8-4 Play: 11/29/2013 -- "A Link Between 3D Worlds"
John and JJ are back! And talking Mario, Zelda, next-gen systems, Mario, Persona 5, microtransactions, Zelda, Resogun, Mario, and taking sides in the console wars. And stick around for a special bonus segment focus(attack)ing on the Ultra SF4 location tests in Japanese arcades.
8-4 alumni Andy Church and Brendon Pritchard come home for the holidays to tell us all about their latest MMO adventures in Final Fantasy XIV and Dragon Quest X Version 2, but not before we talk about Zelda: ALBW (again), Puzzle & Dragons Z, Bravely Default, Electronic Super Joy, Kamen Rider belt buckles, last week's Nintendo Direct, and more. Happy Holidays!

It was easier to go through Winter Steam Sales without buying anything back when GB didn't really play any PC games so those kind of indy games didn't get any play in their GOTY podcasts.

Nah, I understand where Jeff is coming from. Couch multi is great, but it's a very small fraction of my gaming time. For me, dropping money on a game that's meant for local multi only is just silly.

Yeah, it sounds like his objection is the "only" part of local-only multiplayer, which, living by myself and some distance from my other gaming friends, I agree with. He doesn't hate local multiplayer, but somewhere in all the videos and bombcasts I watched recently I believe he said that the only chance he gets to do it is Windjammers or whatever else they end up playing at the office.

Finally got through all the GOTY podcasts. Listening to them get angry over Sim City was probably the best part. So much inarticulate rage (well deserved, I might add). Plus it was probably the only thing out of all 5 podcasts that everyone agreed on.
Didn't Ashes Cricket win something? Or did they just keep using it to illustrate a truly shitty year in broken games?
I'm shocked it won because the only people to experience it were Jeff and Vinny. I'd have figured Alex to have pulled rank as the resident bad games guy

It "won" Apology of the Year when 505 Games retroactively canceled it, which doesn't require anyone to have actually played it except as background to why they had to throw out how damned sorry they were, and of course is a driving example for the Please Stop (Games That Require Post-Launch Apologies) award for obvious reasons.

I side with Jeff, those controls are bad. I understand they're in service of the story, that doesn't excuse them.
I don't think there is ANY good way to make two independent, controllable characters not wonky. That doesn't mean it's an invalid mechanic for controlling a game, it just means that scheme can never be used for twitch or precision gameplay (which Brothers doesn't really have). It also means that you better have a damn good reason for using that scheme when you're forcing the player to jump through constant mental gymnastics in order to play the game. I feel Brothers does justify its control scheme with how the characters are developed and how the story plays out. I dare say half the point in choosing the split control method was to hammer home the idea that these characters were two separate individuals, moving independently but requiring each other's help to get through their quest.
Also totally agree with the GB crew that the Brothers ending was the best moment of 2013.

Confession: I have never listened to any of the Giant Bomb GOTY podcasts, despite being subscribed to their podcasts since they began. Part of it is because I don't want to be spoiled on anything since I do not often play many games in the same year they came out.
I actually skipped the "Best Story" one, and out of the other ones, the only game I remember them spoiling was Brothers:aToTS.
Which was OK with me since I had already played it.

That's not what it sounded like to me. It seemed he objected to the re-introduction of couch co-op in games.
Reason being that he hardly uses is.
A day or two before listening to that I had talked to my sister about local multiplayer, and how she could never understand why that was a feature that was even removed in the first place.
It's one of the most important features to her household.
I miss the days of friends coming over for some co-op Ghost Recon on the xbox(1).
Sim City should have taken a page from the guys that did the new Zelda game and just built directly off of what was already there. Think of how the 3D would add new gameplay elements, but don't go nuts with it. Do not add multiplayer. The game is too complex as it is.
They really like that Brothers game. I will have to give it a spin. It seems like a good example of how to make a short, focused game. I really think there is a place for short games with good storytelling nowadays.
I didn't mean it snarkily, though! He really needs to stop being so cavalier around spikes. He constantly seems to forget you can walk through them instead of jumping over them, and then jumps onto them and dies instantly.
There was an earlier run where he started panicking about a side room full of spikes and wasting time, and then he remembered he could just walk through them collecting gold.
Seems like he's gonna stream the PS3 version out of the CAH offices when he can, which generates a different daily run than the PC version he has been using.

Yeah I think that QL sold me on a 3DSXL.
It still weirds me out to hear Ryan in GB clips now.

Does anyone know what or where I can find the chiptune they sometimes use on the Bombcast as a break track?

I love the fighting games talk in the recent ones.

I can only imagine, what with it being a reskin of another game he thought was lousy. So the game is shitty AND gross.
