I'd cream myself if they ever came out with Great Star Wars Naval Battles II: The Aldaraan Asteroid Field Campaign.
But yes, that's an amazing idea.
You would think it'd be a no-brainer, but conventional wisdom points to the very niche appeal of naval warfare simulation even during its heyday and suggests that it'd never approach the popularity of something like a new TIE Fighter, much less something that'd actually get made and sold, like Jedi Something XVIII: Force Whatever: Going out for Smokes. Very sad.
Maybe some sort of promotional mobile title in the style of Fallout Shelter could get made, but again, I don't think it'd have much depth to it.
Are there any freelancer-like games that I can play now or in the near-future? I know Elite is out, have the DLC/expansions fleshed it out any? I remember seeing a couple of videos for a game called Rogue... Starfleet. Rebel System. Something like that, it seemed pretty Freelancey.
I never played Freelancer, so I guess... what kind of thing are you looking for? Expansive space, a free-form go wherever structure, something more controlled and managed?

I like space trucking and trading. The universe felt really big, I liked plotting out routes where I'd be carting luxury goods in one sector and selling them off in another sector where tools were selling for cheap.
I do wish the scale of the ships could be bigger, and that combat could have a bit more depth to it.
I don't know if you've looked much into where Elite's at right now, or what's coming up with the new Horizons content coming out over the next year, but that could be what you're after. Also while I can't remember the permutations, I believe you'd be able to get the base Elite plus Horizons for what's currently the price of Elite on its own. Not sure if you'd have to wait until after Horizons launches, though.

You can buy Horizons for the price of the base game, but it won't activate until the Horizons release, which is "holiday season". Could be this month! Could be January 1st. (it won't be this month)

The game your thinking of is Rebel Galaxy. I'm pretty excited for it, looks like it will be good fun. *Edit* Oh hey, it's coming out the 20th of Oct. Which rocks but I feel like they didn't really do much promotion or anything for it. I remember it being announced and they described the basics but that was it. Hrm. *Revenge of the Edit* Found a gameplay trailer:
Very bare bones but taking enemy ships over for your own is always satisfying.
I've also played a fair bit of Star Traders--again, fairly bare bones, lots of awkward text and unexplained mechanics, but it's a reasonably fun way to while away a bus ride.
It's more roguelike in space + trading than a space sim though.
The X3 series is, for my money, still the best space trading game. Mainly because there's a path onwards from "drive your truck here, buy some shit, drive here, sell the shit". That gets old pretty fast. In the X3 series you can eventually buy a better ship and pay someone else to trade for you, build factories etc. I love Elite, but from a trading point of view all that changes is that your ship gets bigger and less fun to fly.
I need to figure out a good set up for the Hotas X I took from my dad. Not having a computer desk makes it a little tricky. I've got Eterium, Starlight Inception and Strike Suit Zero waiting for some love.

Is Rebirth... playable now?
Sure. It's still not great or possibly even good, but it's playable. I loaded it up the other night and flew around the various systems and factories and cities and whatnot just enjoying the view, and it's still fun doing that and seeing how pretty it all is. The devs have fixed a lot of bugs and other issues, but it's not like the previous games in the X series. If that's what you were wanting then you'll still be disappointed.

Rebirth is a piece of shit.
The X3 series I would probably find hard to go back to after the immersion of Elite, but there's no denying its trading gameplay is better than anything else out there.
I was so excited for Rebirth, and so disappointed. Still, I have to say the environments are just beautiful and bustling with activity. They at least got that right. It's something I wish Elite had.

I remember looking at one of their update videos recently (where they desperately said "look! we added flight assist off mode!") and it's still the best looking space game out there right now. Star Citizen is pushing more stuff around the screen, but the sectors in Rebirth look incredible. It's a fucking dog though.
"Only in AFF can you spawn in your crew quarters, run to the bay watching the space fight out of the windows, launch a dropship, fight through the defenders to the enemy flagship, breach the hull, run and gun your way to the bridge and SHOOT THE ENEMY CAPTAIN IN THE BACK OF THE NECK. "
Not a sim, but it's SPACE!

Scott Manley does a run through Rogue System's first complete mission, just released in Update 3.
Witness how quickly a manual cold start goes once somewhat familiar with the routine. Also remember that a manual cold start will not be necessary once the the ship's AI module is implemented. At that point you'll just need to get battery power to the computer so it can boot up and bring everything else online for you if you like.
Development on the game is moving at a satisfying pace.

I tried this a long ass time ago and the space combat felt just like an unreal game, but it was fun. The problem will get getting a good player count and nut having everything go to shit.
Picked up Elite: Dangerous last week, and spent a solid six hours of my Sunday getting my controls configured and playing around with the game.
I feel like I'm missing something though. Aside from space trucking, and pirating/chasing pirates, what is there to do? I can't make heads or tails of how to find targets on kill missions, and it just feels like I'm missing a big chunk of what everyone loves about this game.

That's its dark secret. You've seen the game. The people that love it, love it for that.
The game is a huge sandbox, but a very shallow one.
There are some big furballs around at resource extraction sites and warzones, but you're not overlooking much. Hopefully the expansions will fix that someday.

Elite is a pretty big sandbox, we need more info to go on to give any specific help you need. Like if your target is say, Pirates, you can go to a Resource Extraction Site to hunt them. They will be the ones that are Wanted after you scan them, generally speaking. If you are talking about a specific named NPC then you'll have to go to the system named in the mission and hunt them down in Supercruise, interdict them and kill them. While probably dodging the local authorities.
If you want player interactions you can participate in Community Goals or join Powerplay. The Galnet News feed is a great source of info on hot spots around Human Space. There are a lot of interesting community events you can get involved with too. You can look up that sort of thing at the appropriate subreddits or the FDEV forums. People organize races, duels, PvE groups, all kinds of stuff.
My advice is to take it slow and really get to know your Sidewinder. Run some missions to get to know your area. Set basic goals to achieve like ship ugpgrades or visiting a cool star in a constellation you like. Early on I made a trip to see the Pleiades in a poorly equipped Adder and it was a really exciting, fun trip.
That zooming mechanic reminds me about a speech Will Wright gave about Spore, about how if you zoom out from something, from millimeter to AU and further, you get bursts of detail. Things look pretty bleak for a lot of the zooming, then you hit a level where you see everything from a new perspective, bleak, new, bleak, new.............I just described the cycle of creativity in game, didn't I?
A few moments before I saw that video, I pictured a space sim created in a cel shaded style, like old school rotoscope, 80's and 90's cartoon color scheme.

See, now that's helpful, thanks. And specifically this tells me that I need to go buy some Interdictor gear before going on any more kill missions.
I close my eyes and all I see is the blackness of space, and rebel scum bearing down on me, blasters screeching past my cockpit.
At one point, all the rebel ships and their fighter escort jumped in within minutes of each other.
Still screwing up even though I prune their missile launchers quickly.
edit: I hope the next great space sim like TIE fighter with its narrative missions allows the wrecks of ships to remain, because these last few missions have really been breaking the suspension of disbelief by having the entire wreck vanish.

Work on the Flying Fox support craft is progressing nicely in Rogue System. Here are some shots of the progress. The goal is to have it flyable and in the game by the next update, in about a week or so.
This is the ship that will conduct Search and Rescue missions and installation of orbital defense platforms among other missions.
Hey guys, the Kickstarter for Void Destroyer 2 is going on right now. While the first is not just a space sim and has rts elements, it's still a fucking rad game and the sequel looks to be as good if not better. Check this shit out
Doooooods! Rebel Galaxy tomorrow. I am so excited you... May actually know because we're comrades here and we've all be in this boat.

Yeah, it's damn impressive and fun, but it's more unreal 2k4 than star citizen.
Although it does underscore how tragic it was a certain unreal onslaught level was not remade.
