Go to Lorule, summon the broom, then return to Hyrule. Or so I hear. Nearest weather vane I could find for it was in the Skull Woods, and time ticks all the while.
I managed it in only 3-4 attempts, refining my route each time. It's not too bad, honestly.

I just suck at dashing. =P Seriously, I must have a tendency to be just off when I press the direction I want to go, or something. Whatever it is, I can't do it nearly as well as in LttP.
Then again, I think I got all of the "minigame" pieces on either my first or second try, back to back, over the course of maybe 30min. There's probably an unprecedented level of luck involved.

    Or that.

Beat it. Played LttP just before Christmas in anticipation of getting this, and I think I still mildly prefer that, but this is still really excellent. Second favorite 2D Zelda is my snap reaction. First Zelda since they introduced the mechanic I'm even vaguely tempted by an immediate hero mode run. Might start that tomorrow. Unsure. Died 5 times: twice on Death Mountain early in the game, when I was bad at judging jumps/dodging Sphinx fire, twice when I temporarily forgot you could merge into walls during the Skull Forest boss (without the boots, I don't think it's possible to dodge him without it?), and once on the 49th floor of the Treacherous Tower.

I'm so embarrassed that I'm stuck but I have absolutely no idea how to get to the windmill. I have run around the lake a dozen times and used the Merge skill on every wall I can.

There's a guy who provides a big ole hint on a nearby island and he makes where to go obvious if you played LttP.

Either that or ill just jump into hero mode and try to 100% everything over there. Man, now i need to replay LttP. Fantastic game.

Those the guys who slooowly open their eyes and then charge you? If so, prep a spin attack and let 'em have it when they get close. Otherwise just swing, and your arc can catch most or all of them when they're close.

They just need to be handled calmly. Tornado rod helps. Hammer helps, with good timing.

If it's not those guys, just equip your lamp and pound in their faces

Okay, so I got this game for Christmas and finished it last night. I've avoided this thread since the release because I wanted to go in fairly blind. In my opinion, this is the best top-down Zelda since ALTTP. All the other handheld Zeldas have been various shades of good, but I feel like this is no contest. ALTTP>ALBW>>The Rest. The only thing I didn't like was the Lost Woods "puzzle". That felt like it should have been an optional mini-game, or not been in the game at all.

However, as much as I loved the game, I feel like the "tackle dungeons in any order" thing didn't really improve the experience. I feel like the game was good in spite of it, rather than because of it. In other Zelda games, with levels having a certain order, the difficulty can be increased as you progress. I feel like the difficulty stays flat once you reach Lorule.

The other aspect of the any-order levels that bugged me was that I still felt like there was a right and wrong order to go in. It just so happened that my choice in level order resulted in me getting some sweet upgrades with hardly any of the game left to enjoy them. I only had one level left when I got the last piece or Ore, and I got my stamina upgrade in the very last level. It actually pissed me off a little.

I kinda thought the whole point of the new item shop and the any-order levels was to do something about the problem with items being used in one dungeon and never again, but that still happened anyways. I never really needed the Sand Rod outside of the desert temple. The Tornado Rod and Hammer were underutilized outside of the their respective levels.

So my post does seem a little negative. Overall, I thought the game was fantastic. I just found it kinda funny that the feature that I recall being the most talked about leading up to the release ended up falling flat in my eyes, but didn't really do anything to take away from how much fun I had actually playing it.

  • HounHoun Registered User regular
I can agree with most of that, Dirty, though the Tornado Rod is pretty beastly and under-appreciated, especially in Shadow Link battles and the Treacherous Tower.

I think each of the items could have stood to get more time to shine in the overworld; more hookshot gaps, more rod puzzles, etc. As it was, Fire Rod was my first upgrade and my primary weapon for most of the game, because it's so damned good. Boomerang, Bow, Hammer, and Sand Rod (off the top of my head) all got nearly zero use from me.

Due to only having only two item slots, there is also a bit of a favorite weapon thing going on too. Once you get used to using a certain weapon and like it, you tend to stick with it. Of course, the upgraded fire rod was civilization and everyone should use it, but still.

Also, I hadn't thought about it, but you're right @Dirty. The dungeons aren't any more or less difficult than the one before it because they can't know how many hearts you have. They only range in difficulty because certain enemies are harder to kill for various reasons. I think the overworld benefited the most from renting items, at least for me, because I knew I could explore to my heart's content without worrying about ending up somewhere where I'd need a new item. I waste so much time in Zelda games getting places without the proper item and then having to return to them. Annoys the shit out of me.

What rules about it? It's weak, has no projectile, and is super slow.

  • WybornWyborn GET EQUIPPED Registered User regular
The Hammer hits like a train when you initially get it, squashes enemies flat when it kills them, can be kept in the swing position until you're ready to let fly, and has a stun radius only slightly smaller than the tornado rod (when upgraded, anyway) while not having the tornado rod's delay before you can start attack

    It is super rad

It would be cool if combat difficulty scaled with your progress. Just have the number and strength of enemies based on how many levels you've cleared.

What I found especially amusing, is this game has the best method of marking your map that I've seen in a Zelda game (just drop your pin and color-code it), yet there's no reason to mark your map because you can get all the items early.

I got this for Christmas and started it last night after beating Luigi's Mansion. I can't believe how good it looks in motion, on an actual DS, rather than on Youtube or what have you. So smooth.

You guys were right about the fast pace; everything just feels really quick both in terms of gameplay and progression. I played for, I dunno, an hour and already had the first dungeon completed and I'm on my way to the second. I'm really looking forward to when the game opens up; the painting dynamic is already super enticing with regards to exploration.

I tried that. I couldn't do it fast enough to keep 'em off me long enough. I figured out that the distance the game pushes you into the room (to slam the door) is entirely too far. If I backed up to the door, fewer of them came at me at once.

Eh, I don't like that style of progression though since it means you never feel stronger. If enemies get stronger just like you, killing harder ones stays tedious. I like being a murder machine when I'm nearly finished with a game.

I'm not really sure how to fix the problem, honestly, without just making the dungeons vary in difficulty and let the user decide if they want to attempt a hard dungeon earlier just for shits and giggles.

    shadowane wrote: »

This is why, as much as I enjoyed the game, I wouldn't mind if this any-order thing was just a one-off for ALBW. I don't feel like it added to the experience that much, didn't fix any existing issues, and created some new (albeit minor) ones.

  • HounHoun Registered User regular
When was the last time a Zelda game was hard, though?

  • DirtyDirty Registered User regular
I know the series isn't known for it's difficulty, but previous games did get harder as they went on, even though they never get truly difficult. ALBW hits a difficulty plateau when you reach Lorule, and really, just keeps getting easier because you keep getting upgrades while the challenge doesn't rise to meet said upgrades.

I would like some progression in that area, and Hero Mode should be unlocked from the start.

The easy solution is to increase the damage they do based on your heart containers, but don't increase their HP. Killing them doesn't need to be tedious, but if you're not paying attention and get hit, you'll pay for it. But I guess the blue/red mail kinda fucks that up...

Also, raise your hand if you got wasted the first time you tried to kill a Lionel, only to find out their fire breath does like 7 hearts of damage.
