I'm really enjoying the 2DS overall. I've put 13 hours into Pokemon X in the past day and a half, with no cramping issues.
My biggest problems are more likely the game than the device, as moving your character with the circle pad can be a liiiittle finicky (forget trying to go through doors while your skates are on), but switching to the d-pad for approaching characters or items works well enough.

Hey I traded a pokemon with my wife, she has a 3DS, I have a 3DS XL. Hers asked her if she wanted to do Game Chat? The hell? It said mine wasn't allowed!

I think this issue came up once or twice in the Animal Crossing thread for a similar issue with the friends list. It has to do with approving a parental controls privacy option somewhere in the 3DS settings. I don't recall what the option is off-hand (though someone could probably tell you), but you can try poking around your system settings a bit.
I haven't seen anything. It uses it's own system instead.
You have to turn on streetpassing and spot passing in the wifi menus (the button at the top center where it shows friends/acquaintances/passerbyss)
Pokemon's streetpassing is called Pokemon Miles. In essence, each person you come across sends out very, VERY basic data - where they are from, in essence. The game takes this data and converts it into Pokemiles, which are larger based on the distance between your home and the person you came across. These pokemiles can be then converted into a special currency in game.
Basically pokemon gambling. You put a pokemon up for trade, and you receive a random trade in return, with no way to see what you're getting.
Put in about 7 hours on Pokemon this weekend. I've been distracted by all the other cool things the 2DS does. I'm sure it will get old after a while, but I love the AR cards! Are there any other cards other than what came with the system?

Yea, I got a poodle dog last night from japan using wonder trade.
It made me feel bad that I sent him a level 5 Zigzagoon. :P
I got a level 30 female Charmeleon for a level 15 male Abra. Wasn't even a Wonder Trade. Passerby knew what he was getting and still traded.
Later, a different passerby challenged me to a duel and destroyed my level 20 team with his mega-evolved Mewtwo. I couldn't make out the rest of his pixelated team, but they looked mean, too.

Someone from here...I cannot remember who, challenged me to a dual last night.
I died pretty quickly since my guys are not all that evolved yet...but I took out his ivysoar before he stomped me!

Weird. I don't have any parental controls turned on or anything. I see no option for this anywere
Paper manuals are dead. Sure they were cool back then, but when Nintendo started consolidating languages/regions they started to get thick. Later Wii and DS game releases got sort of ridiculous how thick their manuals got since they print out everything in 3-4 languages.
Although that extra dead tree weight did help add some reinforcing protection when they started using flimsier plastic cases. Now I sort of worry when I get Wii U and 3DS games shipped to me, especially for the discs - 3DS game cards are still tough.

I had to turn off Rune Factory 4 for a whole couple of minutes for this, so...you owe me lunch.
If I recall correctly(Note that the configuration screen may be different on an XL), I had to go into Parental Controls, set a PIN, and then make sure all of the Parental Control options were set to unrestricted. This was a while ago though so I'm going off best recollection.
So there's some physical preorder stuff for A Link Between Worlds popping up. For the time being, it's exclusive to GAME and the UK, but I'd expect it to make an appearance in other store chains on the international scene eventually. Maybe.
In any case, here's a Vine Nintendo EU posted about it:
Holy shit, I got 3 streetpasses today. Three. This is the most I've ever gotten in one day and is anyone surprised that they were all playing Pokemon? Three dudes, three copies of Pokemon Y.

I'm almost always surprised when I get a Streetpass. I find I actually get the most while driving around and having my 3DS in my car. I get them during rush hour on the highway :P
Unfortunately, the path I go to and from work doesn't seem to have a whole lot of 3DS users flitting about, which is strange because I'm in Toronto. I get only a couple a week Maybe I'd get more downtown or on the subway.
Luckily there's a couple guys at work I can rely on to get consistent passes but it's still not enough for my liking. If Nintendo keeps this Streetpass thing going, I'll be stuffing whatever future Gameboy they make into my future kids backpack when he/she goes to school.
It's taking a while for the Nintendo Zones (i.e., McDonaldses) to ramp up and get the maximum of six in one go. During a road trip I popped into several, but the most I ever got was two.
On the other hand, I was lucky enough to be at the Texas State Fair, sponsored by AT&T, which set up loads of temporary wifi hotspots... and were also Nintendo Zones. Boom. 50-odd streetpasses in one afternoon with minimal effort.

None of my McDonalds seem to have it working, as I never get streetpasses when going by them.
Yeah, there's a few in my neck of the woods that have been non-functional for quite a while. I tried mentioning it to one of them and was rewarded by massive bafflement.
Speaking of which, I just started up a new 3DS game that will suck up many hours of my life. I'm speaking, of course, of Fire Emblem. (I live in a time warp.) Given my free time is limited, I'm tempted to turn off the battle animations and just live with abstract combat. Will I miss anything truly awesome if I do?

I know I never got tired of the battle animations. Even after a hojillion hours of playtime. Also, attacks where two characters just beat the shit out of the enemies are awesome. I vote for leaving them on
Everyone has a price. Throw enough gold around and someone will risk disintegration.
I believe I eventually turned off the animations for advance wars after the second game and never missed them. So if you never knew they were there or what they were I guess you would be fine not seeing them.
I really like the animations in FE. Felt like it further colored characterization of the cast in a way, through their body language and how they react to things like using a power or taking damage. There were certain characters who became my favorite that way that might not have done so otherwise.

I turned off battle animations about 2/3 way through my first play through and enjoyed the game much more. My gaming time is precious and those animations get repetitive after you've seen them. There's no denying they're awesome but I would turn them off and see how you like the flow.
I had quite the scare this evening when my 3ds wouldn't recognize my sd card. 30 seconds of pure panic. Then it worked. Any ideas what's up there? Should I take some preventative measures.
So Amazon send my copy of Pokemon X via 5-day FedEx, even though I have Prime. I brought it up to Amazon and they credited me with an extra month of Prime, sent out another copy of the game with overnight delivery and recalled the one they sent ground. :^:
I was worried because my amazon page said it was expected on the 17th, but I got it yesterday. played about 2 hours so far, spent too much on new hats and lost to the first gym leader. decided to save and wait to get torchic to try again. I only have froakie and pikachu so far.
Hoping tomorrow involves another shipment of X/Y at my store. Been sold out since a few hours after we opened on Saturday. People have been going nuts looking for a copy. Case in point:
On Sunday, a pair of teens came to the store looking for X or Y. I told them we are out and not gonna get any until at least Tuesday. One of the teens had both copies of the game, but his friend had nothing. He looked so dejected when I told him everyone in the area is sold out.
Feeling bad for him, I decided that I would engage in my tried-and-true tactic of "help the customer however possible, even if it means losing a sale." Told the kid to download the game from the eShop. He said he can't because his internet is down. I told him that I'd let him use our WiFi but we close in 20 minutes and it was a big download. Super slumping shoulders. BUT! McDonalds up the road is open 24/7 and they have free WiFi. He looked up with a glimmer of hope in his eyes.
Teen 1 (takes out his wallet): "Dude, we can drive there and get your game RIGHT NOW! I'LL BUY THE FOOD!"
Teen 2: Thanks Ben, you're the man. (shakes my hand)
They literally ran out of the store. I hope he got his game and they bro-fisted when the present showed up on the menu.
Moral of the story: Send out some more copies of the game already!

Unfortunately most games nowadays regardless of console/handheld are going digital for manuals.
