Guys, guys, guys.
I just got a call from a recruiter. He works for the company that did all the shit I did at my old job before the company terminated that contract and did it all in-house. Seems like a nice setup etc. etc.
ANYWAY, it would be a contract position. For the right money, I don't mind doing contract shit.
Question to you all is this: as a contract worker, i know i am listed as self-employed and all that good nonsense. Now, how much of my money should I set aside to pay towards taxes and all that shit? I know you don't have that taken out up-front as a contractor and have to pay it all at year's end or every quarter or whatever.
Does anyone have experience in this?
The offer is like 78k a year, which is almost 30k more than i'm making right now 8->
I just want to have a ballpark for how much i'll actually have after taxes and that shit

With 1 hour prep time ain't no one getting powerpoint.
The best they're getting out of me is a hastily formatted Word document cobbled together out of the dozen or so proposals and pitches I sent out to various people last week.
I actually really enjoy writing nicely-formatted documents. It is somehow soothing to see my chaotic thoughts organized under headings. I sometimes think that production was my true calling.

I'm doing the same thing and I think I'm setting aside something like 10-15%
I am just guessing as I have no idea
I told the guy I am interested, and am waiting to hear back.
I am so nervous, you guys. My heart is racing. This may be the key to my wife being able to stay home like we've been wanting, and more money!
15% is low. You've got Social and Medicare which is just 15% and then you have Federal, which is going to scale based on income but is 12 to 28%. Plus any state taxes.
Don't forget you also have to file estimated taxes every quarter.

"Okay, we have ~300 new accounts, one per store of a popular equipment supply company, how long do you think it would take the account manager to enter them all into the system?"
"At least 70 hours"
"Accurately?"
"Make that forever."
"This thing will do it in under 5 minutes, with the exact data they provided us on their stores. And we'll be able to updating vendor pricing properly. And item data. And vendor data. And create export solutions to send reportin-"
"Okay Dan, we'll get it."

It'll still be more than I'm making, but I don't know if it's enough at that point to make up for the lack of security from switching FT->Contract.

After this weeks hellish pace, i decided to take today off work and come up to my girlfriends place. Only to witness her getting hit on by a coworker, a married one no less. And this is the 2nd time this has happened. She claims its him and she tries to avoid this guy, but... 2nd time.
I know this isnt really work related but I really needed a day off from office related nonsense and i discovered its everywhere.

Right, and presumably you'll need to pay for health insurance yourself?
From what he was saying, they would cover insurance for me, but i would have to buy insurance for the rest of the family. Which I know is ass-expensive.
Once I dig more into it, it seems that it is not the super life-changing opportunity I thought it was.
"Hey Hacksaw, you want to work a hotel gig next week? It's AV stuff, lots of hours, probably lots of overtime. And overtime is especially handy right now since Steam just started their Summer Sale."
At the app goLive yesterday in some spare me and one of the application support guys (application support and development is in a different building from datacenter support and the helpdesk, so we don't mingle much) and we were talking about the QR code stuff and he mentioned that he'd been at a convention that did a QR code scavenger hunt. I was like, "Oh that sounds cool. What convention was that?"
"It's called the Penny Arcade Expo."
"Oh really...?"

so not only did we get a pinball game at work today, but we spent all morning playing minecraft
I get paid for this shit, people

This is how I feel about my current job position. I've been working at a medical dispensary for a while now and my average day usually involves working with friends I grew up with since middle school, talking to and hanging out with a generally awesome patient base, and occasionally doing some work. I really appreciate the laid back environment, especially coming from retail.
Today I showed a bunch of summer students some robots and watch them get really interested.
A few weeks back I showed the robots to a bunch of 2nd and 3rd graders got to watch them get super excited.
In a few weeks I get to show the robots to more summer students, this group will get to drive the robots and I know I'll watch them go nuts.
I like my job, but sometimes I really love my job.

Relatively mundane issue. Their high speed internet went out, causing other issues. Took all day to resolve because we had to wait for AT&T to send someone to replace the DSL modem.
Also we came in early, so we left early, so I was about 2 hours ahead of the bullshit traffic that clogs up the 2-lane portion of the highway. So, double bonus!
Looking forward to this job. For now anyway.
The whole reason we were hired on is because they're transitioning to a new version of their back-office software in the stores. So when that goes live, it's gonna suuuuuck. But for now, it's all gravy.

So not only did we get a pinbball table and play minecraft all morning, but after we finished doing real actual work tonight we ended the week by getting drunk and playing pinball, street fighter 2 on the snes and ping pong. Basically at the same time. Passing the controller to whoever was closest when it was your turn for pinball, then running to relieve the next guy at the ping pong table when he was up. Also played a bunch of Tokyo Jungle, LAN Doom and Tennnes.

Oh, and I got two tickets to see Danzig like three days before PAX.
I get my desk back when I go back home from the west coast. Life is good. I'm also being trusted with interviewing and case studies for potential hires.
We're closing our store in three weeks!
Hopefully the deal we've got going goes through as these guys will teach us everything I feel like school should have, but better late than never! Just need to figure out the pay since the whole reason we're shutting down the store is that I am up to my eye balls in debt (Not really) and need to start paying that shit off.
My uniform is all black, and I live with 5 dogs. Everyday my boss asks me if I have any cats, knowing I have dogs.
It started with me saying, No, I have dogs." Now I just walk away ashamed that my lint roller could only do so much.

That is a lot of things.
Boss approved the fancy new integration software.
All it took was going
