 and Vita in November 2012. Earlier this week, Sony confirmed that no new DLC is coming to the game, though a new balancing patch and free costumes are still on the way.
Update: Sony has confirmed that PlayStation All-Stars Island will not be coming to the United States. A Sony representative provided the following statement to IGN:
“The PlayStation All-Stars Island free iOS/Android app is part of a European marketing promotional program with Coke Zero and is currently only offered in select European territories. At this time, we have no plans to release this in the US.”

And now I finally understand why Sony's marketing department saddled the fighting game with that awful name -- they were trying to turn "PlayStation All-Stars" into a thing over all kinds of different games.
But I'm really baffled as to why the maker of the system with arguably the most hardcore audience decided to make something for arguably the most casual audience. And slather it in Coke Zero.
edit: also, they charge over MicroUSB instead of a proprietary port, and send the data over USB when connected instead of wirelessly.
I'm starting to wonder what exactly IS finalized with the XBOne. It seems to be in a weird state of flux right now that it really shouldn't be in. I almost wonder if Microsoft has a variety of XBOne packages ready to go and is just swapping to the next one in line based on how much people are bitching.

We misunderstood. The console launches November 2014.
Key features of Microsoft's Xbox One console, which is expected to go on sale in November, will only be available with an annual subscription.
The requirement covers recording and sharing of gameplay videos, making Skype video calls and using a service that finds gaming opponents.
An Xbox Live Gold account that currently costs $60 (£40) will be needed for all these features.
Sony PlayStation 4 owners will also have to pay for some online services.
However, the president of Sony Computer Entertainment confirmed, via a post on Twitter, that its machine would not restrict games recording and streaming features to paid subscribers.
The webpage shows that, as with the current Xbox 360, a Live Gold account is needed if owners want to use their new console for online multiplayer gaming, watch Netflix or similar streaming services and to browse the web via their TV.
In addition, on the Xbox One the annual subscription will let players share videos with friends. The console records a rolling sample of a player's previous five minutes gameplay to make it easier to share key moments.
The payment will also let owners chat to friends via video on Skype and use the OneGuide and SmartMatch services.
OneGuide analyses what Xbox One owners usually watch and recommends TV shows and YouTube content to match. The SmartMatch service links players with other gamers of a similar ability to ensure they are not outclassed in multiplayer matches.
In June, Sony revealed a change to its previous policy which gave all owners of its PlayStation 3 console access to online multiplayer games. With the PlayStation 4, owners will have to pay $50 (£32) a year for a PlayStation Plus account to do the same.
They are certainly getting lots of coverage. Unfortunately, the earlier coverage seems to have made the subsequent coverage a bit more critical. This seems to be a feature common to the media, where if initial impressions are bad, then the media will continue to look for the bad and may overlook the good. Take a look at the photos that go with the linked article and their captions to see this type of slant in action. It's why they always say first impressions are so important in marketing. What I'm most impressed by in the situation is how much Sony's reputation has turned around from a couple of years ago.
I'm pretty sure the original core Xbox 360 didn't even have an HDMI port. There were also a few games where the text was completely unreadable on SD displays.

In the future they won't even include the sodding console, it'll just be a box of Styrofoam, a wired headset and a powerbrick!

The PlayStation 4 is built to last, so don't expect the next batch of consoles to come any quicker than this generation did.
The PlayStation 3's life cycle was pretty long, as far these things go. While some companies have claimed that we should be moving back towards shorter console cycles, the engineers at Sony don't appear to buy into that theory. The PS4 is in this for the long run: Mark Cerny, the system architect of the PlayStation 4, knows the hardware better than anyone and he expects it to stick around for a while.
"It looks pretty healthy to me," Cerny said regarding the PS4's potential longevity. "The PS4 cycle will be pretty much like the PS3 cycle." The shorter console cycles of the past were necessary due to the challenges of bringing new capabilities to customers - when you bought a PS1, that was the machine you'd be using until the PS2 came out. Now, with downloadable firmware updates and lucrative digital markets, a console can survive for as long as its hardware can perform. And as far as hardware goes, Cerny has faith in the PS4. "The most important thing," he says, "is that it's the most powerful games console ever created."
The PlayStation 4 will be launching this holiday season. As for whether it'll be going strong seven years from now, well, we'll have to wait and see.
Key features of Microsoft's Xbox One console, which is expected to go on sale in November, will only be available with an annual subscription.

What I'm most impressed by in the situation is how much Sony's reputation has turned around from a couple of years ago.
And right on the tail end of that, Sony's Shuhei Yoshida is there to rub a bit more salt on the wound:
Paying for PlayStation Plus is not necessary to access PlayStation 4's recording and sharing functionality. Following earlier news that Xbox One's DVR feature requires users to subscribe to Xbox Live Gold, fans took to Twitter to ask PlayStation if this would be the case on PlayStation 4, to which president of SCE's worldwide studios Shuhei Yoshida said, definitively, "no" repeatedly.
It must be kind of amusing to be working at Sony right now. When all you have to do is wait for Microsoft to reveal something totally horrible about the One and then just announce that the PS4 does the opposite.
Somewhere in Sony HQ: "Why do we have this ridiculous bullet point by 'PS4 does not interface with kitchen utensils' ?"
One week later...
Microsoft: "The Xbox one, if not connected to the Internet for 25 hours, may throw knives at you."

Once again, some strange messaging going on up in here.
Fact: Xbone requires Gold for various things.
Reaction 1: What? But my Apple TV/cable box/ipad/toaster can connect to some of those things without an additional fee!
(So... why would it bother you if you're set already? Seems disingenuous to complain about something that isn't actually a problem ((APPARENTLY, just going by this argument)). Maybe you're just a defender of the innocent or something...)
Reaction 2: More reason NOT to get Xbone!
(You were going to buy the ONLINE ONLINE ONLINE console and not get Gold? I call shenanigans. That's like buying an airplane with no budget/plan/intentions to get a license or fuel. Yes it's possible and even allowed... but it's also kinda dumb. More like you were planning on getting Ps4/nothing and are pointlessly attacking the worst case scenario.)
Before it gets all 'lol Xbox Defense Force' in here, I do agree it's greedy. It's also not a concern for people who want the Xbone for Halo or TitanFall or Destiny or COD or etc. And that's the majority of us forum type people who've even considered the thing.

I agree, other than a point for marketing in "Winning" I don't think this makes a difference to most gamers who are paying for PSN+ or XBL Gold so they can play Call of Duty Multiplayer.
And who buys a $500 or even $400 console for netflix anyway*?

Plus there are still people that think an HDMI cable means dropping $29.99 at Best Buy.

To entice the serious business players as well as the kids.
Well, Shadowrun Returns released a couple weeks back to pretty solid reviews for a fairlyt niche, relatively small-budget RPG, so I think we've got our second positive example.
There's a good article about the process here: http://www.gamasutra.com/view/news/197132/Qamp_A_Learning_from_Shadowrun_Returns_Kickstarter_success.php
Highlights include:
Steam: Elvenshae // PSN: Elvenshae // WotC: Elvenshae

But I'm really baffled as to why the maker of the system with arguably the most hardcore audience decided to make something for arguably the most casual audience. And slather it in Coke Zero.
?
I'm starting to wonder what exactly IS finalized with the XBOne. It seems to be in a weird state of flux right now that it really shouldn't be in. I almost wonder if Microsoft has a variety of XBOne packages ready to go and is just swapping to the next one in line based on how much people are bitching.
We misunderstood. The console launches November 2014.
Gamers to pay for key Xbox One features
They are certainly getting lots of coverage. Unfortunately, the earlier coverage seems to have made the subsequent coverage a bit more critical. This seems to be a feature common to the media, where if initial impressions are bad, then the media will continue to look for the bad and may overlook the good. Take a look at the photos that go with the linked article and their captions to see this type of slant in action. It's why they always say first impressions are so important in marketing. What I'm most impressed by in the situation is how much Sony's reputation has turned around from a couple of years ago.
In the future they won't even include the sodding console, it'll just be a box of Styrofoam, a wired headset and a powerbrick!

Allforce, don't get too sad.
Wow, it's 30% worse then the PS3, minimum.

And right on the tail end of that, Sony's Shuhei Yoshida is there to rub a bit more salt on the wound:

Somewhere in Sony HQ: "Why do we have this ridiculous bullet point by 'PS4 does not interface with kitchen utensils' ?"
One week later...
Microsoft: "The Xbox one, if not connected to the Internet for 25 hours, may throw knives at you."
Still waiting on 2016, the Year of the PS3™.
Fact: It requires Gold for the same things its two competitors do not.

Or, crazy idea here i know, i play online games on my PC because most if not all console games don't have dedicated servers so here in aussie land its pretty laggy, even if they go the extra length to match us against other aussies/kiwi's *AND* i really like halo?
Thanks for calling me dumb though, appreciate it.
Just like it did last gen.
I agree, other than a point for marketing in "Winning" I don't think this makes a difference to most gamers who are paying for PSN+ or XBL Gold so they can play Call of Duty Multiplayer.
And who buys a $500 or even $400 console for netflix anyway*?
*Because there are far far cheaper alternatives.
