They kinda left the wreck of a Jaeger behind at the end of the first movie. Obsidian Fury really looks like it was built off the design of the original Gypsy Danger

I'm kind of disappointed, I I was hoping Fathom Events would have a back to back showing for this release. Really wanted to see Pacific Rim 1 on the big screen again.
But I don't see anything on their website.
This looks bad in a way that the first one was able to avoid. I dunno why, maybe Del Toro knew who to straddle the line better.
Also I appreciate the effort to set the fights in daylight but dunno if it was worth the trade off.
It's because in the first one the Robots felt like they were ENORMOUS, because even though they achieved a degree of agility, and were clearly immensely advanced technology they still felt like they were moving slowly compared to a human of our scale. That perception of a speed differential between what you would expect for a person, and what the robot could achieve made them feel like giant robots (or like the men being restricted in old plastic suits in the classic movies). It made them feel real.
The robots in this one have human, or superhuman levels of mobility. I feel it makes them feel 'smaller' and less massive. Like normal sized things in a tiny city, instead of gigantic things in a regular city. Now, some people swear by that in their robot movies, but I LOVE that lumbering power that the old one retained.
I mean, I love that the fights are in daylight, but my favorite Robots are Imperial Titans, not say Neon Genesis Evangelion robots or whatever.
It still looks great, but the first ones felt like Military hardware. These ones don't.
Ill say im in the same boat. I like heavy weighty mechs that lumber. Walking tanks compared to a giant (mobile)suit.
But ill contend that evangelion did have some weight to their movements, or at least, they had that sense of permanence in the world, with the wrenching divots they left in their wake.
That trailer confirms I will pass on theater screening with this one. It's just not clicking with me going more anime than the first.
And preteen kid genius inventor supporting character is something that needs to stop being in all movies forever.
That trailer confirmed that I absolutely need to see it in the best cinema I can find, possibly twice

The style change for the jaegers is offset for me by the fact that it looks like the fights will actually be well-lit and not obscured by water half the time. And we might get more screentime devoted to fighting in general plus with several jaegers, instead of most of them getting dropped like chumps in about five minutes of fighting.

If the roly poly junk Jaeger isn't named Bomb I riot.

The fights in the first one generally were well lit and easy to follow. It wasn't daylight, but there wasn't a problem with cuts every three seconds and everything is in shadows. Depending on the editing choices, these fights could easily look worse no matter what the lighting is like.
Shut up, Mr. Burton! You were not brought upon this world to get it!

Based entirely on my love of PR1, I might make a (belated) Birthday event out of this. I really hope it's not a complete mess, as I'd feel kind of bad dragging like a dozen friends into this if it is.
Might have to make sure everyone has seen the trailer first, at least they'd be making an informed decision.
I mean, I'm not shitting on it outright, I'm still excited, but am wary of them managing to get lightning to strike twice. Even in the best of circumstances, being contrasted against 'one of my favourite movies ever' is a tough hill to climb, and a wide array of sequels to great movies have failed to meet up to that standard.
But yeah, day one (maybe not literally, due to scheduling we often see movies on the Sunday instead), probably good for at least 5-10 tickets, for better or worse.

I just got around to watching the newest trailer linked above, and hoo boy am I ready for this movie. Will it be as good as the first one? I have no idea, but at the very least giant robots are going to punch other giant things, and that's the important part.

I figure, best case scenario it's as good as (I daren't hope for better than) Pacific Rim 1, and worst case it's on par with a Michael Bay Transformers movie. The trailers are suggesting somewhere between the two but probably significantly closer to the former, and I'm okay with that.

We're full anime here, folks!

Meanwhile, I'm wondering if it's gone anime enough.
Not even close. Not even close.

No. Iron Man is more akin to a mobile suit. Not really super, per say. The Iron Giant is defiantly a Super Robot, though.
Hope they tone down the Power Rangi-ness though.
