I like this trend of stuff like Void Destroyer and this Flagship game. Also that's the first game that's made me think to myself that I may actually want a Rift one day.
Yes, Void Destroyer is excellent and this looks really great too.
Flagship looks kind of cool but I'm sort of worried there's going to be no reason to look at anything other than the little map in your ship all the time, or, alternatively, the game will be so trivial that it's fun to look at but not to play. How many RTS games are there where you can just give a few orders every once in a while and spend your time looking at what happens? Not a lot of good ones.

Granted, but with the Rift?
You could have the main console before you, but other monitors on the bridge with different info. A helmsman you can issue order to in order to have the Flagship operate independently. A gunnery station you can take over.
Honestly, with Rift integration, they need to think big because they've laid the foundation already.

I think it could work really well if battles are paced appropriately and with just the right level of AI automation. I can very easily imagine a slower paced battle being a lot of fun to play.
There was an old game about the battle of waterloo where you actually played Napoleon or Wellesley and issued orders by dispatch. It would take time for your orders to then filter down to the troops. It worked really well. The pace was totally different but very tense and you got to observe the flow of battle AND the effect of your orders. This could work in a similar way

I think you have to just think of it as a Rift game. If you have to mouse & keyboard move your view between your minimap table and the outside world? Yeah, you're probably just going to stare at the table the whole time. But if all you have to do to look up is, you know, move your head and look up? That's pretty damn awesome.
I think directing your ships is only going to be half the challenge. It seems a little silly to put the player in command of a battleship and to not let them charge into the fray themselves so maybe we'll get some ship simulator aspects with it like in I-War or Bridge Commander.

Can't watch the video right now (work), but it had some shots from the viewpoint of a fighter right? I assume you can take control of a pilot to lead an attack Dungeon Keeper styley.

I'll be in my bunk.
What can I do do in the game?
For the initial release of the game we're looking at exploration, resource management, galactic strategy and tactical ship-to-ship combat. Keeping the scope relatively small will allow us to really concentrate on these aspects of the game design. Our hope is that the game will sell well enough on initial release to allow us to expand the game into other areas.
Can I play this without a VR headset?
Absolutely, the game can be played on a normal monitor.
Will you be able to fly the smaller ships like fighters and bombers?
Probably, yes. But we're not looking to compete with Star Citizen and it certainly won't be the focus of the game. It's also going to be hard to win a battle from the cockpit of a fighter, so make sure you have the upper hand before leaving the bridge!
Will you be able to board enemy ships?
It's likely you'll be able to send teams to board and capture ships, but it's probably not something you'll be doing yourself. This is something we may add after the initial release, but only if we can make it work in the greater context of the game.
Will there be multiplayer?
For now, Flagship is a single player game. We are excited by the possibilities offered by multiplayer though, so we'll be taking a serious look at adding it after the initial release.
I want to give you money! Why aren't you doing early access?
The game is currently in very early pre-alpha and we couldn't in good conscience accept money for it in its current state. However, once the game is more feature complete we'll proabably allow people to buy the game as an alpha. It's also quite likely we will put the game on Steam Early Access towards the end of development.
What engine are you using?
We're using Unity 3D. It's easily the most flexible game creation tool we've ever used and takes away most of the heavy lifting involved with 3D graphics programming.
When will the game be finished?
It's too early to say at the moment, sorry! All we can say that we're aiming for sometime in 2015.
Looks like Star Wars Attack Squadrons was cancelled. The reason given is resources for the game are being used for other Star Wars titles. Hopefully we'll get something good in the coming years but right now our only option is Bioware's poorly implemented Galactic Starfighter. It's not even worth trying... maybe I can find some old Star Wars sims on ebay or amazon. I just want a fucking Tie Fighter reboot! Is that too much to ask?
Galactic Starfighter is fucking atrociously awful.
I'm not surprised Attack Squadrons was canned. I can't think of anyone that was even remotely hype for that game after the really shoddy trailers they put out.
Yeah I tried that game once over a weekend, it's been a long time since I played something that bad. Maybe it will free up the idea for someone competent, another Tie Fighter or even Rogue Squadron would be better.

This takes place after a massive war in the solar system and you play one of a few factions
Destroyer is a classic warship suited for artillary and sniper attacks
Corvette is healer and hit and run attacks although that might be the Tactical cruiser
Dreadnought is the last one and is the tank, I think, Google is translating them to Bretton Woods.
Each ship appears to have 4 powers each and uses energy as mana
Yager is fan of space games so there might be a space map and this is just the first tileset, starting with 2.5D space before full 3D
This is what they've been doing in the past and they did already mention that this is a throwback to it (2.5d though I'm not sure what you mean by that). So, while possible this IS a substantial part of the game.
Shame you can't get YAGER digitally. Would be the best introduction.

2.5d, I'm talking submarine movement, two dimensional plan, and changing of altitude, but not really flying/maneuveringin the third dimension to the same level you are in the other dimensions.
So elite is not a version of wing commander: privateer?
I WILL do it. You have been warned.
That's my favourite PA comic ever. Cracks me up every time.
Also in reference to those elite videos. You kids and your colours.
I will never forget the opening screen for the game. It played the blue danube while your wireframe Cobra Mk I rotated around in all it's polygonal glory.
Huh, Void Destroyer got an update recently and the dev says the game is 50% complete in terms of story content. I might load it back up soon, the latest trailer for the game looks pretty great.
edit: I think it's the boss fight mentioned in the update notes
I've been biased against ELITE since the beginning because of the control scheme. I'm sure some consider it a feature, especially when it comes to docking with bullshit rotating stations, but in 90% of combat, I don't care about my orientation relative to the bandit, I just want to keep my nose (and guns) lined up on him. Pitch and yaw allows me to do that intuitively. With Elite, it's a constant series of "roll, then pitch; roll, then pitch; roll, then..."

Doesn't seem like many people talk about Elite here, but it's actually pretty fun. They just went into their next phase of beta, and everything is coming along nicely.
It's kind of like planes in space, except you can come to a full stop. Or reverse. You can also thrust up, down, and side-to-side while doing everything else, so it's more complicated than it looks at first glance. I would say that it has a deliberate pacing to it; the yaw restrictions were a deliberate choice to prevent 'turret-ing' in space.
Regular beta starts at the end of the month. Honestly, at this point I would just wait until then since the normal beta is cheaper than the premium beta, might as well save the bucks.
Also, regular beta will probably have tons more things to do then the limited (albeit still fun) premium beta.
Practically nobody talks about Elite here. I'm not sure how grouping is going to work in Elite tbh, I think you will have a friend's list but I don't know if guilds will be a thing, I'll have to investigate that.
I am in on normal beta - it is wierd how no one is talking about Elite... It looks just as good (and in some ways even better!) than Star Citizen...

I can only speak for myself, but I never played (or heard of) Elite growing up, so it holds no nostalgic interest for me. The few screenshots I've seen look good, but it's not something I'm excited by at the moment. I'll wait until it comes out and if it looks great, I'll pick it up.

I'd be all over Elite right this second if the pre-order for beta access wasn't so freakin expensive. So I'm just going to wait until it's done and has a normal price.
Yeah, same here. I've gone to their site a couple of times, ready to buy, but then I remember they want $150 for a beta with only a few systems and some sample fights.
An I'm like

I never played any of the older games either, I just wanted a game that I could actually play while waiting for Star Citizen. It has pros and cons, I think it will be a nice complement and alternative to Star Citizen - I'm currently having fun with it.

The premium beta was $150, but that includes all future expansions as well, so it does have some value. Still, the regular beta starts at the end of the month, and access to that is "only" $75, so at this point I would just wait for that. The final game will be $50, but it doesn't have a firm date yet (though supposedly towards the end of the year).
It just depends on how much patience you have I suppose (a thing that I have little of personally).
