Y'know, keeping in mind the first movie's body count, I'm not going to rule out the possibility that this one goes Evangelion in a way. Starts out like "Yeah this is cool kids in giant robots saving the world" and winds up at "so let's explore the realities of war and the ramifications of the fact that every single one of the lead character's friends have died gruesomely".
My favorite musical instrument is the air-raid siren.
I just got around to watching the newest trailer linked above, and hoo boy am I ready for this movie. Will it be as good as the first one? I have no idea, but at the very least giant robots are going to punch other giant things, and that's the important part.
I figure, best case scenario it's as good as (I daren't hope for better than) Pacific Rim 1, and worst case it's on par with a Michael Bay Transformers movie. The trailers are suggesting somewhere between the two but probably significantly closer to the former, and I'm okay with that.
Nah, worst case it's still light years superior to a Michael Bay Transformers movie. deKnight's pedigree can't be denied, the man directed and wrote several episodes of Daredevil, Angel, Spartacus, and Buffy - I'm going to ignore his Smallville credits.
This looks bad in a way that the first one was able to avoid. I dunno why, maybe Del Toro knew who to straddle the line better.
Also I appreciate the effort to set the fights in daylight but dunno if it was worth the trade off.
It's because in the first one the Robots felt like they were ENORMOUS, because even though they achieved a degree of agility, and were clearly immensely advanced technology they still felt like they were moving slowly compared to a human of our scale. That perception of a speed differential between what you would expect for a person, and what the robot could achieve made them feel like giant robots (or like the men being restricted in old plastic suits in the classic movies). It made them feel real.
The robots in this one have human, or superhuman levels of mobility. I feel it makes them feel 'smaller' and less massive. Like normal sized things in a tiny city, instead of gigantic things in a regular city. Now, some people swear by that in their robot movies, but I LOVE that lumbering power that the old one retained.
I mean, I love that the fights are in daylight, but my favorite Robots are Imperial Titans, not say Neon Genesis Evangelion robots or whatever.
It still looks great, but the first ones felt like Military hardware. These ones don't.
The Kaiju and the city appear to be supersized as well, further diminishing the relative impression of their size.
I will admit, I am rather less enthused, but what am I gonna do?
I assumed Stacker was a nickname.
Like, it came from some dumbass comment when he was just starting out as a jaeger pilot about stacking the kaiju corpses up until they stop coming, so the media tagged him as "Stacker" and the name stuck.
Mostly because I can't imagine any parent trying to think up names for their newborn kid and thinking that adding Stacker to the list of potentials was a good idea.

Maybe his dad had a boring, normal name like Jake and always wished he had cool name like his dad, for whom Stacker was named.
Uh... if your last name is Pentacost, you have a moral obligation to name your kid something outlandish like Stacker.
Like... Stacker Pentacost is flat-out one of the most aggressively fucking cool names in movies. I liked Pacific Rim enough to see it in theaters twice, but it absolutely doesn't give a character named Stacker Pentacost, played by Idris Elba, anywhere near enough time to shine.
If a human is named Stacker Pentacost, and is also Idris Elba, they shouldn't even need a Jaeger. He should've just leveled-up by the start of the movie, and been just uppercutting Kaiju into the sun.
I know trailer cuts can be deceptive, but the last trailer makes I look like he lives and/or works near a kaiju skeleton. Literally living in the shadow of his father's legacy. I can see it.

Admittedly I haven't had a chance to see the trailer in its entirety but what I have seen of the jaegers is kinda disappointing.
The original had such huge, lumbering, awe inspiringly absurd mechs that plainly demonstrated an immense amount of love and care from the director. Del Toro understood what his vision was for the jaegers and he's also delightfully insane and so it just felt right.
This is more "the kids'll love the big fighting robbits what with the flippty flips and the punches and so on." There just feels like a level has been removed that I think was pretty integral to Pacific Rims success. Anybody can design a kick ass robot, but how you direct and use that robot is just as important.
Reviews are rolling in on this and the consensus on the critical front is not great, but I generally gel with what Movie Bob has to say and he thought it was alright so yay. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EwXt5vu3f4g
Spoilered not for plot but just to keep the tl;dr gist of his review from tainting any opinions.
Basically, it's pretty obvious that this movie exists for the overseas audiences (read: China) that prevented the first one from being a financial flop. The plot and script side of it is shaky and the fighting is less signature del Toro "big things evoking that feeling of massiveness" and more Saturday Morning Cartoon/Agile Mecha Anime ass whoopery but basically if you're pretty ok with this being a big screen live action cartoon with giant robots kicking the shit out of things you'll probably have a good time.
And tbh that's kinda all I expected so choo choo hype train still going strong!
Good, bad, or otherwise, I'm hoping to take friends to this on Sunday.
I really hope it's just fun and badass like the original. It doesn't need to break new ground or be Shakespearian, I just want to see giant robots punching giant monsters in the face.
First they came for the Muslims, and we said NOT TODAY, MOTHERFUCKER!

Shut up, Mr. Burton! You were not brought upon this world to get it!

The biggest question is whether Boatsword will return, or be surpassed.
The quality of the fights is going to make or break this for me.
Reviewers saying that the sense of weight is missing from the jaegers is honestly the most worrying thing I’ve heard. I liked but didn’t love the first film, and the thing that most stuck with me was just how fucking heavy those things felt.

Theater near where I need to drop off my wife on Saturday is showing the movie with dbox seats so I've got a morning appointment with some giant robots and a shaky theater seat.

I'm really curious to try these. Have you used them before? This sequel seems a bit underwhelming but the experience might be worthwhile.

Nope! I've heard that they have settings so you can turn up the ridiculousness if you want so I'll probably turn that dial to 12.
Just got back from it. I really freaking liked it! (For the record I don't really care about stuff like "realistic" physics when you have robots fighting monsters.) It had anime-style paper-thin characters delivering bad dialogue earnestly, lots of variations on robots vs. monsters vs. teenage girls, really fun action sequences, cheezy one-liners... it was great!
So basically, as long as you don't take your giant robot media too seriously, I think you'll enjoy it.

How did the Jeagers in this one compare to the ones in the first? Like how they move, their weight and presence and all that.

I guess I’m going to be the odd one out and say I liked it more than the first one.

It was pretty cool to see giant robot fights in broad daylight instead of at night, on a stormy sea, or under a stormy sea.
I had fun watching it, but as I said earlier, I wasn't really there for the plot.
To be honest, I am kind of disappointed that the Gundam statue wasn't obliterated on screen.
Was it just me, or did the sound track sound a lot like Tron:Legacy?
I was half expecting Daft Punk to show up.
they had different strengths. I liked the slower heavier feal to the Jaegers in the first movie, and I think the cast of the first movie was better.
But the fights in this one were out in the open letting you see the fights better which is a definite bonus. The cast seemed to suffer from having too many characters with insufficient development time. Might just be me though.
This was gloriously dumb, but in an entertaining way. The Jaegers were a lot more agile than before but not so much that I couldn't put it down to 10 years of development. I didn't like the Kaiju design much except the final one, but eh.

It's no Cade Yeager.
I got the 3D version when I got my first HMD, and it is still the only 3D movie I own.
