Hello @jdarksun, @Nealneal, @Void Slayer, @iliketrain and @Farangu ! This is the in character thread for my Delta Green game. Firstly, this thread is for in character interactions, the actual game stuff goes in here and so forth. If you need to ask me questions about the game or just talk about anything in the game, the OOC thread is here. Try for a post or so a day, but due to the nature of PBPs I know that's not always possible for whatever reasons - so don't fret if you can't. Very often in a game like this different players will be doing different things, so if you need to have a break for a while that is perfectly possible. The only exception to this rule will be if you are under dire peril, or if your actions are essential for saving another character for one reason or another. I will wait until you can post or take an action before moving the game forwards. It's worth noting that the campaign is not actually called "Blackout" and it's the name of the first investigation that introduces the game. Once we are past that, I shall modify the title to the actual name of the campaign ;) In any event, below is the first event that happens in the game! All of these events happen simultaneously unless otherwise stated.

When you are making dice rolls, ensure that you use spoiler tags for geth. Although I don't think it shows rolls in spoiler tags right now, hopefully that functionality will be readded to it in future. After some thought, so we can keep the narration in this thread as consistent as possible please make dice rolls in the OOC thread. Where mechanical questions and similar go anyway, so that fits pretty well.

Otherwise game begins...NOW.

Keith moved to USA from China with his family when he was young. He graduated medical school like what his parents wanted then moved to New York where his brother Jason is studying architecture to get more experience, but really he just wants to get away from his parents.
Although it was his parent’s wish to study medicine didn’t mean Keith doesn’t enjpy it, quite contrary he has always found various medical fields fascinating. Particularly psychiatry, although he is not sure whether he was actually interested or just liked the hot lecturer.
Currently crashing at Jason apartment, Keith is doing some temporary work while trying to get his own place and a foothold into this new city.

Background
Growing up, everybody thought Carrie was going to make something out of herself. She had a good head on her shoulders, and the right can-do attitude. She went through a dark patch as a kid, the same rough spot that all teens go through. But Carrie never really got over it. She lost her direction, and stopped applying herself at school. She only got into college because of her parent's legacy, and she dropped out before graduating.

Carrie spent the last of her college money - and her parent's goodwill - on a cross-country road trip. When the funds dried up, she returned home and shocked everyone by applying to be a police officer. Even more surprising was that she was good at it. Not great by any stretch, but she seems to have recaptured some of that can-do spirit.

It's still her first year, so she's still on probation. But she's getting down the basics, and Carrie thinks that this just might be something to give her that meaning and purpose she lost all those years ago.

Background:
Simon Davis is a tall (6'5"), gangly fellow of respectable build. In his late twenties, he still makes time for the gym a few times a week and tries to watch what he eats. Clumsy doesn't even begin to describe his movments though, it's as if the world was made for people who can bend and move in ways that Simon's body seems incapable of mimicing. For the last two years, he's been dating Lizzy Carter, a young woman he met during his grad studies. He's ready for a family life, but she, being a few years his junior, isn't quite ready to settle down just yet.

He spends his time at work studying and teaching Art History. While he can't seem to walk ten feet without tripping, he has an uncanny grasp of the processes involved in the production of art from many varied periods. This expertise led the FBI to his door several years ago during a counterfeit investigation. He has since been put on retainer by the Bureau for similar cases in the future.

Working with the FBI sparked a previously unknown interest in gunplay and the law. It started out innocent enough with watching too many cop movies, but has grown to include reading up on court cases and taking a few classes on how to handle a pistol. He doesn't expect the FBI is going to have him busting down doors or anything, it's just something he has found that he enjoys.

Farangu: Adam Ellis; Weatherman

Background
...I hate this place.

The thought always came to Adam right before he went on the air. Before that forced smile came to his lips. Before he pretended like he gave a damn about how the teeming masses could look forward to good weather or bad as they went about their lives.

"...and now, we go to our very own Adam Ellis, who's got some good news for us, right, Adam?"

For you, maybe.

He had just enough time to think that and get it out of his system before the lights and cameras swung to him. The beams illuminated a powerful looking man. Standing just under 6', he was a trim figure, and if one were to look closely enough, one could see a muscular frame underneath the modest suit. Along with the square jaw, iron cheekbones and sandy brown hair, he looked like he belonged in a different life; perhaps a successful stock broker, or a rising star in Hollywood. But no. Adam was here, at the local news station, delivering weather reports.

It wasn't for lack of efforts that he was in this field. The Ellis family was fortunate enough(or wealthy enough, depending on who asked) to be able to send both Adam and his brother, Philip, to a good school. He was well studied at college, where he focused on meteorology, but also had time for other pastimes. He always enjoyed working on machines, both analog and digital. He had a large social circle he moved in. He even found time to do a bit of shooting at a range, although he was only ever a slightly-above average shot. His brother didn't get as much out of the university experience as Adam did, but that was to be expected when Phil decided to major in Communications. Still, Adam was always fond of his older brother. It was nice to outshine the oldest.

"...Adam?"

No, if he had to peg a reason as to why he wanted to desperately be somewhere else, it was that he felt there HAD to be more to life than this. Everything at the station was so well oiled, so seamless. People idly chatted while they typed up stories. If the police scanner spewed forth any of its information, someone would calmly accept to go out and get the story. More often than not, it was Lucy Romero. She was one of the few people he could tolerate at this place anymore, because she wasn't like the rest of them. She was lively. When things didn't go her way, she screamed in frustration. She performed joyous dances when she got lucky breaks. She had a visible pulse, and Adam felt that was something to be encouraged.

"How about that weather, Adam?"

But everyone else around him frustrated him. He had decided that, like a disease, he wouldn't risk getting infected by their complacency. While at the station, he spent most of his time with his nose in a book, or learning a new skill. His co-workers didn't like that, and he didn't care. He was determined to not be like them. And that's when the name started making the station rounds...

"Strange! You'd better start making with the weather talk RIGHT NOW, or you're in DEEP SHIT!"

The harsh words blasted into his earpiece brought him back to the studio. His winning smile flashed back onto his face. "Well, Darlene, I do in fact have good news for everyone..."

I hate this place.

Alaster watched Kamal land a devastating blow to the face of his opponent. The bar TV had a nice crisp image of the fight and the staff had been glad to change to it. Why do I torture myself like this Alaster thought.

"I coulda been a contender" Alaster impersonated poorly to his companion for the evening, Rachel or Rosanne or something like that. What mattered is she laughed at his bad jokes and he could forget about her when he flew out tomorrow.

"You are impressive enough, a Doctor who saves children around the world!" she laughed. Something about it set him off, her repeating the half lie he had used to pick her up in this hotel bar.

"Enough?" he said in a loud voice which drew a few eyes "I had a real shot and blew it" his voice raised a bit and he stood up "I could not be what I wanted, not what anyone wanted, just too slow for sports, just too unsteady for surgery, just too dumb for actual patients!" he was shouting by now, at no one in particular.

Everyone had had expectations, his coaches and trainers to succeed in the sport, his now dead father to become a respected doctor, his mother to be a good husband and father. But never good enough, always just scraping by with improvising. Even his current position was more due to taking credit for others work and networking. His skills were third rate, by his own standards.

He looked around, realized that everyone was looking at him except the woman in the next seat.

Alaster fished around for some bills and dropped them on the counter. "It's better off this way, my fiance wouldn't have been too thrilled." he said quietly with a smile and walked out.

I flip on the flashers up top and the spotlight to get a better look at what's going on, then grab the radio. "Dispatch, 595. Responding to a 10-53 and a 10-65 (electrical) in Corona near the 111th Street Station." After snagging the big flashlight, I step out of the car and survey the scene. As if the sudden blackout wasn't proof enough, the splatter across the taxi's windshield lets me know this night is about to get unfortunately busy. "Dispatch, 595 again. We have a 10-54 here, please send a bus."

Guess the power outage isn't local. I swing the flashlight's beam over the other car to see if that driver is in as bad of shape, then check the back of both cars. Been a while since I've had to wear a first responder hat, time to see if all that studying paid off.
If there's nobody holding an obvious weapon, I'll check all the injured people out using First Aid, most obviously injured to least obviously injured.

That's about all I know, I never took first aid classes...should have.

Realizing that the cab driver is probably beyond his capacity for healing, Adam takes a moment to look at the other car...and sees a police officer. He opens the door, and steps into the street, waving his hands.

With a grimace, he leaves Phil be. There were no major bodily injuries, and he could work on getting his brother back into it later. There were other priorities.

As the police officer performs her work, Adam looks around for the first time, and sees no lights anywhere. After taking a second, he hears many car horns and shouting, and begins to think this isn't a localized blackout.

    "...get this guy to Elmhurst."

He turns to face her. "It doesn't sound like the roads are going to be any better than they are right now, but I don't think we have another choice. We'll get him into your squad car, and hopefully the staples you put in him won't pop along the way."

At this, he realizes the tone he's projecting, and meekly adds, "...unless you have a plan, Officer."

I frown, trying to remember proper protocol for a situation of this magnitude. "The back of the squad car isn't exactly comfortable, but we can't leave him here. C'mon, give me a hand." I grab the injured guy's feet, and motion for the civilian to grab him under the shoulders.

After gingerly loading the man into the squad car, Adam runs back to his brother, finding him still in a state of shell-shock.

"Phil! Come on, we gotta go!" Without waiting for a response, he violently shakes his brother by the shoulders until Phil returns to the present.

"Get in the back seat, and keep the driver still!"

Adam then moves to get in the passenger seat. Wouldn't do to completely usurp the cop here.

I pop a couple flares to mark the scene of the accident for anyone else attempting to drive by... but fat chance of that happening. The roads are packed. Even with the flashers on, I'm not making any headway. There's just nowhere for the drivers to go - New York is effectively gridlocked.

I have no idea how long it took us to get to Elmhurst Hospital Center, but it feels like hours. "Hey - Phil, was it? How's the cabbie doing? He still with us?"

First thing is to find a way out of the train car. Simon will shine his phone around looking for the exit. Then he moves to help the injured man the best he can.

"Sir, can you hear me? Lizzy, could you hold your phone so I can see?"

He will try to be gentle with the man's arm, holding it close to the man's body as he tries to get him on his feet. If the man is unresponsive, Simon will attempt to carry him out of the train if possible.

After dropping off the taxi driver, Adam nods towards the police officer, with a weak smile on his face. He knows that he shouldn't go too far, as the officer, whenever she found a spare moment, would probably want to take statements from him and Phil.

I've never seen Phil freeze up that badly...could it just be the crash?

Further ruminations were distracted by him first feeling the pain from his injuries. Personally, he was amazed his body didn't let him feel it until now. He looked around until he found a spare set of bandages and some iodine, and tried to patch himself up.

Adam made a mental note to himself to ask Lucy about parallels between this blackout and the previous one, whenever he saw her next.

He then turned to the police officer. "Is there anything else that you need from my brother and I concerning the accident?"

  • jdarksunjdarksun Struggler CORegistered User regular
    Carrie

I furrow my brow at the mention of the blackout from a decade ago, struggling to remember anything my eleven year old self might have caught. Unfortunately, all I can come up with is being frustrated that I couldn't watch Kim Possible and being told to read a book. Which I did not.

Shrugging, I get back to work. I file a report with the hospital, noting that my precinct will need to be notified of the taxi driver's condition so that we can finish the accident report. Next is more paperwork - a quick note that, due to extenuating circumstances, I drove the injured taxi driver John Doe to Elmhurst and had the assistance of two civilians.

    Speaking of which.

"Adam, Phil. Come with me, please, I need to inform you of your rights and get statements about the accident." I lead the two of them back to the car, set up the dashboard camera so that we're being recorded, and flip open my notepad. "First: thank you for your help with the taxi driver. The New York Public Health code and New York's Good Samaritan provision grants you immunity if it is determined that you inadvertently caused the driver injury while trying to provide first aid. You did your best, nobody's going to fault you if he doesn't make it.

"Second: for the record, please state your full names and recount the accident as you remember it. Also, I need a state-issued photo ID if you have one on you." My feet ache, the adrenaline is ebbing away, and that last cup of coffee is going to need replacing soon. But work first.

"I'm Adam Marlowe Ellis. This is my brother, Philip. A little before 1:20, I got a call from Phil to pick him up from an apartment. I told the cab driver, whom I had already hired, to swing over and get him. On our way back to Phil's residence, the blackout occurred while we were crossing an intersection, and the cab was struck by a car coming from the driver's side. After checking over Phil and myself, I went to examine the cab driver, which is when you found us."

Phil meekly nods intermittently throughout, although at this point it seems as though the shock has given way to embarrassment at this point. Both men reach for their driver's licences and hand them over. Adam's picture is quite stern faced, while Phil's is much more light hearted.

Adam also hands over one of his business cards. "In case you have any further questions."
