So, uh...I made these giveaways yesterday:
And I remember someone making a comment about "Isn't Payday 2 out in 4 weeks?" I didn't really understand that comment until now. While creating all these giveaways, I guess I accidentally set Payday to 4 weeks rather than at 6 PM today like the rest. I'll see about fixing that later today. Sorry about that!
I liked PA 1 and 2, the games themselves weren't great but they were fun, and the writing was more than enough to keep me playing.
3, on the other hand, was just too boring. I'm sorry zeboyd, I wanted to love your games, but I just don't. The worst thing about PA3 for me was the clear and simple winning strategies that turned every fight into the same boring repetition of the one before it, which just made things draaaaaaag.
There absolutely isn't an advantage to Origin over anything; unless you want to play their exclusives like Battlefield, Mass Effect, Dead Space, probably Mirror's Edge...

I don't hate EA as much, I do hate them for Sim City. Not for the failed online DRM, although I dislike it and DLC. I just don't think the game is what I wanted. I doubt I will ever get the 3d version of Sim City 4. I liked the numbers.

It is EA's battle net. I like steam, because it isn't everything Valve. It is everything anyone wants to put on here plus us (valve). Battle net is Blizzard. That is it. Origin is EA, that is it. Gamefly is a different service IMHO.
Origin will continue to be fucking trash until they stop trying to charge me three times the US price for games just because I live in another country

"You don't want a competitive service to them, what you want is a complementary service that enhances your game experience irrespective of where you made the transaction. That's the shift you're going to see from us."
Because you were totally competing with PSN and iOS and not some other random service you conveniently didn't mention (and still, as of yet, refuse to stock games on), teehee.

Now this is uter BS. I hear this from AU, and WTF. I think companies need to get over this other world stuff. I understand it comes from governments with trade embargoes and such, but really? We all talk on the internet now. I just don't get politics and angry people and price fixers. But that is a digression from the Steam that we know and love.

Sounds like they wanna converge their console and mobile games with the PC ones. Strange move.
The main problem I have with Origin and battle.net is that I have to had to repopulate friendslist, that noone is ever on unless I ask them through another service, and that because I have so few games on it, I usually don't have it loaded so I don't know who is who (different names are a pain), I don't know who owns what. And since PA is a loose group of gamers the 100 friendslimit is annoying too.
It is not the devil but it is an inconvenient service that has no real reason to exist apart from perceived benefits to EA. There are no advantages for me.
And then of course there's the fact that EA had to be bullied into changing their ToS. That's hard to forget. 'We reserve the right to scan your HD and send files up to us' is a really heinous line.
My main beef with Origin is that it's so damn obvious why they're doing what they're doing (Read: they want Valve's money), and expect people to put up with the disadvantages of their digital platform without any of the benefits that makes steam worthwhile. I was big into playing Mass Effect 3 for a while, and it's "integration" for the multiplayer service was just shoddy.

Thanks, classhole! I've never played a Sonic game. This is going to make me want to do murder, isn't it?
Also, I want to point out that this game is still on Rizzi's wishlist. I see this sometimes - people gifting games that are on their own wishlists. Too much class!

Yeah, but it took Valve several years to get to the level it is now.
Origin and Battle.net aren't going to get there in their first couple years. Although, they should be able to learn from Valve and get a head start.
I don't really think they're trying at this point. The companies seem content with what they're doing, Blizz especially.

Yeah but they're not in the same market as Steam circa 04 you know? There's years of precedence and knowledge of the competition. You don't get to build a car without hydraulic brakes because, hey, the Model T totes didn't have one.
Though I've said it before, EA is 100x more serious about improving their presence and supporting software than Microsoft has.

I don't expect blizzard to change. They will get people on battle net purely for what they have. Say what you will about WoW, it has a following. SC2 has its following, D3 Meh. I was kinda upset when I got the Sim 3 for my girl and it said I needed origin though. It didn't used to. But, than that stopped the sharing of discs I guess. You only ever need the last expansion in the drive to play, so if you have 12 of them, a friend can play 11 just fine.
I wasn't around for original steam, so I don't know. I like steam now though.
EA, as a public company, has every reason to make a service that isn't terrible and that people want to use.
Has the SimCity thing blown over yet? Feels like even the hackers and crackers stopped caring about the game. Now they're selling balloons for 9 bucks?

Hey now, that qoute is legit.
They aren't competing with Steam. They aren't even in the same god damned boxing ring as Steam. They're on the sidelines, serving the between round drinks and staring longingly at the ring going 'gee, one say I'll be there'
And yeah, Origin is kinda just about servicable as a store but the thing is Steam provides so much more than that in terms of community features and usability (eg, if a download fails on Steam, it starts back up once it gets connected again. On Origin you have to manually do this, so if your net is prone to minor cut outs you can't download games overnight).
My morning just wouldn't be complete any more if I didn't wake up to the unmistakable smell of a giftbomb exploding nearby.

Well ain't that something.
I think origin is more like an apple store, they only sell there stuff. and pretend it is better than everyone elses (yeah, macs arn't bad, but not for me).
Steam is more like best buy. They sell all kinds of stuff from all kinds of people, and it goes on sale!

I don't have an issue with the online, the core game online, offline, on a plane, on a train, in a house with a mouse is not what I want. I want Sim City 4 that isn't square. And maybe a little more robust road system like NAM, only easy to use.
It doesn't exist. Now if that was made and put on steam I would be in heaven.
Edit:
Hell, it doesn't even have to be as pretty as the latest greatest graphics.
One of them is just a Store page. Gives me a marketting blurb and system specs.
The other gives me user reviews my friends wrote, a metacritic score, tells me which of my friends own it, review quotes and a link to an official forum.

All right there on the page where you'd usually try and avoid having any aspect that could show the game in a negative light.
It's why Steam's so awesome is they seem to get that buying games digitally is making the consumer put a LOT of trust in a service and as a result they seem to treat people with respect for it. Origin doesn't disrespect the consumer, it just doesn't do anything outside of selling games. Heck you still can't gift on it outside of keys or buying a friend Origin giftcards and sending them the codes.

I know I've been tempted by the new SimCity game during the last few sales. I really like city building and Tropico is fun, but SimCity is kind of that comfort blanket that goes back to middle school (or earlier probably) for me.
It surprises me that you have all these kind of "throw back" games that have hit, where folks take RPGs back to their 16 bit roots, or newer graphic adventure games, or things like Super Meatboy with a very retro feel, but yet no one has gone back and remade a city building game. I know I'd buy a new game that plays like SimCity/2000- streamlined, with a bit less micromanagement than the newer games, retro feeling but with some modern twists.

I will have to check that out as well. I want a new city game, but nothing is what I want. Ah, to bad I didn't have money to just pay some programers to make what I want. :P
Man, despite all the playing I'm making positively no progress on the backlog. I really need to stop playing either endless games like Civ or Monster Hunter, or infinitely replayable games like Mystara, and just play something I can actually beat, just to be able to say I'm diminishing my backlog!
So, ive whet my appitite by getting rid of HL2. I need to learn more. How do i gift or trade coupons? It says tradable but it doesnt have the gift button on it. I have a few about to expire if i can hand them out to anyone for 50% Duke Nukem 3d and 25% off dungeon hearts.

There's an "invite to trade" option when you right-click on the name of someone in your friends list.

That's exactly the problem I have, I keep going back to Marvel Heroes or Triple Town instead of pounding through my backlog. I'm doing much better on my 3DS were I've finished a couple of games recently, but when I sit down at Steam I end up hitting the same games over and over again.
On that note - can anyone tell me how many levels Thomas Was Alone has? I'm thinking about pushing through that one this week but wondered what I was up against.

Set a time limit for the endless games. Play them for say, a week, and then move on to the next game.
Regarding backlog progress: Just go with my approach. Throw your hands up in the air in despair and just play whatever tickles your fancy at any given moment. The games aren't going anywhere, after all. And with class spreading around here like some sort of infectious disease, trying to keep up - let alone get ahead - is nothing more than an exercise in futility that's certain to cause headaches, premature aging, mood swings, loss of hair and appetite, heightened arousal, and the inexplicable urge to adopt a kitten.
I'm interested in CK2 cards. I have the Khan, Runestone, and Horde, looking for others. Got Endless Space, Monaco, Portal 2, L4D2, Magicka, and TF2 cards to trade. PM or hit me up on steam.
